weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.
Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything.
Perhaps our worst mistake is to believe that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished
(珍爱). We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very
hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be
different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally realize its promise of everlasting
happiness, self-worth, and of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty
standards are different with culture. In Samoa, a woman is not considered attractive unless she weights
more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it"s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather
than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us work hard to change our body, but in vain.
We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves.
When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.
B. culture difference
C. body size
D. different beauty standards
B. all the problems
C. the whole world
D. the total truth
B. The author succeeded in losing weight.
C. The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents
D. The author is a Samoan.
B. Beauty: standard varies with culture
C. Change your attitude rather than your shape
D. It will be different next time

wise people say. You can"t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill. If you have a headache,
toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high
temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to
the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your
temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After
that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor"s advice, I can"t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness,
memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was
no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He
also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other
words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule:"Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is."
The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn"t smoke more than one cigarette a
day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor"s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the
doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.

several years ago and developed a friendship that began with small talk about their pets. This quickly turned
to afternoon get-together, where kids, dogs and grown-ups formed firm friendships.
Now the pair and their pets meet several times a week on the grass near Sandringham College, a place
for a huge network of dog owners who have formed all kinds of friendships and a good old-fashioned sense
of community. Dogs, it seem, are good for social life.
The combination (结合) of excited kids and dogs could be a recipe (处方) for disaster and Miller says it
is surprisingly harmonious (和谐的). "There are some other people who don"t have kids but have started to
meet us quite regularly," she says. "the other day, there were seven dogs, five adults and six children all
walking around the park together."
Friendships formed through pets seem to cross cultural and age barriers (阻碍) and often include helping
when someone is sick or needs help to care for a bet. A woman says she"s answered several SOS calls from
elderly people who have become ill suddenly and need a help. "The friendships are such that you see these
people every day and you get to know them and they trust you with their pets and know they can call you at
the last minute," she says.
One dog owner says that, even as a child, she noticed how dogs could act as conversational ice-breakers
for adults. Like people, dogs are also social creatures. "Dogs need to meet others," she says, "they are pack
animals."

friendships don"t last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend
the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest;
be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell
the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven"t been honest, you may lose your friend"s
trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch
money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable
to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with each other. Something may go wrong at
school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving
the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend"s
place so that you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to
keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
B. some people receive friendship but don"t give friendship back

article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something
I"m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account ).
I love how singer Judy Garland put it, "Always be a first-class version of yourself,
instead of a second-class version of somebody else."
Then there"s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and
with your boss? If you"ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and
notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can"t do wrong and feel right. This story
by Jeff is a good example of that:
In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn"t do well.
I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped
them pass. I"d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.
At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn"t thinking about
how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn"t do that anymore, because
I wasn"t really helping them. They weren"t learning anything, and it would only get harder
down the road. Cheating certainly wasn"t helping me.
It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating
on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of
honesty is a deposit into your PBA and will build strength.
B. Don"t copy others or you can"t be the first class.
C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.
D. Don"t learn from others unless they"re excellent.
B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.
C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.
D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.
B. it"s difficult to be honest when others are not
C. one should be honest when making a deposit
D. honesty in one"s actions can help him in the future
