Once I went to a railway station near New York. I 36 to take the night train there. 37 of people were pushing into the 38 train. I found a railway official and asked him if I could get a place in a sleeping car, 39 he said sharply, “No, you can’t. The train is full. Don’t 40 me any more.” I was very 41 indeed. I said to the friend who was with me, “ he talked to me like this 42 he doesn’t know that I am a famous writer. If he knew…But before I could 43 my sentence my friend said, “Don’t be 44 . How could that help you? Whoever you are, there are no 45 seats on the train.” I was 46 he was wrong, so I went up to the same official again and told him that I was Mark Twain. But all he said, “I told you not to trouble me any more.” Just then I 47 a young porter in a sleeping car looking at me, He whispered something to the train conductor, and that conductor came over to me and said very 48 , “ Can I help you, sir?” “ I 49 do.” I answered. The porter took out boxes and we got on to the train. When the porter saw we were comfortably 50 in our places, he said, “Now. Is there anything you want, sir? Because you can have whatever you 51 .” After the porter had gone, my friend looked 52 . He said. “I am 53 sorry I said those things to you just now…” Just then the porter came again and said. “ Oh. Sir, I 54 you immediately”. “Really?” I said happily, “of course”, he said. “I recognized you the 55 I saw you and told the conductor that you are Mr Smith, the mayor of New York City.”

The graciousness(有礼貌) and humbleness(谦逊) of his 48 makes me want to continue to stop by with “ 49 ” of food, money or other gifts. That was about five years ago…. Some of the local kids have started the rumor that the house is haunted(闹鬼的)--- and, in a way, it is. It is haunted by 52 of all the people who have lived in it. Every second has 53 me so much. I have been 54 them all day and they are almost up for me.... I hope that someday somebody will 55 me, and drop in on me again. Maybe then I’ll get a new home and an opportunity for a whole new set of memories.

Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet fighter pilot in Viet Nam. After 75 missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb parachuted down into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. One day, Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant when a man from another table came up and said “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Viet Nam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. “I guess it worked”. Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute(降落伞) hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, “I kept wondering what he looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good morning. How are you?’ or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was ‘just a sailor’”. Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds(伞罩) and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachutes. 小题1:Why didn’t Plumb say hello to the sailor each time he passed him on the Kitty Hawk?A.He thought the sailor was just an unimportant man. | B.He didn’t like him at that time. | C.He was very busy then. | D.He didn’t know him well then. | 小题2: What did the sailor do on the Kitty Hawk at the Viet Nam War?A.weaved clothes for the pilots. | B.repaired the wooden table in the ship. | C.helped the jets start. | D.packed the parachutes for the fighter pilots. | 小题3: What does the writer think we should do?A.We should help each other if they are in trouble. | B.We shouldn’t look down upon the sailors. | C.We should be thankful to others’ help. | D.We should be honest to our friends. | 小题4: Which is the best title for the passage?A.A story about a sailor. | B.Who pack your parachutes? | C.Don’t forget your past! | D.Never forget your friends! |

A university graduate described as a “respectable and intelligent” woman is seeking professional help after being convicted of (证明有……罪)shoplifting for the second time in six months. Ana Luz, recently studying for her PhD, has been told she could end up behind bars unless she can control the desire to steal from shops. Luz ,who lives with her partner in Fitzwilliam Road, Cambridge, admitted stealing clothes worth £9.95 from John Lewis in Oxford Street, London, on March 9. Phillip Lemoyne, prosecuting(起诉),said Luz selected some clothes from a display and took them to the ladies’ toilet in the store .When she came out again she was wearing one of the skirts she had selected, having taken off the anti-theft security alarms(防盗警报装置). She was stopped and caught after leaving the store without paying, Mr. Lemoyne said. He added that she was upset on her arrest and apologized for her actions. Luz, 28, was said to have been convicted of shoplifting by Cambridge judges last October, but Morag Duff, defending, said she had never been in trouble with the police before that. “She is ashamed and embarrassed but doesn’t really have any explanation why she did this,” Miss Duff said. “She didn’t intend to steal when she went into the store. She is at a loss to explain it. She is otherwise a very respectable and intelligent young lady. She went to her doctor and asked for advice because she wants to know if there is anything in particular that caused her to do this.” Judge David Azan fined Luz £ 50, and warned : “You’ve got a criminal record .If you carry on like this ,you will end up in prison ,which will ruin your bright future you may have.” Luz achieved a degree in design at university in her native Spain, went on to a famous university in Berlin, Germany for her master’s degree and is now studying for a PhD at Cambridge University, UK. 小题1: What does the underlined sentence “She is at a loss to explain it” mean?A.In her opinion it was a loss to the clothes shops where she stole things. | B.She doesn’t have any idea why she has the desire to steal from shops. | C.She thinks it is a loss for her to explain why she stole things from shops. | D.Personally she feels ashamed and embarrassed for her shoplifting actions. | 小题2:Which of the following best explains the meaning of the word “shoplifting” used in the passage?A.Carrying goods in a lift for a shop. | B.Taking goods to the ladies’ toilet. | C.Selecting some goods from a display. | D.Taking goods from a shop without paying. | 小题3:From the passage we can learn that .A.Ana Luz is already got her PhD at Cambridge University, UK | B.Ana Luz is ashamed and embarrassed and knows why she often did so | C.the university graduate will be put in prison if she steals in shops once more | D.Phillip Lemoyne is the “respectable and intelligent” woman’s defense lawyer |

Directions: The following people are expressing their thoughts (1--4) to show their concern for food, environment and so on. After that are pieces of related information (A--E). Now decide which piece of information would be most suitable for the thought and idea mentioned in questions1---4 and mark your answer letter (A---E) on your answer sheet. There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use. ______小题1: How I was struck by the clear water and fresh air in my childhood! But everything has changed, that is, the clear water and fresh air are nowhere to be found again as they were. Above all, a great deal of waste hardly rots away. _____小题2:More and more people are beginning to have a good knowledge of the importance of a safer and cleaner environment, which in turn forces the business to be cleaned up. ____小题3: I’m very much fond of growing some vegetables of my own in my small garden, for many vegetables on sale in markets are actually becoming more and more dangerous as a result of widespread pesticides. ____小题4: Nowadays it is very convenient for consumers to find and buy green food in supermarkets as they are clearly marked.A.“Organic produce is always better,” Gold said. “The food is free of pesticides, and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.” Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. | B.The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.[ | C.Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment-friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of. | D.Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels (标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing (制造) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising. | E. Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences - but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market,” said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business. |
