I fell in love with Yosemite National Park the first time I saw it, when I was 13 . My parents took us there for camping. On the way out, I asked them to wait while I ran up to EL Capitan, a 36 rock of 3,300 feet straight up. I touched that giant rock and knew 37 I wanted to climb it. That has been my life’s passion ever since— 38 the rocks and mountains of Yosemite. I’ve long made Yosemite my 39 . About 15 years ago I started seeing a lot of 40 , like toilet paper, beer cans, and empty boxes, around the area. It’s 41 me why visitors started respecting the place 42 and treated such a beautiful home-like place this way. I tried 43 trash myself, but the job was too big. I would 44 an hour or two on the job, only to find the area trashed all over again weeks later. Finally, I got so 45 it that I decided something had to change. As a rock-climbing guide, I knew 46 about organizing any big event. But in 2004, together with some climbers, I set a date for a 47 . On that day, more than 300 people 48 . Over three days we collected about 6,000 pounds of trash. It was amazing how much we were able to 49 . I couldn’t believe the 50 we made —the park looked clean! Each year volunteers come for the cleanup from everywhere. In 2007 alone, 2,945 people picked up 42,330 pounds of trash and 51 132 miles of roadway. I often hear people 52 about their surroundings. If you are one of them, I would say the only way to change things is by 53 rather than complaining. We need to teach by 54 . You can’t blame others 55 you start with yourself.

举一反三
Monday: Here I am, in the middle of nowhere. This camping trip idea is not getting off to a very good start. It’s raining and the tent leaks. The hiking seemed to take forever, and I still can’t understand how it could all have been up hill! How did I ever let my brother talk me into this? When we get home—if we ever get home—he’s going to have to do something great to get back on my good side. Maybe he should sponsor a shopping spree(狂购)at the mall! Tuesday: Things are looking up. The sun came out today, so we were able to leave the tents and dry out. We’re camped at the edge of a small lake that I couldn’t see before because of the rain and fog. The mountains are all around us, and the forest is absolutely beautiful. We spent most of the day dragging out everything out of our backpacks or tents and putting it where the sun could dry it out. Later in the afternoon we tried to catch the fish for dinner, but the fish were smarter than we were. At night we built a fire and sang songs happily. Wednesday: We hiked to the far side of the lake and climbed to the top of a small peak. From there we could see how high the other mountains were and how far the forest spread around us. On the way up we passed through a snowfield! Thursday: I caught my first fish! We followed the stream that fed the lake. After about two miles, we came to a section that Carol said looked “fishy”. She had a pack rod(竿), which can be carried in a backpack. I asked to cast it, and I caught a fish on my first try. Carol caught a few more. But they were just too pretty to eat for lunch so we put them back in the stream. Friday: I can’t believe we are going home already. It will be nice to get a hot shower, sleep in a real bed, and eat junk food, but the trip has been wonderful. We’re already talking about another camping adventure next year where we canoe down a river. It’s hard to believe, but I think this city girl has a little country blood in her veins. 小题1:The writer went on this camping trip because________.A.she enjoyed camping | B.she wanted to go fishing | C.she was influenced by her brother | D.she was tired of staying at home | 小题2:The whole morning of Tuesday, the writer ________.A.hiked along the lake | B.dried out her belongings | C.climbed the mountain | D.caught the fish for dinner | 小题3:It can be inferred that Carol had a pack rod with her because ________. A.she could not afford to buy a regular fishing pole | B.she needed it to get their main source of food | C.she thought the writer of the journal might need it | D.she expected to go fishing while they were hiking | 小题4:It is likely that the writer will ________. A.go on another camping trip | B.invite Carol to go fishing together | C.make her brother buy her something | D.convince her brother to go camping |

Life affects friendships. As we grow, marry, fight in wars, move across the country or change jobs, old friendships fall away and new ones form. As long as we live, the things around us change, and as long as things change, friendships are affected. When we were children we had best friends. No matter what happened we were still friends. We live our lives, however, and do what life calls for us to do, and as we get older, memories fade, faces blur, and even friends" names from childhood are forgotten. Do you have a question about friendship? Do you wonder what to do with a friend who is no longer friendly? Perhaps you will see that you can"t control others. If someone wants to be your friend, it is their choice. All you can do is treat them well and do the best for them when you are with them. Then you wish them well when they leave. You can talk to old timers and they will tell you that life is full of incredible joy and incredible sorrow, and that what bothers you today will one day becomes a memory and the sting(痛苦) will be gone. Seniors might tell you that you will learn more as you get older. They will tell you that friendships come and friendships go. Sometimes when they go it will hurt, but you will be okay with it. It"s the way life works, after all. 小题1:What can we learn about friendship, according to the text?A.Friendship can not be easily affected by one"s family. | B.Friends are always around us and will never go away. | C.Friends in childhood are the best no matter what happens. | D.Friends in childhood are sometimes forgotten by us. | 小题2:What should we do with friends who are no longer friendly according to the text?A.Do our best to control them and make them listen to us. | B.Forget them and make new friends who have a lot in common with us. | C.Find the reason why our friendship has changed. | D.Care about them and do the best for them when we are together. | 小题3:The text mainly tell us _________.A.how to face the changes in friendship | B.how to deal with unfriendly people | C.that childhood friendship is valuable | D.how to share happiness with friends |

Before you make friends, you have to decide who you want to be your friends. Most people like to have friends who like to do the same kinds of things they do. The quickest way to make a friend is to smile. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk to. It may not be easy at first to smile, but remember most people will stay away from a scared or angry looking face. One easy way to start a conversation with someone is to say something nice about him. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person? Ask your new friends questions about themselves. Who’s their favorite singer, where do they live, what do they do after school are all good questions to start a conversation. Make sure you have something to add to the conversation, too. When someone asks you a question, do have an answer for them. There is nothing that will stop a conversation quicker than a shrugfor an answer. Kids who show an interest in other kids and who are kind and friendly make good friends. Remember, everyone wants to be around people who like to do similar things and people who are nice to them. 小题1:This passage gives us some advice on_______.A.how to make friends | B.what kind of person you can make friends with | C.how to start a conversation | D.the importance of smile | 小题2:Most people like to make friends with those________.A.who are sad every day | B.who share the same interest | C.who are fond of talking | D.who say bad things to them | 小题3:According to the third paragraph, most people enjoy talking to one_______.A.who is always smiling | B.who seems to be friendly | C.who praises them | D.who points out their shortcomings |

Surfing: It’s Not Just for Boys Anymore If you asked high school girls to name their favorite sports, most would probably say basketball or volleyball. I happen to be one of the few girls who would 36 : surfing. But isn’t that a boy thing? Some people 37 . Most certainly not. I started surfing about five years ago and fell in love with the sport on the 38 first day. Riding that first 39 was the best feeling I had ever experienced. When I try to 40 surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my 41 , there’s nothing like it. It involves body, 42 , and soul. There’s sand between my toes and cool, salt water all 43 us. The feeling I get when I’m surfing across that 44 , becoming one with the 45 , is like I’m weightless. The one thing I can 46 from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge. You can never be the “best surfer” because the ocean 47 an uncountable variety of waves that nobody can ever master. The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and lowing; others are very aggressive (活跃有力的) and 48 . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it 49 from any other sport. I’ve 50 to tell every girl I know to do something that people don’t think girls can do. It’s part of being human to advance to new 51 , so shouldn’t it be expected that girls should step up and start 52 the limits of things boys and men used to dominate (主宰)? There’re women 53 side by side with the President of our country, so why not side by side with the boys 54 the football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to 55 , and they will.
