The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.
The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influence like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for all that they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age. In a study published this year, people in their eighties reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep.
Researchers surveyed more than 150,000 American adults. The study, led by Michael Grander at the University of Pennsylvania, appeared in the journal Sleep.
The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

小题1:根据“Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right,”可知,当一个人年龄越大,他就会感到越幸福。The older you get, the 71. ________ you are!
小题2:根据第二段的“The findings came from a Gallup survey...” 故填Findings/Results。
小题3:根据第四段“But the people least likely to report ...seventies and eighties”可知,七八十岁的人最不可能出现消极情绪。故填least。
小题4:根据第五段“However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.” except that... 故填except。
小题5:根据第六段“So why would happiness increase with age?”
小题6:根据第七段“as people get older, they become more thankful for all that they have”可知,all 是先行词,that引导定语从句,all that相当于what,定语从句中that作宾语可省略,故填what/all。
小题7:根据第七段“have better control of their emotions”可知,这里考查词形转换,需填动词control。故填control。
小题8:根据第八段“Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age...people in their eighties reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep”可知,幸福感不是唯一随着年龄增长而改善的问题,睡眠也是另一个。have effects on...
小题9:根据最后一段“The survey did find an increase during middle age”可知,人到中年,睡眠问题会增加,这里需要填动词,故填increase。
小题10:根据On the one hand可知,这里说的是另一方面,即on the other hand。故填hand。

4 Ways to Fight Depression
If you feel depressed, it"s best to do something about it — depression doesn"t just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or an expert, here are 4 things you can do to feel better.
1. Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you like. In addition to getting these exercises, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Try downward-facing dog or legs-up-the-wall pose (you can find these poses on yoga websites). Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation(冥想) — can also help people with depression feel better.
2. Mind your food. _______________ can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper food can influence a person"s mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don"t feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going).
3. Identify troubles. Try to identify any situations that have made you depressed. Once you find out the causes, turn your attention to something positive. Take action to solve problems. Ask for help if you need it. Feeling connected to friends and family can help relieve depression. (It may also help them feel there"s something they can do instead of just watching you hurt. )
4. Look on the bright side. Depression affects a person"s thoughts, making everything seem unhappy and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life.
Most of all, don"t forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal.
