阅读理解。     Several years ago, my family gathered on Cape Cod for a weekend. My parents were there, my sister and
her daughter too, two cousins and, of course, my wife, my son and me. We ate at one of those restaurants
where the menu is written on a blackboard held by a friendly waiter and had a wonderful time. With dinner
concluded, the waiter set the check down in the middle of the table. That"s when it happened. My father did
not reach for the check.
In fact, my father did nothing. Conversation continued. Finally it dawned on me. Me! I was supposed to
pick up the check. After all these years, after hundreds of restaurant meals with my parents, after a lifetime
of thinking of my father as the one with the dollars, it had all changed. I reached for the check and pulled out
my American Express card. My view of myself was suddenly changed. With a stroke of the pen, I was
suddenly an adult.
Some people mark off their life in years, others in events. I am one of the latter, and I think of some events
as rites of passage. I did not become a young man at a particular year like 13, but when a kid strolled into the
store where I worked and called me "mister", I turned around to see whom he was calling. He repeated it
several times-"mister, mister"-looking straight at me. The realization hit like a punch: Me! He was talking to me.
I was suddenly a mister. 1. My father did not reach for the check because ____. A. it was in the middle of the table
B. I was no longer a child
C. he had no money with him
D. he did not notice the check 2. The underlined part "it dawned on me" in the second paragraph means ____. A. I understood
B. it was my turn
C. it surprised me
D. I felt sorry3. According to the passage, which of the following is true? A. None of my family was willing to pay the check.
B. I was not willing to pay the check.
C. We were happy on Cape Cod.
D. We didn"t enjoy our meal. 4. From the passage, we can infer that ____ paid for restaurant meals before. A. I
B. my mother
C. my parents
D. my father

the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of
career (职业).
I wasn"t an excellent student because I didn"t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking
what I might do and found I didn"t have much to offer. I just accepted that l wasn"t the type to have a career.
I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn"t too bad at first. But the problems began
when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We
agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she"d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn"t
often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings
with the children.
One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told
her about my situation. She suggested me that I should do a course and meet a qualification if I wanted to
work with children I didn"t think I would be accepted because I didn"t take many exams in school.
She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot
and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family and got work helping out at a kindergarten.
Now I"ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you
could have a career, even if you aren"t top of the class at school. 1. What is the author"s present job? A. Working part-time in a college.
B Taking care of children for a family.
C. Helping children with their schoolwork.

D. Because she needed a rest after working extra hours. 4. What has the author learned from her own experience? A. Less successful students can still have a career.
B. Qualifications are necessary for a career.
C. Hard work makes an excellent student.
D. One must choose the job she likes.

very hard when the professor asked everyone to introduce themselves. I was very anxious and did not hear
anyone else"s introduction. I buried myself in what I was going to say.
Classes went on and I noticed my American classmates were very active in class. My unwillingness to speak
during class started to worry me when I realized that I was ignored in class. But I did not give up. One simple
way I broke down this fear of speaking was to arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier at the classroom. It gave me time
to _____ class discussions.
The person whom I feared most was the professor. So I found every chance to speak with him before and
after class. When I did not have the chance to talk with the professor in class, I wrote an e-mail or made a date
with him outside the class with questions I had. These were very effective ways to help me speak freely in
class! Since the chance of expressing myself in class was limited, I finished all of my reading and written tasks
before class. One time, the professor asked a question about the reading homework. The whole class was silent
and I suddenly raised my hand and answered it perfectly! That moment I set the world on fire.

Once I started participating in class, I realized how valuable it was. Class discussion was the best way to
learn and memorize things. It also made class a living and enjoyable experience. Participating in class is also like
climbing a ladder. I often prepared very simple questions to use at the beginning of class. Once I started to
speak, it was easier to speak up more. Classroom is the place to learn, so no one would consider you as a fool
even if you put forward simple questions in class. 1. What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)
