个人觉得应该是"(接触或是)尝试一下新鲜事物"的意思
dip our toes into the cold water 用脚指沾冷水
我是这么理解的:不用脚指头沾一下水,你怎么知道那水是冷是热呢?所以这里不是也不可能是字面上的意思,而是"(接触或)尝试一下新鲜事物"之意
