Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However,
nearly all require some   1    in one"s career in order to attend school full time. Part-time education,
that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the    2   out over time
and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people.    3   , such programs
require a fixed time commitment which can also impact   4    on one"s career and family time.
Of the many    5   to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating
is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method, which allows the students
the    6   to study at his or her own pace to achieve the   7    goals, which are so necessary in today"s
world. The time required to study may be set aside at the student"s convenience with due    8   to all
life"s other requirements. Besides, the student may   9    in distance learning courses from virtually any
place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial assistance may be   10
through regular airmail, telephone, fax machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.
Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject   11    tool with
every subject. This precludes(排除) the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take
a test. Another characteristic of a good distance-learning program is the   12    of the distance-learning
course with the same subject materials as those students taking the course on the home campus. The
resultant diploma or degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is e
mployed.
In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the    13   students but
also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational
benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization.    14   distance learning
programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of retaining(保留) career-minded

Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest
possible words.
When the Internet powerhouse Yahoo wanted to teach ethics(道德标准) to its employees, it
faced a challenge familiar to multinational companies.
Yahoo employs nearly 14,000 people at 25 sites worldwide. They would feel bored at sitting
down in front of a dated video in which actors with 1980s haircuts tell them what to do. So it hired
a company calledThe Network <> to design a game. In the game, the truck
where Yahoo was founded traveled the world, turning into a boat and a helicopter along the way as
it visited some of Yahoo"s foreign offices. Participants play in game show-like scenarios(场景) that
quiz them about conflicts of interest and doing business fairly. And employees note: Yahoo is tracking
how well they do.
Such activities draw more enthusiastic participation and teach more effectively than traditional
methods. They are described as alternative-reality games (ARGs), involving both interactive and
real-world elements. Besides teaching employees, ARGs have also been used in many areas for a
number of different purposes.
From a marketing perspective, a number of very successful ARGs have been written as a way to
build product awareness. A very popular ARG called I Love Bees was produced to market the
2004 video game Halo 2 <>. At its height, I Love Bees received between
two to three million unique visitors over the course of three months.
ARGs are more than just a fun way to learn. They have also been used to solve real world
problems. An ARG called World Without Oil <> was created to obtain
collective input from players about dealing with the world"s dependency on oil. World without Oil
simulates(模拟) the first 32 days of a global oil crisis and anybody could play by creating a personal
story that recorded the imagined reality of their life in the crisis. World Without Oil"s success on a
small budget has opened the door for similar games to engage mainstream Internet users with climate
change, education reform, governmental policy and other timely, vital issues.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
1.What challenge did yahoo face in teaching ethics to its employees?
2.In the game designed for yahoo, participants had to answer questions about ________.
3.What are the three major functions of ARG mentioned in the passage?
4.The success of World Without Oil <> suggests that ARGs can ________.

When doctors urge overweight kids to pick up more activities, reading probably isn"t what they
have in mind.Yet a new study by fatness researchers at Duke University finds that the simple act
of reading-depending on the choice of material-can cause weight loss in teenage girls.
The study"s experimental group included 31 fat girls aged 9 to 13,who took part in the Healthy
Lifestyles Program at Duke Children"s Hospital. The girls read a novel called Lake Rescue, whose
protagonist (主人公) is an overweight teenager who struggles with low selfesteem, feelings of loneliness
and teasing because of her size.A group of 33 girls read a different book called Charlotte in Paris,
which did not have an overweight character, and another group of 17 girls read neither book.
At the end of the sixmonth experiment, all the girls who read books had lost weight, but the girls who
read Lake Rescue lost more. They lowered their body mass index (BMI) by 0.71,compared with
0.33 in the Charlotte group,an average 0.05 increase among the nonreaders.
The idea behind the study, says Dr Sarah Armstrong, director of Healthy Lifestyles, was to find a
way to encourage the girls without adopting the restrictive and often authoritative voice of so many
other nutrition and diet programs.Lake Rescue was the perfect instrument, says Armstrong;it
presentsa likable character to whom the girls could relate and whom they could learn from.As the
book progresses, its protagonist learns to make healthier lifestyle choices and finds an advisor to help
keep her on track.Armstrong says,"She learns that she can become healthier, and the "I can do it"
feeling resonates (产生共鸣) with the teenage girls."

Plants that live in the rainforest have adapted in amazing ways to several very difficult conditions.
This means that the plant has changed something in its "body" or "habits" to make it easier to survive
in difficult conditions. There are several conditions they have had to adapt to.First, the soil of the
forest floor is shallow. Also, the soil of the rainforest is not very rich,or easy to grow in.Next is the
problem of very heavy rain which continues over a large part of the year. Finally, many plants of the
rainforest are food for animals that live there.
The biggest problem that rainforest plants have to adapt to is the lack of sunlight in the rainforest"s
lower levels.Plants have adapted to this problem in several ways. Many plants have very large
leaves. The large leaf is helpful because it has a bigger surface area. The bigger surface area a leaf
has,the more sunlight it can absorb. The canopy trees adapt by growing to be 100 feet tall so that
their leaves can grab all available sunlight.Other plants called lianas (climbing woody vines) have
adapted by rooting themselves in the soil of the forest floor and growing up the trees until they reach
the canopy layer.Still other plants, such as epiphytes, have adapted by growing directly on the trees"
trunks and branches in the canopy and understory layers of the rainforest.
An adaptation to the large amounts of rainfall that many rainforest plants have is called "drip tips".
Their leaves are tapered (逐渐变细) to a sharp point at the end. This allows water to run off the
leaf quickly. There are many other adaptations that rainforest plants have made to their environment.
These will be discussed in detail,as we investigate the plants of the rainforest!
1.Which of the following is a difficulty that the rainforest plants have to face?
A.Changes in their "body" or "habits".
B.Soil that is not very deep.
C.Epiphytes that grow on trees" trunks.
D.The worsening of the natural environment.
2.How do lianas adapt to the environment in the rainforest?
A.They grow under big leaves for protection.
B.They rely on other plants to reach the canopy layer.
C.They change their leaf structure constantly.
D.They grow on other plants" branches.
3.The underlined word "This" in Para.3 probably refers to ________.
A.the takein of sunlight
B.the large amounts of rainfall
C.the leaves" having a sharp point at the end
D.water"s running off the leaves quickly
4.What can be inferred about rainforest plants?
A.They have to face dangers not only from animals but also from each other.
B.Too little sunlight and too much water are the biggest problems they face.
C.Different kinds of plants have different ways to absorb sunlight.
D.All of their adaptations have been investigated in detail.
5.What would be the best title of the passage?
A.How Do Plants Adapt to the Rainforests?
B.Why Do Plants Change Themselves?
C.What Kind of Plants Is the Most Adaptable?
