populations have the biggest problem of dirty air. Air pollution is caused by many different things. A major source of air pollution is the gas fumes from cars. Statistics show that 93 percent of all auto trips are
within cities. Another major source of dirty air is the burning of coal and oil for energy. This energy is needed to make electricity. Of course, much more electricity is used in the city than in the country.
On the average, we throw away more trash and garbage than the year before. The burning of garbage
contributes to air pollution. Many major industries are also responsible for the dirty air in the around cities. The fumes from iron, steel, chemical, and petroleum (石油) production add particles to the air.
The effects of air pollution range from mild headaches to death. The levels of pollution found in heavy
for traffic may cause headaches for loss of clear vision. Wherever coal and oil are used for fuel, fumes
may kill trees and plants and cause metal to corrode. In some of the larger cities, these fumes endanger
the live of human beings by contributing to lung diseases and causing early death.

usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest,it"s hard not
to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. "Most of the
infections we think of as human infections started in other animals," says Stephen Morse, director of the
Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University.
It"s not just that we"re going to where the animals are; we"re also bringing them closer to us. Popular
foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen"s pets, and
she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. "I don"t think it"s fair to have them as pets when
we have such a limited knowledge of them," says Isaksen.
""Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need
changing," says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected
animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may
be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful. Monkey-pox doesn"t look a major infectious
disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.

C. enjoy being with children
D. suffer from monkey-pox
B. We need to study native animals.

Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood
pressurelowering drugs.
The researchers, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact
with stomach enzymes (酶) they produce a protein that acts in the same way as ACE inhibitors, drugs
taken by millions around the world to lower blood pressure. Fried eggs proved particularly effective, but
more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.
Earlier this month, British researchers declared that, contrary to popular beliefs, it is healthy to go to
work on an egg. They concluded that the type of cholesterol (胆固醇) found in eggs has little effect on
increasing heart disease risks.
Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin, from the University of Surrey, said, "The wrong beliefs linking
egg eating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected. The amount of fat in our diet
has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amount of
cholesterol found in eggs. The UK public do not need to limit the number of eggs they eat. They can be
encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature"s most nutritious foods."
The British Heart Foundation dropped its threeeggaweek limit in 2005.However,almost half of
Britons believe the limit still applies.
B. a kind of protein
C .a kind of illness
D. a kind of food
B. have no effect on blood cholesterol
C. can be included in a healthy diet
D. are forbidden to be eaten in the UK
B. stomach enzymes mixed with eggs can cure heart diseases
C. most Britons agree the threeeggaweek limit should be dropped
D. about 50% of Britons think eating an egg a day is bad for their health
B. to introduce a medicine made from eggs
C. to tell people how to lower their blood pressure
D. to advise people to eat as many eggs as possible
People who may not drive every day but still want a car to run errands (差事) or drive on weekends
benefit most from car sharing. Car sharing is usually run by a service like Zipcar, though there are
nonprofit (非营利的) and informal car sharing services. Members pay a monthly fee and have access to
an entire fleet (队)of cars when they need one. The cars are parked in fixed spots around the city, so
members only need to make a reservation (预订), and then go to the pickup spot.
Car sharing has major environmental benefits because it reduces the number of cars on the road.
Members don"t drive just because they are in a car. They plan trips, and if they don"t need a car, they
don"t use one. Still, a car is available to them if they need to make a big trip to the grocery store, pick
someone up at the airport or if they want to go to the beach for the day. Members also benefit by having
access to a car without any of the headaches of ownership. They usually don"t have to pay for the gas,
insurance or maintenance (保养), and the monthly membership fee is less than a typical car payment. So
if you really want to go green but aren"t ready to totally give up a car yet, car sharing may be the way to
go.
If you still need to get around, but want to go even greener than sharing a car, share a bus!
B. has become the best way to cut living costs
C. is becoming more and more popular in cities
D. is becoming popular both in urban and rural areas
B. Zipcar, different from other services, is aimed at green driving with no profit
C. Zipcar is a company supplying car sharing services for a monthly payment
D. Zipcar is a company providing formal car sharing free
B. why car sharing benefits the environment
C. why car sharing is cheaper than owning a car
D. why a car is available to members
B. Car sharing can save you the headaches of ownership.
C. Bus sharing is even greener than car sharing.
D. Zipcar is the largest company offering car sharing services.
The most widespread fallacy (谬误) of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are
caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or
indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the
Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have
reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside
world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.
During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches (战壕), cold and wet,
showed no increased tendency to catch colds.
In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp (奥斯维辛集中营), naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.
At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they
gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in
drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.
If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most painstaking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by
scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more on cold weather than at other times, and this
makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.
No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors (止痛片) such as
aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms.
B. 5
C. 6
D. 3
B. Colds are not caused by cold.
C. People suffer from colds just because they like to stay indoors.
D. A person may catch a cold by touching someone who already has one.
B. they are writing reports in terribly cold weather
C. they are free from work in the isolated arctic regions
D. they are coming into touch again with the outside world
B. never caught colds
C. often caught colds
D. became very strong
B. the fallacy about the common cold
C. the reason and the way people catch colds
D. the continued spread of common colds
is important to remember that body needs proper care in order to
be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay
in good shape: eat right food, get enough sleep, and exercise
regularly.
Proper nutrition is important for good health. Your body
cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind of "fuel".
Don"t eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of
foods high in protein, like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables
and fruits are very important because they provide necessary
vitamins and minerals. However, don"t overeat. It is not helpful to
be overweight.
Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you
don"t get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You
have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep
may even result in a change of personality (个性). Be sure to
allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you
do,your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be
sharp.
Fmally ,get plenty of exercise. Exercise makes the body strong
and prevents you from putting on weight. It also improves your
heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will
probably increase your life-span (寿命) . Any kind of exercise is
good. Most sports are very good for keeping the body in good
shape: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on, are
good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are
enjoyable and interesting too.
If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep
and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier
place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.
B. why health is important for us
C. nutrition is important for health
D. sleep is more important than nutrition and exercise
B. one needs a large amount of fat
C. people should eat according to the foods" nutrition
D. we must try to sleep now and then
B. are not good for you
C. get you more energy
D. will keep your personality
B. How Vitamins Work in Man"s Body
C. How to Stay Healthy
D. Sleeping Well
