The beat generation mainly referred to the youth who were born and brought up around the Second World War. They showed their ignorance of almost everything traditional, such as government authority ,respect for parents, one’s duty, moral standards, and traditional customs. They developed a kind of absolute individualism and liberty. They preferred long hair, mini dresses or close fitting clothes to show off the figure. They advocated (倡导)freedom of sex and cohabitation (同居).Their influence could be seen from the fact that about one third of the American couples living together were not married by law. And the divorce rate was very high. The endless U.S wars abroad and sharp class struggle at home caused many American youths to develop a kind of cynicism. They doubted the existing social system, possibility of harmonious human relations, and the long honored standard for correct behavior. They felt society overlooked their needs. Therefore, they refused to do any duty that was required of them by society. They declared “Don’t believe anyone over thirty.” All this came from the sick society. It’s wrong to imagine they all fought against capitalism in support of revolutionary things. Some of their ideas were even more decadent (颓废的)and impractical. It was an abnormal phenomenon in an abnormal society.

generation practiced cohabitation?

A. a state of mind against realism

In recent years many countries have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts believe that the answer is to make jobs more varied. Do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? There is something to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker"s life more enjoyable, it does not make him work harder. So variety is not important.
Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important and there is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is very little that can be done to achieve this.
Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are said to be experimenting with having many small production lines rather than a large one, so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem then that the degree of worker contribution is important.
To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important, but perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if companies succeed in making workers" jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them.
72. Which of the following things will not increase productivity?
A. Making jobs more varied.
B. Longer working hours.
C. Giving workers the freedom to do his jobs in their own way.
D. Increasing the workers" contribution to production.
73. The last sentence in this passage means that if companies manage to make workers" jobs more interesting, _________.
A. they will want more money
B. they will demand shorter working hours
C. more money and shorter working hours are important
D. more money and shorter working hours will not be so important to them

Whether playing, shopping, studying, or just surfing, today’s kids are taking advantage of all the World Wide Web has offered. When it comes to their personal information online, though, who’s in charge? The Federal Trade Commission has established new rules to make sure that youngsters’ privacy (隐私) is protected while they are online.
Website operators must:
Post the privacy policy. Websites directed to children or to collecting information from kids under 13 must post a notice of their information-collection practices that includes:
*Types of personal information they collect from kids, such as name, home address, e-mail address, or hobby.
*How the site will use the information, for example, to notify contest winners, or make the information available through a child’s participation in a chat room.
*Whether personal information is forwarded to a third party.
Get parental permission. In many cases, a site must obtain parental permission before collecting, using, or disclosing personal information about a child. Permission is not required when a site is collecting an e-mail address to respond to a request from the child, to provide notice to the parent, to ensure the safety of the youngster or the site, or to send a newsletter—as long as the site notifies parents and gives them an opportunity to say no to the arrangement.
Parents should:
Look for a privacy policy on the website. The policy must be available through a link on the website’s homepage, or on the homepage of the section for kids. Read the policy closely. If you find a website that doesn’t post basic protections for children’s personal information, ask for details about their information-collection practices.
Decide whether to give permission. You can give permission and say no later to collecting, using or disclosing your children’s information.
Ask to see the information your child has given. Make sure that your kid’s information isn’t given out improperly.
