two of them were busy with pencils and paper, checking their lists of luggage (行李), when there was a ring
at the door. Mrs. Jones went to open it, and saw a well-dressed middle-aged lady outside. The lady came to
welcome them to their new home.
The Joneses invited her in, after apologizing for the state of the flat.
"Oh, please don"t stand on ceremony (典礼)with me," she answered. "Do you know, in some parts of
this town neighbors are not at all friendly. There are some streets, and even some blocks of flats, where
people don"t know their neighbors, not even their next-door ones. But in this block of flats, everybody is
friends with everybody else. We are one big, happy family. I am sure that you will be very happy here."
The well-dressed lady got a shock when she came to visit the flat the next time, because she found a
quite different man and woman in it. Mr. and Mrs. Jones had not had the courage to tell her that they were
not the new owners of the flat, who were going to move in the next day, but the old owners who had lived
beside her for two years without her ever having visited them or even noticed their existence.

it just got louder.
Her teacher gave up in the end and stopped the lessons, but Alice refused to give in. One day she decided
to give a concert and invited her teacher to attend.
The teacher was very worried about what to say after the concert. She knew it would be terrible and it
was. She didn"t want to tell a lie, but she didn"t want to hurt Alice"s feelings, either. At last, she got an idea

noticed that the highway department was doing some reconstruction, although some parts of the road hadn"t
been completed yet. I drove on a completed part of the highway that was flat and smooth for one and a half
hours. Afterwards, the road became a little rough and bumpy again, and there weren"t even any street lights
on the side of the road. We started driving in the early hours of the morning and I think because it was really
early and drivers on the road were tired so they couldn"t concentrate (集中注意力). I saw three separate car
accidents during the journey.
When starting driving in an area that I didn"t know well, I let the other car lead the way and I followed
behind them. As we were driving inside a tunnel, I suddenly saw a truck hit the side of the wall, rebound (反
弹), then turned back onto the middle of the road. The truck nearly hit the car in front of us. I think the driver
of the truck must have fallen asleep at the wheel otherwise this wouldn"t have happened. He nearly caused a
car accident.
I was driving behind the cars and I saw everything happen in front of me. The incident gave me such a
fright that it immediately woke me up. In my mind I kept telling myself that I was driving a car and that I had
to stay alert (清醒). To my relief, all the members in the other car were okay because if that truck really did
hit the car traveling in front of us, I don"t think I"d be able to make it back to Hong Kong. Not only that, all the
passengers in the other car would have to go to hospital.
B. was blocked by three car accidents
C. was bright because of the street lights
D. was being repaired
B. there were no street lights
C. sleepy drivers couldn"t fix their attention
D. the road was very bumpy
B. The truck driver may have fallen asleep when driving.

The Guitar Player One day Tony was crossing the road when he was hit by a car. He fell and broke his arm. An ambulance soon arrived and took Tony to a hospital. There a doctor operated on his arm. Then he put the arm in a cast (石膏). Tony could not move it at all. "You must keep your arm in a cast for six weeks," the doctor said. "That will give the broken bone a chance to heal (愈合)."
