I never thought about the dangers of growing up during the war because I was only six then. My parents were  36  and both were busy with their work at a hospital. I was often left in the care of my grandmother. Grandma gave Aunt Tracy and I the  37  of taking lunch to my grandfather, her estranged (分居的) husband, who lived  38  in an apartment at the other side of the village.
As usual,  39  we left, Grandma repeated, "There may be war at any time, so stay on the side of the road. Be  40  not to spill (溢出) the food." Aunt Tracy and I  41  the lunch box and hurried to Grandpa’s place.
"Keep down and take cover!" Tracy cried out as we heard some  42 . As we squatted (蹲) at the roadside, I started to feel  43 . Grandpa preferred his food served  44 . If we couldn’t get there on time, his lunch would turn cold! Not wanting the war to slow us down, I said, "Let’s just run for it!"
We tried all the ways we could think of to cross the road, but  45  seemed to work. Suddenly Tracy said, "Bullets travel in a straight line, so we can run in a zigzag (之字形)."Taking a deep breath, we set off again and ran wildly back and forth across the road.,  46 we managed to reach Grandpa’s apartment.
As an adult, I now know what my young mind couldn’t understand then: it’s impossible to go through life without  47 . We may come across difficulties in our life, but we need to be brave, face the problem and carry on.

We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. 36 that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly 37  her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my  38 . I enjoyed having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: “ Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck.”
My heart sank and my mind was 39 with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is a chance to show Holly 40  you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬运车). In her inexperience, she had  41 _the brakes and the gas pedal. I went into Harrods in London (a huge department store I am sure you have heard of) to buy some Minton china plates for a wedding anniversary which was to be a group gift from friends to other friends in Geneva.
Having only 30 minutes between meeting. I whizzed there in a taxi from the office and battled through the milling people on the 2nd day of the sales on the ground floor up to the 5th to the china department. There was a man standing there who was obviously a sales person who I rushed up to and asked if he had this particular china in stock and if it would take long to wrap, etc. He was amazing. He got the plates in seconds, wrapped them up and asked me if I wanted a store card, to which I replied no, because I lived in Switzerland, to which he replied asking if, as I lived abroad, would like a tax rebate form(退税表). After that he showed me what to do, produced a map of the store and told me where I should go for the formalities(程序). That was fabulous! I thanked him and said what wonderful service he had given me. I even asked if he gave this to everyone, to which he answered: “I’m just doing what is required at Harrods”. With that, a tall man in a gray suit approached me and offered his hand to shake mine saying, “Can I introduce myself? I am the Chief Executive of Harrods and what an interesting conversation I have just heard…” He had been wandering through the store (as you should do as a hands-on CEO) and had overheard me thanking this salesman, whose face, I can hardly describe, was frozen in a mixture of delight awe and astonishment!
Can you imagine the salesman going home to his family and friends recounting what the CEO spoke to him after overhearing him being praised by a customer?
