How Much to Tip You"re out to dinner. The food is delicious and the service is fine. You decide to leave a big fat tip. Why? The answer may not be as simple as you think. Tipping, psychologists have found,is not just about service. Instead, studies have shown that tipping can be affected by psychological reactions to a series of different factors from the waiter"s choice of words, to how they carry themselves while taking orders, to the bill"s total. Even how much waiters remind customers of themselves can determine how much change they pocket by the end of the night. "Studies before have shown that mimicry (模仿) brings into positive feelings for the mimicker," wrote Rick van Baaren, a social psychology professor. "These studies show that people who are being mimicked become more generous toward the person who mimicks them." So Rick van Baaren divided 59 waiters into two groups. He requested that half serve with a phrase such as, "Coming up!" Those in the other half were instructed to repeat the orders and preferences back to the customers. Rick van Baaren then compared their take-home pay. The results were clear-it pays to mimic your customer. The copycat (模仿者) waiters earned almost double the amount of tips to the other group. Leonard Green and Joel Myerson, psychologists at Washington University in St. Louis, found the generosity of a tipper may be limited by his bill. After research on the 1,000 tips left for waiters, cabdrivers, hair stylists, they found tip percentages in these three areas dropped as customers" bills went up. In fact, tip percentages appear to plateau (稳定期) when bills topped $100 and a bill for $200 made the worker gain no bigger percentage tip than a bill for $100. "That"s also a point of tipping," Green says. "You have to give a little extra to the cabdriver for being there to pick you up and something to the waiter for being there to serve you. If they weren"t there, you"d never get any service. So part of the idea of a tip is for just being there."

Dear God, Now that I am no longer young, I have friends whose mothers have passed away. I have heard these sons and daughters say they never fully appreciated their mothers until it was too late to tell them. I am blessed with the dear mother who is still alive. I appreciate her more each day. My mother does not change, but I do. As I grow older and wiser, I realize what an extraordinary person she is. How sad that I am unable to speak these words in her presence, but they flow easily from my pen. How does a daughter begin to thank her mother for life itself? For the love, patience and just plain hard work that go into raising a child? For running after a toddler, for understanding a moody teenager, for tolerating a college student who knows everything? For waiting for the day when a daughter realizes how wise her mother really is? How does a grown woman thank a mother for continuing to be a mother? For being ready with advice (when asked) or remaining silent when it is most appreciated? For not saying:"I told you so", when she could have said these words dozens of times? For being essentially herself-loving, thoughtful, patient, and forgiving? I don"t know how, dear God, except to bless her as richly as she deserves and to help me live up to the example she has set. I pray that I will look as good in the eyes of my children as my mother looks in mine. A daughter

I consider myself something of an expert on apologies. A quick temper has 1 me with plenty of opportunities to make them. In one of my earliest 2 , my mother is telling me, "Don"t watch the 3 when you say "I"m sorry". Hold your head up and look the person in the 4 , so he"ll know you 5 it." My mother thus made the key point of a(n) 6 apology: it must be direct. You must never 7 to be doing something else. You do not 8 a pile of letters while apologizing to a person 9 in position after blaming him or her for a mistake that turned out to be your 10 . You do not apologize to a hostess, whose guest of honor you treat 11 , by sending flowers the next day without mentioning your bad 12 . One of the important things you should do for an 13 apology is readiness to 14 the responsibility for our careless mistakes. We are used to making excuses, which leaves no 15 for the other person to 16 us. Since most people are open-hearted, the no-excuse apology leaves both parties feeling 17 about themselves. That, after all, is the 18 of every apology. It 19 little whether the apologizer is wholly or only partly at fault: answering for one"s 20 encourages others to take their share of the blame.
