When Regina Mary" parents refused to let her get a horse ,the smart 15-year-olddidn’t sit in her room and complain. Instead she turned to a cow called Luna to make her riding dreams come true. Hours of training ,and tons of treats later, the results are impressive: not only do the two regularly go on long rides through the southern German countryside, they can even do some difficult jumps successfully. Joseph Rudyard Kipling, who enjoyed early success with his poems, was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, India. Some of Kipling’s earliest and fondest memories are of his and sister Alice’s trips to the fruit market with their woman servant, or walking with his parents alongside the sea at night. The beautiful days were to end when in 1871 Rudyard and Alice were sent to school in Southsea, England, to live with Captain Holloway and his wife. She ruled the boarding house with punishment and Kipling was often beaten by her and her son. “Then the old Captain died, and I was sorry, for he was the only person in that house as far as I can remember who ever threw me a kind word.” So he wrote in his later books. Kipling soon learned to read and found comfort in literature and poetry. Freedom from the Holloway household was gained when he spent one month a year in London with his mother’s kind sister Aunt Georgie and her husband, pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne Jones and their children. Those months of December were a really paradise to Kipling. In 1877 Kipling’s mother returned to England and collected him so that he could attend the United Services College in Devon. Now he was able to settle into the life of a student and in his second year started writing his own Schoolboy Lyric poems printed by his parents. In 1878 his father took him to the Paris Exhibition where he was allowed to wander freely and gained much appreciation for French culture which he wrote about in “Souvenirs of France”. 小题1: Kipling first left his parents in __________.小题2: Kipling fell in love with literature and poetry __________.A.before the old Holloway died | B.when he was a little boy with his parents | C.when he attended the United Services College | D.when he was in school, living with the Holloways | 小题3: From the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 we learn that __________.A.he felt free and happy with his aunt’s family | B.he felt terrible when he stayed with the old Captain | C.the death of the old captain influenced him a lot | D.the days at his aunt’s helped him become a successful poet |

Everyone wants some degree of success. Many people believe that they deserve success simply because they believe that they deserve success. But there is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential (有影响的) friends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors (上司). This injustice discouraged the young engineer and many of her colleagues. It also meant that the factory was much less efficient than it could have been. At the same time, we should not be pessimistic (悲观的). More and more the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their faces fit. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can"t be right! $ 100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?" The engineer wrote out a new bill: "For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap. $99." 小题1:The engineer at the chemical plant was not promoted because _____.A.it was politically less good for the boss to accept her than the man | B.her boss did not think she had the fight qualifications for the job | C.the man who got the promotion was more experienced than she was | D.it is more difficult for a woman to get a promotion than for her male colleague | 小题2:The engineer who repaired the machine was right in charging $ 100 because____. A.he hit the machine to get it started again | B.the factory owner could not have repaired it himself | C.he was charging for his knowledge and expert skills | D.he was the only person who could find out what was wrong with it | 小题3:What can we learn about the author"s attitude toward the widespread belief that "people get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it"?A.He quite agrees with it. | B.He doesn"t express his opinion his opinion at it. | C.He completely disagrees with it. | D.He doesn"t quite agree with it. | 小题4:According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?A.Having influential friends or right background seems helpful sometimes. | B.The engineer had good reason to overcharge the factory owner. | C.Not all those who are good in their jobs have the chance to be promoted. | D.Those who are good in their jobs are still largely needed by the modern society. |

I was waiting for the elevator I heard MacArthur calling, " What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me a microphone (麦克风) and asked me to broadcast an game. On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother"s words: " Keep on trying until some day you succeed. Something wouldn"t have happened if not for that previous failure. " I often wonder what my life might have taken if I"d got the job at Montgomery

As a high school athletics coach, I gave a speech about football to students and parents, aiming at getting new team members :I talked about how"everyone can benefit from football. This year, a worried-looking couple approached me. Their son, who had a sickly childhood, really wanted to play football. They"d tried to talk him out of it, but he had his heart set on joining the team. When they told me his name , my heart sank. Michael was short and thin. He was a lonely kid and the constant target of other kids" jokes. I knew Michael would never make it. But so close to my "football is for everyone" speech, I told them we could give it a try. On the opening day of practice, Michael was the first player on the field. We started a one-mile jog around the track. Repeatedly he fell, each time picking himself up. The same thing happened for weeks. But Michael put his whole heart into the training. Cradually, Michael gained strength both socially and physically. He began to laugh and most of the teammates became friendly. By the last week of practice Michael could run the mile without falling. He asked me to add a few more exercises he could work on his own. Soon , Michael ran the opening mile faster than anyone. One day after practice, the team captain, Steve, came up to me. He was talented but lazy.He was popular with students even though he could be heartless. Steve pointed to the field where Michael was jogging all alone and asked me why he was still out there. I told Steve to ask him. The next night, I was surprised to see Steve exercising right next to Michael. Finally our big game came-at first we were losing by twelve points. I could see that some kids had already lost heart. But Michael was playing as hard as he could , begging the team to keep trying. Finally we won the game by one point in the final ten seconds. At our celebration dinner, we always gave a big award to the most productive player. Steve had scored the most points that season, and everyone cheered as he received his award. " There"s someone who deserves it more than I do," Steve said, " Everything I accomplished, and everything the team accomplished this season, is thanks to one person-Michael. " The entire team cheered as Steve turned the prize over to the player who had inspired them all. 小题1:The author gave a speech to the students and parents in order to ____.A.bring in new team members | B.teach them how to play football | C.tell them about the benefits of playing football | D.help those parents who are worried about their children | 小题2:How did the author react after the couple told him their son"s name?A.He was very excited about accepting Michael on the team. | B.He refused to accept Michael because he had no talent for sports. | C.He decided to accept Michael though he was unwilling to do so. | D.He agreed to accept Michael because he was moved by his determination. | 小题3: What happened to Michael after a few weeks" training?A.He gave up training. | B.He began to laugh at others. | C.He often protected others in the football field. | D.He became strong both in friendly relations and in body. | 小题4: Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.The Road to Success | B.Heart of a Champion | C.Steve, the Real Winner | D.A Player of Patience |
