that there"s a big difference between "being a writer" and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of
wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. "You"ve got to want to write," I say to them, "not
want to be a writer."
The truth is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by good luck
there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded (报答). When I left a 20-year job in the U. S.
Coast Guard to become a writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room
in a New York apartment building. It didn"t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately
bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn"t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a
story that hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn"t
going to be one of those people who die wondering "what if". I would keep putting my dream to the test-even
though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and anyone with a
dream must learn to live there.

and money! Best of all, it is free!
It"s "no".
What do you ask? We"ll say it again:"No".
Sweet and simple "no".
Say "no" at your office and see how quickly that pile of work on your desk disappears.
"Saying "no" to others means you are saying "yes" to yourself," said Leslie Charles, a professional speaker
from East Lansing, Michigan.
"Time is precious. People are spending money buying time. And yet we are willing to give up our time
because we can"t say "no"."
Susie Watson, a famous writer, said people who always say "yes" need to say "no" without guilt (内疚)
or fear of punishment. "I would rather have someone give me a loving "no" than an obligated (强制的) "yes","
she said.
Susie Watson says she feels "no" obligation to give an explanation when she says "no" either socially or
professionally. Does she feel guilty about it? "Not at all," said Watson, who is director of advertising and public
relations at Timex Corp in Middlebury, Connecticut. "Most people are afraid of saying "no"… My advice is to
say "yes" only if you don"t mean "no"."
Watson said "no" is the most effective weapon against wasting time. "Every year there are more demands
on your time… Other people are happy to use up your time," Watson said. Time saving appears to be "no"s"
greatest friend.
"No" can be your new friend, a powerful tool to take back your life. "No" may even take you further in
the business world than"yes".
"No" is power and strength. "No" now seems completely correct."Saying "no" isn"t easy. But finally it"s
greatly liberating," Charles said. But, he added, a "no" project needs to be worked on every day because it is
hard to change long-term habit.
But, he also warns:"Don"t go to extremes. Don"t find yourself saying "no" to everything. In return you
should learn to hear "no"."
B. you needn"t care about other"s feeling if you are happy
C. you are selfish and treat others rudely
D. you can deal with your business as you have planned
B. polite way
C. proud way
D. guilty way
A. enjoys a wonderful life

For many years, I stuck to the idea that my suffering was because of my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it. Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is to believe that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished (珍爱). We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there. But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally realize its promise of everlasting happiness, self-worth, and of course, love. It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards are different with culture. In Samoa, a woman is not considered attractive unless she weights more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it"s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us work hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.

Is there anything more important than health? I don"t think so. "Health is the greatest wealth (财富)," wise people say. You can"t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill. If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is follow his advice. Speaking about doctor"s advice, I can"t help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule:"Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is." The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn"t smoke more than one cigarette a day. A month later the gentleman came into the doctor"s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man. "But you know, doctor," he said, "it"s not easy to begin smoking at my age."
