The students at Sandy’s high school were badly shaken by the news that a classmate had 36 himself. The suicide note read: “It’s hard to 37 when nobody cares if you die.” Glen, a teacher, realized this was a 38 moment about the importance of making people feel 39 . He asked his class to imagine they were about to 40 and to write a note “telling someone how and why you 41 him or her.” Sandy, who had a 42 relationship with her mother, decided to write her 43 . Her letter read: “We’ve had some 44 times and I haven’t always been a very good 45 ,but I know I’m lucky to have you in my life. You’re the 46 person I’ve ever known, And even when I disagree with you, I never 47 you love me and want what’s best for me. Thanks for not 48 up on me”. When her mom read the note, she cried and hugged Sandy 49 but said little. The next morning, Sandy found a 50 on her mirror: “Dearest Sandy, I want you to know being your mother is ,by far, the most important thing in my life. 51 I got your note, I thought I had lost your love and 52 . I felt like such a failure. I intended to 53 it all last night. Your note saved my 54 .” Be careful not to underestimate the 55 of expressed appreciation. There was a time when I thought my dad didn’t know a thing about being a good father. I couldn’t 31 him ever saying the words “I love you.” It seems to me his only purpose in life was to say “__32_ ” to anywhere I wanted to go and anything I wanted to do, including getting a 33 . Some parents bought their kids cars when they got their driver’s licenses. Not my dad ---- he said that I’d have to get a job and buy my own. So that is what I did. I got a job at a very nice restaurant and 34 every penny I could and 35 I had enough to buy my car, I did! The day I brought that car home, my dad was the first one I wanted to 36 to. “Look, dad, a car of my own. If you ever want a ride, I’ll only 37 you five dollars.” I offered with a smile. “I see,” was all he said. One day, there was something wrong with my father’s truck. So he needed a 38 to work. . The sun wasn’t even up when we left the house, 39 it was already getting warm out. It was going to be a(n) 40 day. As I dropped my dad off, I 41 him, dressed in his work clothes, getting his 42 from the trunk of my car. Watching his sun-weathered face, and even from a distance I could tell there were 43 lines than I ever remembered being there before. I realized how hard my dad works for the family. My father is a cement finisher. In that instant, it 44 to me that he actually got down on his hands and knees to sweat over hot concrete to make a living for his family. And he did this day in and day out, 45 hot it got. Never, not once, had I heard him 46 about it. To him we were “worth” it. And never once did he “charge” us for it. When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to 47 me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s my 48. Don’t work too hard. I love you.” His 49 met mine, then glanced away in the direction of his waiting tools, he 50 his throat and said, “Oh, and… me, too.”

Recently, I experienced a wonderful lesson that little things still mean a lot. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii. About a month ago, when I started my car and I 1 down at the roadside, a piece of paper caught my eye. I picked it up and 2 it carefully. The form turned out to be a 3 from the State Motor Vehicle Division, documenting the owners’ 4 of their vehicle’s registration fees. Quickly, I put myself in their 5 and figured:no one would throw this out, 6 if it was current. Although the form had been blown here, where in the busy, 7 parking lot would I find the owner? So I checked the date and noted the name of the 8 , who must be in our town. I thought that the best and easiest step to 9 was to put the form in an envelope addressed to the couple and 10 it by post. So I did it. On the weekend, a 11 couple called at my house and brought me a big 12 . They said they had panicked and searched for the receipt(收据) 13 everywhere before giving up. Without it they would 14 $8, 000. It felt great to know I’d helped someone 15 a major trouble by doing something which at first glance seemed minor.

Dash of Hope “Dash” is a symbol which represents every day we’ve spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your “dash” is important. Recently I 36 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by 37 , nor happenstance(意外事件), that she had been named “Hope”. The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity 38 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. 39 I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special. Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was 40 a “wish” in early December 2010 by the “Make-A-Wish” Foundation after being 41 that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 42 in her area were waiting for their wishes to be achieved , she unselfishly used her wish to 43 that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked that it be done 44 January 16, 2011. Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her 45 request could not be granted as the funds were simply 46 . They calculated that they would need to raise more than one 47 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring 49 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 50 as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 51 the story of this caring young girl who had 52 the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in 53 money to help make Hope’s dream come true. Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only 54 , but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, “A Celebration of Hope” on January 16, 2011 , the 55 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!
