On a cold winter day, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the author of The Success Principles, who was going to deliver a speech on his new book.
During his talk, Jack 36 his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, ‘‘Who wants this?” 37 shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would 38 . But I jumped up, ran up the 39 to the stage, and grabbed the bill. As I was launching myself in the air, 40 raced through my mind — was I about to be humiliated(羞辱) in front of 800 people? Would they 41 security guards and take me from the stage? 42 my desire for bold (大胆的)action was louder than any 43 voice. As I got the bill from his hand, he said, “That’s it! We can’t wait for the 44 to come to us. We must take 45 to create what we want!’’
After his talk, I 46 to formally meet Jack and boldly asked for his personal e-mail address. Over the next months, I sent him emails 47 my points of view and dreams with him. He kindly e-mailed back lots of encouragement. But my life got busy 48 other things. I stopped e-mailing Jack.
A year later, my dreams had worn away. I thought Jack would inspire me into action, like a giant arrow that would show me the way.
I e-mailed him, and then again — but got no 49 . As I sat down at my computer to 50 my e-mails, I 51 woke up. What was I doing? I was waiting! Now I remembered the crowd, most likely 52 that hundred-dollar bill, while they sat glued to their chairs.
Usually we all have a “Jack” for whom we wait — whether it’s a person, a place or a thing. We 53 believe the gifts of life are just around the corner, and that everything will come in a(n) 54 way. So we don’t try. We 55 . But as Wayne Gretzky said,“You’ll always miss 100% of the opportunities you don’t take!” So I stopped waiting and started my writing career.
Now what are you waiting for?

举一反三
Wishing to encourage her young son to make more progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually found his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.” When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.
Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. To her horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
At that moment, the great pianist made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy’s ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.” Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a melody. Together, the old master and the young beginner transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was amazed and, as it finished, they cheered.
That’s the way it is in life. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren’t exactly graceful flowing music. But when we put our trust in the hands of a Greater Power, our life’s work can be truly beautiful. Next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, “Don’t quit, and keep playing.”

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as a result or product that can easily be identified (识别) and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected obstacles (障碍). In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is extremely important to our ability to grow. Do we notice ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity (无把握) and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
小题1:Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?

Quit while you"re ahead
I am one of those people who are terrible at saying no.I take on too many projects at once, and spend too much of my time doing things I"d rather not be doing.I get work done, but it"s not always the best I can do, or the best way I could spend my time.
That"s why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter.
Being a quitter isn"t being someone who gives up, who doesn"t see important things through to the end.I aspire (渴望) to be the opposite of that. The quitter I want to be is someone who gets out when there"s no value in what he"s doing, or when that value comes at the expense of something more important.
A friend of mine once told me, "I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it." Strange though it sounds, we all tend to do this.We get involved in something, realize we don"t want to be a part of it, but keep on going. We say "Well, I"ve already invested so much time in this, I might as well stick it out."
I propose the opposite: quit as often as possible, regardless of project status or time invested. If you"re reading a book, and don"t like it, stop reading.Cut your losses, realize that the smartest thing to do is to stop before your losses grow even more, and quit.Instead of reading an entire book you hate, read half of a bad one and half of a good one.Isn"t that a better use of your time?
Step back for a second.Let"s learn how to say "no" at the beginning, or in the middle, and free up more of our time to do the things we"d like to be doing, and the things actually worth doing. Saying no is hard, and admitting a mistaken yes is even harder. If we do both, we"ll start to make sure that we"re spending our time creating value, rather than increasing our losses.Let"s be quitters together.
小题1:The author wants to be a quitter, because he _____.
A.hopes to improve his personality |
B.wishes to have more time for relaxation |
C.expects to make more efficient use of his time |

A.When you feel tired and need a rest. |
B.When you know a task cannot be finished. |
C.When you meet with difficulties along the way in your life. |
D.When you realize what you are doing is not worth the time. |
A.you are wise to cut your losses |
B.it"s a pity that you have wasted so much time |
C.you should finish a book that you have started |
D.you should regret choosing the wrong book |
A.learn to say no |
B.live your life to the fullest |
C.create more value |
D.stop doing many things at once |
When I learned that my 71-year-old mother was playing Scrabble—a word game—against herself, I knew I had to do something. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against. I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 15 years to persuade her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and delivered it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure in the world of computers.
It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’ve taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She has been the one teaching me all my life; to cook and sew; to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back.
It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing(文字处理). This proved to be a bigger challenge(挑战) to her, so I gave her some homework. I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces.
“Are you demanding this with your kindergarten pupils?” she said.
“No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.”
My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy(过敏反应). For as long as I remember, and time I called, my mother would answer, Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years.
小题1:What does the author do?
A.She is a cook. |
B.She is a teacher. |
C.She is a housewife |
D.She is a computer engineer. |
A.to let her have more chances to write letters |
B.to support her in doing her homework |
C.to help her through the bad times |
D.to make her life more enjoyable |
A.because her mother had stopped using the telephone |
B.because she wanted to keep in touch with her mother |
C.so that her mother could practice what she had learned |
D.so that her mother could be free from housework |
A.lost interest in cooking |
B.took more phone calls |
C.played more games |
D.began to use it |
