Everyone wants some degree of success. Many people believe that they deserve success simply because they believe that they deserve success. But there is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential (有影响的) friends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors (上司). This injustice discouraged the young engineer and many of her colleagues. It also meant that the factory was much less efficient than it could have been. At the same time, we should not be pessimistic (悲观的). More and more the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their faces fit. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can"t be right! $ 100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?" The engineer wrote out a new bill: "For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap. $99." 小题1:The engineer at the chemical plant was not promoted because _____.A.it was politically less good for the boss to accept her than the man | B.her boss did not think she had the fight qualifications for the job | C.the man who got the promotion was more experienced than she was | D.it is more difficult for a woman to get a promotion than for her male colleague | 小题2:The engineer who repaired the machine was right in charging $ 100 because____. A.he hit the machine to get it started again | B.the factory owner could not have repaired it himself | C.he was charging for his knowledge and expert skills | D.he was the only person who could find out what was wrong with it | 小题3:What can we learn about the author"s attitude toward the widespread belief that "people get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it"?A.He quite agrees with it. | B.He doesn"t express his opinion his opinion at it. | C.He completely disagrees with it. | D.He doesn"t quite agree with it. | 小题4:According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?A.Having influential friends or right background seems helpful sometimes. | B.The engineer had good reason to overcharge the factory owner. | C.Not all those who are good in their jobs have the chance to be promoted. | D.Those who are good in their jobs are still largely needed by the modern society. |

试题分析 作者用两个故事说明许多人们认为应当成功就一定成功这个公认的道理。 小题1:A细节题。根据第二段Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors 得知应该选 A项。此类题目要找准关键词,promoted所出现的位置,再根据题意进行判断。 小题2:C细节题。根据最后一段最后一句话For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap. $99.,可知为自己的专业知识而要的价钱,故选C项。 小题3:D细节题。根据第二段第一句话话中widespread belief ,说明这是个普遍的认知,而紧接下一句话提到Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive,句子中的while表示转折,故表达作者是反对这个观点的。故选 D项。 小题4:B 细节题。在上一题中作者已经否定掉了这种观点,故A项是错误的。而C项的观点错在not all 上,故C项错误。而D项本文没有提到。故选择B项正确。 考点 故事类阅读 |

As a high school athletics coach, I gave a speech about football to students and parents, aiming at getting new team members :I talked about how"everyone can benefit from football. This year, a worried-looking couple approached me. Their son, who had a sickly childhood, really wanted to play football. They"d tried to talk him out of it, but he had his heart set on joining the team. When they told me his name , my heart sank. Michael was short and thin. He was a lonely kid and the constant target of other kids" jokes. I knew Michael would never make it. But so close to my "football is for everyone" speech, I told them we could give it a try. On the opening day of practice, Michael was the first player on the field. We started a one-mile jog around the track. Repeatedly he fell, each time picking himself up. The same thing happened for weeks. But Michael put his whole heart into the training. Cradually, Michael gained strength both socially and physically. He began to laugh and most of the teammates became friendly. By the last week of practice Michael could run the mile without falling. He asked me to add a few more exercises he could work on his own. Soon , Michael ran the opening mile faster than anyone. One day after practice, the team captain, Steve, came up to me. He was talented but lazy.He was popular with students even though he could be heartless. Steve pointed to the field where Michael was jogging all alone and asked me why he was still out there. I told Steve to ask him. The next night, I was surprised to see Steve exercising right next to Michael. Finally our big game came-at first we were losing by twelve points. I could see that some kids had already lost heart. But Michael was playing as hard as he could , begging the team to keep trying. Finally we won the game by one point in the final ten seconds. At our celebration dinner, we always gave a big award to the most productive player. Steve had scored the most points that season, and everyone cheered as he received his award. " There"s someone who deserves it more than I do," Steve said, " Everything I accomplished, and everything the team accomplished this season, is thanks to one person-Michael. " The entire team cheered as Steve turned the prize over to the player who had inspired them all. 小题1:The author gave a speech to the students and parents in order to ____.A.bring in new team members | B.teach them how to play football | C.tell them about the benefits of playing football | D.help those parents who are worried about their children | 小题2:How did the author react after the couple told him their son"s name?A.He was very excited about accepting Michael on the team. | B.He refused to accept Michael because he had no talent for sports. | C.He decided to accept Michael though he was unwilling to do so. | D.He agreed to accept Michael because he was moved by his determination. | 小题3: What happened to Michael after a few weeks" training?A.He gave up training. | B.He began to laugh at others. | C.He often protected others in the football field. | D.He became strong both in friendly relations and in body. | 小题4: Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.The Road to Success | B.Heart of a Champion | C.Steve, the Real Winner | D.A Player of Patience |

My nephew"s 10-year-old son came for a visit one hot,July weekend. I persuaded him to inside and joined him in a game. After for an hour, I suggested that we relax for a while. I fell into my favorite recliner(躺椅)to let my neck muscles relax. He"d slipped out of the room and I was catching a few enjoyable moments of peace and quiet. "Look,Alice,”he said as he ran over to the chair where I was sitting"I found a kite. Could we go outside and it?" Glancing out a nearby window, I noticed it was outside.“I"m sorry, Tripper,.” I said, sad to see his eyes. "The wind is not blowing today. The kite won"t fly.” The 10-year-old replied,“I think it"s windy enough. I can get it to fly,”he answered as he ran out to the back door Up and down in the yard he ran, pulling the kite to a small length of string. He ran back and forth,as hard as his ten year-old legs would carry him, looking back at the kite behind. After about ten minutes of unsuccessful determination, he came back in. I asked, "How did it go?" "Fine,”he said, not wanting to admit .“I got it to fly some” As he walked past me to return the kite to the closet shelf, I heard him say under his breath, "I guess I"ll have to wait for the .” At that moment I heard another Voice speak to my . "Alice, sometimes you are just like that. You want to do it your way instead of waiting for the Wind.,, And the voice was right. We usually want to use our own efforts to what we want to do. We wait for the Wind only after we have done all we can and have exhausted(耗尽) our own .We must learn how to rely on Him in the first place!

Back in the 15th century, in a tiny village in Germany, lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order to keep food on file table, the father, a goldsmith(金匠)by , worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade. Despite their seemingly condition, two of the eldest children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, they knew well that their father would never be able to either of them to study at the Academy. After many long discussions at night in their bed, the two boys finally worked out an agreement. They would toss(掷)a coin. The would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, his winning brother for the academy. Then, in four years, he would support the other one. Then Albrecht Durer won the toss and to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation(轰动)- By the time he graduated, he was beginning to considerable fees for himself.
