Thomas Edison was one of ten said to be the greatest genius of his age. There are only a few men in all of the history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be happy only because someone said he was a genius.“ There is no such thing as genius,” Edison said. He said that what people called genius was mostly hard work. But Edison was a dreamer as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. Nature, he often said, is full of secrets. He tried to understand them; then, he tried to learn what could usefully be done with them. Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people will do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking can give men enjoyment and pleasure. Edison could not understand how anyone could be uninterested in life. As he loved to think, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what ideas he had about life. “ Work,” he answered. “Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make men happier.” He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work. 小题1: Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.Edison invented the electric light. | B.Many other people have changed Edison’s life. | C.Edison has changed the life of many other people. | D.Few men in history can change other people’s life. | 小题2: Edison thought .A.he could be happy if he was a genius | B.genius plays the most important part in one’s success | C.hard work could do better than genius | D.genius could do better than hard work | 小题3: Edison was .A.very much interested in nature | B.interested in discovering the secrets of nature | C.interested in changing people’s ideas | D.uninterested in making people happier by discovering the secrets of nature | 小题4:In Edison’s opinion, .A.thinking can supply people with enjoyment and pleasure as well as help | B.people’s success lies mostly in genius | C.hard work is the second important thing in making people successful | D.there are few secrets for him to discover later |

Dear daughter, You are a wonderful person and your mother and I think the world of you. It will not be long before you leave home to make your way in the world. Can I please give you some friendly advice? Here are some things that you should never do. 1. Never Look Down Upon Yourself. You are great and able to achieve great things so believe in yourself. When things go badly, never stop believing. Some girls get upset, blame themselves and lose self-esteem. All kinds of problems can follow. 2. Never Get Obsessed With Your Appearance. We think you look great (though some of the clothes you wear worry us!). Please be happy with the person ,you are and the body you have. Eat reasonably, take exercise and be healthy. Some girls show too much concern about losing weight or getting the perfect shape. You look fine. 3. Never Compromise Your Personal Safety. Never put yourself at serious risk. This means that you cannot trust people until you really know them and that sometimes you have to avoid things that look like they might be fun. Never get drunk or take drugs. Unluckily there are some bad people out there and it is best not to take risks. 4. Never Give Less Than Your Best. We are very proud of what you have achieved so far. You should be proud too. Keep doing well. Keep trying your hardest at everything you do. No one can ask for more than that. 5. Never Forget That Your Parents Love You. Whatever happens in life, your family will still be your family. Whatever difficulties you meet with, you can always talk to us and we will try to help. We are here for you. 小题1: Why has the father written the letter to his daughter?A.To express his love for her. | B.To give her some advice. | C.To tell her what she should do. | D.To help solve her problems. | 小题2:What does the father think of his daughter’s appearance?A.He thinks she looks fine although she’s unhealthy. | B.He is satisfied with the clothes his daughter wears. | C.He thinks his daughter should be happy with her appearance. | D.He thinks his daughter should lose weight to get the perfect shape. | 小题3:The father advises his daughter not to __________.A.ask her parents for help | B.be proud of what she has achieved | C.believe in herself when things go badly | D.stop trying her hardest at everything she does | 小题4:What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Never do anything funny. | B.Never trust anybody. | C.Never put yourself in danger. | D.Never care about your safety. |
