There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every color, with long and difficult names, for competitions. He tried to grow a rose of a new color to win the silver cup for the Rose of the Year. Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen of age were often tempted (引诱) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or near his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day. But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to protect his glass, but nothing that he had done had been useful. He had been to school to report to the headmaster; but this had not done any good. He had tried to drive away the boys that threw stones into his garden; but the boys could run faster than he could, and they laughed at him from far away. He had even picked up all the stones that he could find around his garden, so that the boys would have nothing to throw; but they soon found others. At last Mr. Flowers had a good idea. He put up a large notice made of good, strong wood, some meters away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble; the boys were much more tempted to throw stones at the notice than at the glass-houses. 小题1:It was Mr. Flowers’ hope to ________.A.build glass-houses in his free time | B.grow the Rose of the Year in a silver cup | C.win a silver cup for growing a rose of a new color | D.grow a rose with the longest name. | 小题2:Boys were often tempted to ________.A.throw stones at Mr. Flowers’ glass-house | B.throw stones at Mr. Flowers from their school | C.be in or near by Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses | D.play with Mr. Flowers near his glass-houses | 小题3:Mr. Flowers stayed in or near by his glass-houses _______.A.at times when school-boys were walking near them | B.all the school day when there were no boys about | C.where he could not be seen by the boys passing | D.in his free time at the beginning and end of the school day | 小题4:Mr. Flowers had tried to ______ to protect his glass.A.be on watch in his free time | B.ask the headmaster for help | C.pick up all the stones around his garden | D.do all the above | 小题5:Mr. Flowers’ good idea was to ______.A.write some words on the glass | B.put up a large notice to cover his glass-houses | C.give the boys something else to throw stones at | D.send for policemen |

I will be the first to say that I am not materialistic. My friends regard me as a goody-goody; my parents say I am conservative and modest when it comes to clothes. None of my skirts or shorts end above my knees. So why, why did I feel so invited? My family and I were in Target, and there it was, waiting. A skirt, specifically designed not to cover anything. It looked like something that one of those modern schoolgirls would wear. I checked my purse. The skirt cost $10. I had the money. I could buy it. I imagined walking into school and my friends’ jaws (下巴) dropping. Guys would ask me out, and I would be happy. I could buy it, no, — I should buy it. I showed my mother. She was surprised but said it was my decision. My sister looked on enviously. I went into the dressing room to try it on. So sure was I that this skirt would change me, somehow make me not what I am but what I wished to be. I slid my jeans off and put it on. I looked in the mirror. There I was — a terrible girl in a Superman T-shirt and sneakers. My glasses fogged up as I started to cry. The skirt did not change me. Though it fit well and might make me look good in the eyes of today’s world, it was not me. I am not a girl who wears cool clothes to fit in. I took the thing off and slid back into the comfort of modesty. My mom knocked on the door. “Emily, are you okay?” I wiped away my tears. “I’m fine.” I looked in the mirror again and saw a slim girl with funny glasses. I saw myself. 小题1:In the author’s eyes the skirt that interested her was ______.A.not modern | B.very short | C.too expensive | D.poorly designed | 小题2:The author thought if she went to school in this skirt her schoolmates would be ______.A.shocked | B.hurt | C.confused | D.happier | 小题3:The underlined sentence in the 3rd paragraph indicates the author ______.A.hesitated about buying the skirt | B.made up her mind to buy the skirt | C.was able to afford to buy the skirt | D.worried about others’ opinion on the skirt | 小题4:The author cried because ______.A.she found that she looked ugly in the skirt | B.she was aware the skirt didn’t fit her well | C.she realized it’s a wrong decision to make a change | D.she was disappointed the skirt failed to change her |

I felt excited, curious and nervous at the same time. I was excited because I would be skipping(跳级)two grades. I was curious because I didn"t know how high school students were taught. However, I was most nervous at the idea that I would be doing high school homework. I had just walked into the class when the bell rang. This wasn"t a good start. But the kid in front of me looked very friendly. Luckily, since it was the first day of school, my teacher talked for about half of the period and we just had the rest of the period to start the class. I didn"t know what he was saying at first, but when I saw the problems on the paper, I knew what to do. The next day, the kid said hi and I said hi back. We got into a conversation. It seemed that whenever I was talking to my friend, everyone stopped staring at (盯着看)me. Then the class started. It was easy. But I was still uncomfortable because I couldn"t look around without meeting others’eyes, so I just kept my eyes on the whiteboard and on my textbook. However, my friend didn"t show up the next day, and the eighth graders just kept on staring at me. I didn"t know why. The next day everything changed. My friend was back to school. I was praised for my homework. Everyone stared at me less. Some started to be a little friendlier towards me. I felt at home at last here. My teachers also seemed pretty nice. 小题1:If the author didn"t skip, he should study in _________ .A.the fourth grade | B.the sixth grade | C.the seventh grade | D.the eighth grade | 小题2:What may make the author curious?A.What his old friends are doing. | B.How high school students study. | C.How he will do his high school homework. | D.What the eighth graders" homework is. | 小题3:Why did the author always keep his eyes on the whiteboard and the textbook?A.To pay attention to his teachers. | B.To attract his teachers" attention. | C.To follow his teachers" teaching. | D.To avoid meeting others" eyes. | 小题4:According to the passage, we know that the author ___________ .A.got along well with his new class very soon | B.felt sorry about having skipped two grades | C.had one friend in his class all the time | D.got used to others" stares in the classroom |
