(记事本) and a hole for a pencil.
I"m looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I am recommending to my mother. Over
forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later, the current paper and
pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can"t be the same pencil? The pad is more modern, but the
wooden stand is definitely the original one.
"I"m just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these year." I say to
her, walking bank into the living-room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. "You still use a pencil. Can"t you
afford a pen?"
My mother replies a little sharply. "It works perfectly well. I"ve always kept the stand in the kitchen. I never
knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in these days."
Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a wooden spoon in one hand, the
pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My mother smiles and says, "One day I was cooking and
watching baby Pauline, and I had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the children must have
taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all down on the back. It turned out to be a real
breakthrough for solving the mathematical problem I was working on."
This story-which happened before I was born-reminds me how extraordinary my mother was, and is, as a
gifted mathematician. I feel embarrassed that I complain about not having enough child-free time to work. Later,
when my mother is in the bathroom, I go into her kitchen and turn over the breadboards. Sure enough, on the
back of the smallest one, are some penciled marks I recognize as mathematics. Those symbols have traveled
unaffected through fifty years, rooted in the soil of a cheap wooden breadboard, invisible (看不到的) exhibits
at every meal.
B. To list her everyday tasks.
C. To note down maths problems.
D. To write down a flash of inspiration.
B. It needs to be replaced by a better one.
C. It brings her back to her lonely childhood.
D. It should be passed on to the next generation.
B. giving her mother a lot of trouble
C. not making good use of time as her mother did
D. not making any breakthrough in her field
B. The family members like traveling.
C. The author had little time to play when young.
D. The marks on the breadboard have disappeared.
B. keen on her research
C. fond of collecting old things
D. careless about her appearance

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently. My father realised it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I"m so glad I did. On the road to the harbour we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbour itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on board, we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the distance. On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn"t believe it-there aren"t any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive. The little baby whale-actually as big as our boat-was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools (漩涡) and waves. "She"s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side," my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat in a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe-and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight from the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance. In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Behind our house is the start of a fascinating trail (小径). This trail is one of the old roads that wind through untold miles of forest. My 1 , Beans, and I walk the trail frequently.
