举一反三
Your body, which has close relations with the food you eat, is the most important thing you own, so
it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment (营养).The old saying "An apple a day keeps the
doctor away"is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and vegetables because they
contain vitamin C. Many people take extra vitamins in pill form, believing that these will make them
healthy.
But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The body
doesn"t need or use extra vitamins, so why waste money on them?
In the modern western world, many people are too busy to bother about eating properly. They throw
anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illnesses caused or made worse
by bad eating habits is frightening,

problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man"s release of completely new and often
artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural
substance , such as oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and
use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the
environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste
products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new
and complex goods are produce there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for
example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see
pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of
industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in
connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more
on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually
becoming worn out as it is being used in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizer cannot
restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could
be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the
home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or
four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles
or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste
of resources, in term of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by
persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away
much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to
solve by cutting out unnecessary buying ,excess consumption and careless disposal of the
products we use in our daily lives.
B. exposed
C. disapproved of
D. collected
B. the harder pollution can be prevented
C. the more pollution there will be
D. the more easily pollution can be controlled

C. Individuals know how to get rid of the habit of littering everywhere.
D. We can"t stop buying unnecessary things.
B. making anti-pollution advertisements
C. cutting down the use of oil and other oil products
D. reducing unnecessary buying, over-consumption and careless disposal of wastes
surroundings, many Australians are turning caring for the environment into a way of life.
Julie Astonis, an Australian housewife in Brisbane is one such example. Even though autumn is
approaching Australia"s Brisbane in April, one can still watch colorful blooming (盛开的) flowers in
Julie"s little garden, as she tells that in her community, "Each of us has a beautiful yard. The whole
community, from children to elderly people, takes care of the environment as if they are taking care of their own garden."
"Gardening is the most popular club in our community," she says. "A lot of retired people don"t just
regularly organize gardening lectures, but also personally visit families in the community to provide
gardening training. So you can see that flowers continue to blossom in our gardens throughout the year."
Talking about her people"s sense of caring for the environment, Julie says when people in the
community take along their dog, they always carry a garbage bag to deal with the dog"s waste. "In our
community, you will never experience the embarrassment of stepping on the dirty waste while you are
walking on the grass," says Julie with a smile."Taking care of the the dog"s waste can also help to develop
children"s sense of responsibility!"
As to protecting water resources, the Australian goverment has made strict rules for families. Julie says, "We certainly would not use tap water to water the flowers!"She says almost every family in her
community has a huge tank used to store rainwater, which is later used as the resource of all outdoor water use, including car washing and watering the garden. This year, they also asked people to connect the water tank with their toilets.
B. April is a great time for people to enjoy flowers
C. it"s not easy to keep a garden without proper training

First prepare the following items:
●2 glass containers(容器) that need to be the same size and shape
●1 gallon plastic bag
●4 cups of very cold water
●Ice cubes
Fill each container with two cups of cold water. Add the same amount of ice cubes to each container. Then put one of the containers in the plastic bag and close it tight. Put both containers in the sun together and keep them there for at least an hour.
At the end of one hour remove the container from the plastic bag and immediately check the temperature of the water. After you record this, find out the temperature of the water that is not covered.
When you place the containers in direct sunlight, the air inside the bag becomes very warm. The heat filters (渗入) in but cannot escape so it stays in the closed plastic bag and increases the temperature. What if you leave that for two, three or four hours?
Think about what is happening to the Earth. There are chemicals that are creating a type of plastic bag around the Earth. It causes our air to get warmer because of the heat from the sun being kept in this closed area.
Think about your car in the hot summer. This is what happens when you leave your car outside all day. This greenhouse effect has caused your car to be so hot that you sometimes cannot even touch the steering wheel.
This science project goes to show what affects our planet.
1. According to the text, the greenhouse effect appears mainly because of ________.

the risk of dehydration (脱水) . But athletes now know they can also get into trouble by drinking to much .
To much water intake can lower levels of sodium (钠) in the blood . The death of a 28-year-old woman
following the Boston Marathon caught the attention of many runners and led to new research .
Experts advise long distance runners to replace the liquids they sweat out . Their goal is to try to keep
someone from not getting dehydrated by more than 2 percent of their body weight .
One technique for deciding how much water you need is to get the exact numbers . Runners have to
weight themselves before and after a run to determine how much water they"ve lost . If their weight drops
by more than 2 percent , they have not drunk enough water.
Hyponatremia occurs when runners drink so much water that blood salt levels drop off . A study
published last year tested 488 runners who completed the Boston Marathon and found 13 percent of them
had dangerously low blood salt levels . The first sign that runners may notice is slightly swelling in the
hands . They can"t get their rings off , and then they might feel sick . They may not remember where they
are . In fact , most runners get enough salt to get back to normal levels by eating just one meal after a run .
Contrary to the old advice that runners should drink as much as they can to prevent dehydration , the new
research has shown that the body is a remarkable machine that actually tells you via thirst when you need
water .
B.the long distance runners who need help
C.how to manage water intake during a marathon
D.a 28-year-old woman who died after a Boston Marathon
B.They can learn how much salt there is in the blood .
C.They ca know the quantity of water they"ve lost during a run .
D.They can decide what kind of water they should take during a run .
B.Either too much or to little of water intake is harmful .
C.A rich meal is helpful to our performance in a run .
D.We should take enough salt during a run .
B.Too much water intake→blood salt levels ?→hyponatremia .
C.No water intake→blood sodium levels↑→hyponatremia .
D.No water intake →blood salt levels ?→hyponatrenmia .
