Two Stanford University students, David Filo and Jerry Yang started Yahoo in 1994. They started by making a list of
their favourite webpages. When their list got longer, they made a database(数据库) to keep their information. They let
everybody use it for free. Soon, thousands of people began to use their service.
They then made a new kind of software. It could take certain information and arrange it for someone to look at. If you
search for, say, "blue whales", the engine will give you a list of webpages with those words.
Yahoo became a public company in 1996. Filo and Yang, still young men, became rich. As their company grew, they
went on working hard. They improved their software. They also added more services, like shopping, free e-mail, in many
different countries and languages.

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist.
So he invented a very simple camera, He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden.
That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another
Frenchman, Look a picture of his reading-room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his
picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. The kind of photo was called a
Daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre"s way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all
round the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.
In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and
moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of film and other machines. But
this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard.
Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The
pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike (栩栩如生).
Photographers also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just
taken of the real world; they showed ideas and feelings, like other kinds of art.

or sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have their ways of communicating with each
other.
Can you see the rabbit"s tail? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, theyrun away. They
know that they are in danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given
them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of "language". When a cobra(眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its head and
makes itself look fierce. This worns other animals. When a bee has found food, it. goes back to its home.
It cannot " tell" the other bees where the food is by speaking tothem, but it does a little dance. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals "say" things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near, A
cat purrs(发出呼噜声) when it is pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own
meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make a sound like "Oh" or "Ah" when

Do you use your right hand more or left hand more? Very few us use both of our hands well. Most
people use right hands, only about five people of a hundred use left hands. New-born babies can take
things with either of their hands, but in about two years, they like to use their right hands. Scientists don"t
know why this happens. Thcy"ve studied it. They think our animal ancestors used their right hands, this
may not be true. Monkeys are our closest. relation in the animal world. Scientists have found that
monkeys like to use one of their hands more than the other. but it can be either hand. There are as many
right-handed monkeys as the left-handed ones. Next time you visit the zoo and watch the monkeys
carefully. You"Il see that some of them will use their right hands and others will use their lcft hands, but
men use their right hands better and this makes life difficult for the lefthanded ones. We live in a
right-handed world.
Some scientists have found out that more of successful people are left-handed, but they don"t know
why. But they are working hard to discover the secret.
( ) 1. Very few of us use both of our hands.
( ) 2. About 5% people use their left hands.
( ) 3. The left-handed live easily because most people use their left hands.
( ) 4. New-born babies use their right hands more.
( ) 5. Scientists don"t know the reason why more of successful people are lcft-handed.
Sometimes the weather gets bad. That can be the end of a boat, and the end of everyone in it.
Accidents can happen easily and quickly.
One family once had an accident with some big fish. The fish swam under their boat and bit (咬) holes
in it. The sea water came in, of course, and the boat soon sank (沉没). Hr, these people had another
small boat-a lifeboat, and they all got into that. They lived and hoped for many days. They ate and
slept, and they always hoped. At last a ship found them.
How do people live in a very small lifeboat? Perhaps for weeks or months? They must be strong in
every way. They must have hope-they want to live. But you cannot cat and drink hope.
You cannot drink sea water. Drink a lot of sea water and you will quickly die. Sailors (海员) can
drink rain water. They must catch rain water in their boat. They must also catch fish and birds for food.
Lifeboats do not carry a cooker (炊具), and so the sailors cannot cook their food. Raw fish (生鱼) and
bird meat is not very nice. But there is no other choice in a lifeboatl The sailors must eat
raw food, or they will die.
What do people think about in a life boat"l They think about land, a warm bed,dry clothes, fresh water and food, food, food.
