Basketball Builds a Bridge
BELL GARDENS,California.Kobe Bryant can control a basketball game.He plays guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.Now,he has a relationship with China.Bryant admires China.China has goodwill toward him.Bryant is acting as a bridge between East and West.He is a part of several cross-cultural exchanges.

About 150 students at five schools take part in the language and culture program.Shannon Mayock works with the After-School All-Stars.This program provides extra educational support to certain students.Mayock says the group hopes to offer its program to more schools over the next few years.
Bryant's work with After-School All-Stars has to do with his love for China.China has eagerly taken in the basketball star.China has the world's largest population.Bryant is well known there.The country got to know him during the 2008 Olympic Games.These were in Beijing.Bryant was a leader on the U.S.basketball team.His National Basketball Association (NBA) jersey is the top-seller in China.It outsells the jersey of NBA-star Yao Ming.Ming is from Shanghai.
Nike,Inc.is happy about the goodwill between Bryant and China.That's because Nike is Bryant's shoe sponsor.Nike uses Bryant's growing fame.He is in many Chinese ads and stores.
Bryant's interest in the After-School All-Stars program is about more than just basketball.It's about more than learning Chinese culture.More important,Bryant said,is that young Americans become familiar with places beyond where they live.Bryant himself went to school in Italy.His father played basketball there after leaving the NBA.Living in another country taught Bryant to be open toward other cultures.
