I was reading these intriguing stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is
my favorite one-it"s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald"s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my very
favorites.
Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This
logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike"s logo was designed by
Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
McDonald"s
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the archshaped signs on the side
of the company"s then walkup hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined
together to form the M. The McDonald"s name was added to the logo in 1968.
Apple
There are different stories behind Apple"s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story
of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the
second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton
sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn"t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately
by graphic designer Rob Janoff"s "rainbow apple", a rainbowcolored silhouette(轮廓)of an apple with a
bite taken out of it. And then the rainbowcolored apple was replaced by the onecolored logo in 1998. It
has not been changed so far.
Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a
simple description of a threepointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The
company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Marcedes is the name of Maybach"s
elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie. and DMG in 1926.
Adidas
The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents
mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo
was used for the first time in 1967.

My newlywedded wife and I are deeply in love. There is, however, one issue that threatens the
happiness of our marriage. I absolutely insist on shopping at Walmart. My wife, meanwhile, would
rather avoid Walmart at all costs. I have recently tried to convince her that not only does Walmart offer
the lowest prices known to man, but that the chain is also a force for good-lower prices mean better
standards of living for all consumers, increased global trade means a tighterknit (紧密团结的)
international community, and efficient operations translate into higher productivity growth for the
economy. My wife complains about poor labour policies, the fact that Walmart squeezes suppliers, and
that it puts local shops out of business.
Who is right? Will our marriage survive?
Brian Gee
Dear Brian,
I have to agree with you about Walmart. Jason Furman, then an economist at New York University,
now an adviser to President Obama, famously argued in 2005 that Walmart was unwittingly (不知不
觉地) a progressive success story. The chain"s prices don"t much affect me(I prefer Whole Foods)but
Furman estimated that they benefited lowandmiddleincome Americans to the sum of around $250
billion a year.
Walmart does not pay much, so it may depress wages. Then again, it may increase wages by offering
jobs to the otherwise-unemployed. Either way, the benefits of low prices to Walmart shoppers far
outweigh any seemingly reasonable costs to Walmart employees. And while it is true that Walmart
employees tend to be poor, the same is true of Walmart shoppers.
Armed with this information you can face your wife with confidence. You are sure to win the
conversation. The divorce is likely to be more argued.

As a teen, you"re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding.
1
Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them
from the dangers in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses.
Sometimes conflicts can"t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful
relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry.
A good time to talk is when you"re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into
an argument, you"d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation-for now. 2 Listen to
what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you"re listening. 3
Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about
each others" feelings can disagree without things getting ugly.
4 How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you"re going to do. Some
teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget
that parents are more than rulemakers-they"re interesting people who like to watch movies and go
shopping-just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be
rocky? 5 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.
Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change
theirs.
A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you"re not on the same page. B. You can pick it up again when everyone"s more relaxed. C. And then you"ll be able to accept what your parents say. D. Faced with the challenge, children don"t know what to do. E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you. F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing. G. You may consider seeking outside help
Columbus College,241 Queen Elizabeth Drive, Kowloon City Memo To: All Staff From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee Date: May 20, A week ago, "Sports for Life " programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones. Sports 1:Basketball We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game. Sports 2:Gym We will be using St. Peter"s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动),all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities. Sports 3:Hiking Hiking (远足) will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Sports 4:Swimming The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goingson from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e.2:45 pm to 3:45 pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshoppingwatching TV and buying things by phone. 1 In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes ,jewelry, food, toys, and many other things. 2 For example, the biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two teleshopping channels, and the French spend about $ 20 million a year to buy things through those channels. In Germany, until last year teleshopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed more teleshopping. Other channels can open for telebusiness, including the largest American teleshopping company and a 24hour teleshopping company. 3 Some people like teleshopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason, but at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. 4 Many Europeans usually worry about the quality of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them ,and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV. 5 They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.
