say.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 126 million Americans who
don"t smoke are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, vehicles, workplaces, and public places.
This exposure causes thousands of lung cancer and heart disease deaths among nonsmokers every year,
according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.
"Making the leap from the effects of secondhand smoke on humans to their effects on pets isn"t a big
one," says veterinarian (兽医专家) Carolynn MacAllister of Oklahoma State University.
"There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat
secondhand smoke poses to pets," MacAllister said. "Secondhand smoke has been associated with oral
cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancer in dogs,as well as lung cancer in birds. "
Studies have also shown that dogs living in a smoking household are susceptible to cancers of the
nose and sinus area, particularly if they are a long-nosed breed, because their noses have a greater surface
area that is exposed to carcinogens and a greater area for them to accumulate. Dogs affected with nasal
cancer normally don"t survive for more than one year.
"Short and medium-nosed dogs are more susceptible to lung cancer, because their shorter nasal
passage aren"t as effective at accumulating the inhaled secondhand smoke carcinogens," MacAllister
said. "This results in more carcinogens (致癌物质) reaching the lungs. "
Birds are also at risk for lung cancer,as well as pneumonia, because their respiratory systems are
hypersensitive to any type of air pollutant.
To help prevent animals from being adversely affected by smoking, pet owners who smoke should
have a designated smoking area that is separated from the home or stop smoking altogether,MacAllister
said.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will
almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course.
However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we
need.We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way
possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home
in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now
makes up a third of a typical household"s waste in the UK.In many supermarkets
nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,
is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off
greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process
itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is
a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they
need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging
customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate
packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality.
This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which
often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realise just how much
unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture,
but we have a mountain to climb.

energy. It works your muscles and makes your heart work hard so as to send blood to your
muscles. So,exercise makes your heart and muscles strong.Exercise also makes you feel
refreshed. If you exercise a couple of times a week, you will stay happy and healthy.
Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US,
many people don"t have enough exercise because it is hard for them.People have to work
from dawn till dusk,so they don"t have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings
sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. They cannot get much exercise sitting at desk
passively.
Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, the majority
of people cannot do this.It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but
to drive to work.In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is unfavourable
in two ways.First, these people don"t have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in
their cars for two to four hours each day.Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours
and calls for too much attention. It makes a person worn out. So,when these people arrive home
at night, they don"t have the desire to take exercise after work.
Today, many people in the West are overweight, which causes health problems for them.
Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many
people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don"t
see a difference right away, they will lose heart and stop exercising.
only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is
today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he
is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively
a short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the
modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20%
of the brain"s capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more
and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger
ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow
larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they
become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man"s
eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are
likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because
they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time
because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely
to be bald.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look
at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot
in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and motions similar to our own.
B. Future man will look quite different from us
C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes
D. Man"s organs" functions will change
B. Man"s hair is getting thinner and thinner.
C. Man"s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.
D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.
B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
C. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
D. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time
B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn"t have to make use of them.
D. He thinks and feels in a different way.
B. body organs will become poorer if they are not used often
C. human beings hope for a change in the future life
D. future life is always predictable
don"t eat it? If you have to make a decision of this type, most people (especially very busy
people) will choose to skip breakfast.
However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast ( the meal which "break"
you "fast" ) to be the most important t meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say,
we will have the energy and nutrients (营养) we need to begin our working day with vigor(活力)
and stay hopeful with good honor. However, many people skip breakfast or substitute a cup
of coffee for a well balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of breakfast?
One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants
included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. The results showed that if a
person eats an adequate breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently and more productively
than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially
true if a person"s work involves mental(脑力的) activities. The study showed that if school-children
eat fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able
to concentrate (集中)on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast is inadequate.
The study also showed that contrary to what people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not
lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much
for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you want to lose weight,
skipping breakfast will not help you. You will likely lose more weight if you decrease your other
meals.
