teenagers are overweight, and some of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love
food with a lot of fat, oil, salt, and sugar. People often call this kind of food"junk food".
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don"t have
breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don"t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent
survey (调查) at one school, scientists found that over two-thirds of the students didn"t follow a healthy
diet (饮食). They didn"t like vegetables, and many of them didn"t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat
food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children"s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:
★ Teenagers shouldn"t eat too much junk food.
★ Teenagers need to eat some fruits and vegetables every day.

Milk is the natural food for mammalian (哺乳动物) babies. It helps them grow strong because it is rich
in protein (蛋白质), calcium (钙) and vitamins. Milk can also help you sleep better because it calms you
down.
But remember to drink milk with care. Find out how old the milk is. Make sure it is fresh and hasn"t gone
bad. Don"t drink milk when your stomach is empty. Eat some bread or corn at the same time. That"ll help
you take in more protein and vitamins.
Doctors say teens need at least 500ml of milk a day. That"s two or three cups. Milk-drinking started long
ago, as early as 6,000-8,000BC. At that time people started to keep cows, sheep and goats to get their milk.
Of course what you drink today isn"t that fresh from the cow. People cool the fresh milk down to 40℃ to
stop the bacteria (细菌)growing. In factories, milk is pasteurized (灭菌) to stop it growing bad. After
disinfections (消毒) and packaging, it goes to the supermarkets.
Yoghourt also comes from milk. People make some special bacteria to change the taste of milk and
make the nutrients (营养) in it easier for people to take in. Maybe that"s why it"s getting more popular
with people!

Chinese doctors believe we need a balance of cool yin and hot yang to be healthy.
In China, herbs are the main medicine but in western countries they use tablets (药片). In China, if you
are quiet and always tired, Chinese doctors might think you have too much yin. You should eat more hot
yang food. It can give you some energy (能量). But in western countries, doctors will check (检查) your
body. They might give you some tablets to cure (治愈) your disease. People who are easily stressed out and
angry might have too much yang in there bodies. Chinese doctors believe they should eat more yin food.
Now, people all over the world like herbs, because they think those herbs are healthy and they can help
them eat a balanced diet.

Many people believe that French people are very different from Americans. This is certainly true where
eating habits are concerned (有关的)! According to a report by the World Health Organization (世卫组织),
each year French people eat four times more better than Americans. In addition, they eat more vegetables,
potatoes, grain and fish. Yet, despite (不管) the fact that they eat larger amounts of these foods, the French
take in about the same number of calories each day as Americans. French and American men consume (消耗)
about 2,500 calories each day on average. French and American women take in about 1,600 calories daily.
How can this be? If the French are eating more of certain types of foods, shouldn"t this add up to more
calories? And why are so few French people overweight compared to Americans? The answer is that
Americans consume 18 times more refined (精制的) sugar than the French, and drink twice as much
whole milk!
Although many Americans believe the French end up each meal with gooey (胶粘的) desserts, this just
isn"t so. Except for special occasions, dessert in a typical French home consists of fresh fruit or cheese.
Many American families, on the other hand, like to end their meals with a bowl or two of ice cream or another
sweet treat.
