He almost didn’t see the old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front her Mercedes and got out. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. He said, “I am here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.” Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was just passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened, had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were many people who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “And think of me.” He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. 小题1:This story most probably took place_______.A.in a garage | B.on a highway | C.in a busy street | D.near a gas station | 小题2:When the man approached the old lady, the first thing he did was to______.A.ask what was wrong with her car | B.get the old lady out of her car | C.change her tire as soon as possible | D.make her know he wanted to help her | 小题3:The underlined part in Paragraph 6 suggests that________.A.the old lady had got ready to pay the man | B.the old lady was grateful to the man | C.the man had a lot of difficulty changing the tire | D.the man didn’t stop changing the tire | 小题4:Which of the following words can best describe the man?A.Warm-hearted and sensitive. | B.Careful and serious. | C.Thoughtful and helpful. | D.Generous and open-minded. | 小题5: It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______________.A.the man was happy after helping the old lady | B.the man received a lot of money from the old lady | C.the man made the old lady feel cold and depressed | D.the man felt extremely frustrated all the way home |

It was her laughing that drew my attention. Note taking really wasn’t all that funny. Walking over to the offender (someone that does something wrong), I asked for the 36 . Frozen, she refused to give it to me. I waited, all attention in the classroom on the quiet 37 between teacher and student. When she finally 38 it over she whispered, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it.” It was a hand-drawn 39 of me, teeth blackened and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth. I managed to fold it up calmly. My mind, 40 , was working angrily as I struggled not to 41 . I figured I knew the two students who were most likely to draw the picture. It would do them some 42 to teach them a lesson, and maybe it was high time that I did it! Thankfully, I was able to keep myself 43 . When there were about six minutes remaining, I showed the class the picture. They were all silent as I told them how 44 this was for me. I told them there must be a reason 45 and now was their chance to write down anything they needed to tell me. Then I let them write silently while I sniffled(抽鼻子) in the back of the classroom. As I 46 the notes later, many of them said something like, “I’ve got nothing against you,” or “I’m sorry you were hurt.” A number of them said, “You give us too much homework.” Some kids said, “We’re 47 of you.” But two notes, from the girls who I 48 were behind the picture, had a list of issues. I was too 49 , too strict… Reading those notes, I realized that over the course of this year, instead of 50 my students, I had begun commanding them to 51 . Where I thought I was driving them to success I was 52 driving them away. I had some apologizing to do. But the next day in the classroom, one boy and one girl each handed me a card. The one 53 by all the boys expressed sincere regret for the ugly joke. The one from the girls asked for 54 . This was a lesson for both the kids and me. Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the 55 .

A professor I have worked pretty closely with has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. It has been devastating(悲惨的) for his family and heartbreaking for his students. What made him extraordinary was not only that he was a rising star. He had only recently collected the highest honors for young researchers at the White House. We truly admire him—as someone put it, ‘He always has a smile and a kind word for everyone.” It is very hard to find someone who is extremely intelligent should be so nice a human being. I decided that we needed him to know our attitude and also how we are all praying for his recovery. I bought him a simple card which read, ‘Healing thoughts and wishes coming your way.” I met all the students he worked closely with and got them to sign on it. Each student in his laboratory signed and also added a message. ‘We love you so much”, ‘We miss you! We need you back here—recover soon”… These were some of the messages that were written. Most of the students were really glad we were doing this and said it was a very good idea to give it to him. He is still undergoing intense treatment, and along with his family is trying his best to stay optimistic and hopeful. I didn’t see a trace of self-pity or sadness when I met him last week. Instead, he paid attention to every word of my presentation and asked me several questions related to my work. I was amazed at how much he gave his 100% on that day in spite of being in pain because of chemotherapy( 化疗),he did not know if he even had another month to live. “I am trying to focus on staying positive, hoping to be back this summer,” he said. Needless to say, I saw an expression of joy and hope on his face as he opened the card. He said he was truly touched to see the messages from the students he worked closely with. There is one thing I learnt from last week: It is so important to tell people how much they mean to us and what an inspiration they are before it becomes too late. My professor, in spite of being too sick to teach classes, has managed to continue being a great teacher, introducing his last valuable message to us. 小题1:The professor was admired because _______.A.he was very intelligent | B.he had won many honors | C.he had noble personalities | D.he was very determined | 小题2:What do the underlined words “our attitude” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.Our worry about his health. | B.Our pray for his health. | C.Our admiration for him. | D.Our pity for him. | 小题3: When the writer visited the professor at hospital, what surprised him was that the professor ________. A.was suffering form great pain | B.was still very confident | C.didn’t know he would die soon | D.still cared for others | 小题4: Of the following statements, the writer may agree that _________.A.the professor loves his job very much | B.few students supported the writer’s decision at first | C.the professor will go back to teach this summer | D.the professor often feels sorry for himself | 小题5:According to the last paragraph, what did the author learn?A.One should remain optimistic all the time. | B.It is important to let people know about their importance. | C.Teachers should have a positive influence on their students. | D.It is never too late to make a right decision. |
