In 1963,former Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. Nelson knew that our world
was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying. He wondered why most people
weren"t trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided
that the President would go around the country and tell people about these problems. He did, but still not
enough people were working on it.
Then in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone
about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a
special article in Scholastic Magazine to tell them about the special day he had planned.
On April 22,1970, the first Earth Day meeting was held. People all over the country made promises to
help improve the environment. Since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the
world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet

cook it instantly by putting the noodles into the boiling water and add in those MSG(味精) packets(小包), together with your other food like eggs or vegetables. However, have you ever wondered whether this is
the correct way of cooking it? When you first took out the noodles from the packaging, you will notice that the noodles are joined together nicely as a piece. In order to make the noodles joined together nicely side by side it needs some form of wax coating (石蜡涂层) in order to show an attractive instant noodles in
front of us. Many people who enjoy eating instant noodles frequently do not really think too much of it as it seems very normal to everyone to have it nicely shown in front of us. However, researches have shown
that the layer (层) of wax coating on the noodles is quite harmful to our body and we should not eat it too
frequently. It is advisable to have a break of 2-3 days before we start to eat another packet of instant
noodles as our body need about 3 days to clear that layer of wax coating away from our body system. Do you know the danger of having too much wax coating stored in our stomach? It will lead to CANCER if it
is stored in our body system for a long period of time.
There are 2 key points to take note while preparing instant noodles:
1) Wash the instant noodles with warm water first, stir(搅和) it and pour away the water containing the wax coating.
2) Repeat Step 1 and try to stir the noodles again to wash away the wax coating on the noodles before cooking it in a new pot of water.
Hope this article will let more people have self-awareness of the hidden danger of instant noodles and
thus eat safely and stay healthy.

When I was in my 20s , my life was full of fun. At that time , my aim was studying and trying to make
out what I would do when I got to my 30s . In my 30s, life became a challenge(挑战). I had to prove to

Your body, which has close relations with the food you eat, is the most important thing you own, so
it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment (营养).The old saying "An apple a day keeps the
doctor away"is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and vegetables because they
contain vitamin C. Many people take extra vitamins in pill form, believing that these will make them
healthy.
But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The body
doesn"t need or use extra vitamins, so why waste money on them?
In the modern western world, many people are too busy to bother about eating properly. They throw
anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illnesses caused or made worse
by bad eating habits is frightening,

problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man"s release of completely new and often
artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural
substance , such as oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and
use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the
environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste
products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new
and complex goods are produce there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for
example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see
pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of
industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in
connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more
on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually
becoming worn out as it is being used in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizer cannot
restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could
be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the
home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or
four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles
or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste
of resources, in term of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by
persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away
much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to
solve by cutting out unnecessary buying ,excess consumption and careless disposal of the
products we use in our daily lives.
B. exposed
C. disapproved of
D. collected
B. the harder pollution can be prevented
C. the more pollution there will be
D. the more easily pollution can be controlled
B. The government is trying hard to stop pollution.
C. Individuals know how to get rid of the habit of littering everywhere.
D. We can"t stop buying unnecessary things.
B. making anti-pollution advertisements
C. cutting down the use of oil and other oil products
D. reducing unnecessary buying, over-consumption and careless disposal of wastes
surroundings, many Australians are turning caring for the environment into a way of life.
Julie Astonis, an Australian housewife in Brisbane is one such example. Even though autumn is
approaching Australia"s Brisbane in April, one can still watch colorful blooming (盛开的) flowers in
Julie"s little garden, as she tells that in her community, "Each of us has a beautiful yard. The whole
community, from children to elderly people, takes care of the environment as if they are taking care of their own garden."
"Gardening is the most popular club in our community," she says. "A lot of retired people don"t just
regularly organize gardening lectures, but also personally visit families in the community to provide
gardening training. So you can see that flowers continue to blossom in our gardens throughout the year."
Talking about her people"s sense of caring for the environment, Julie says when people in the
community take along their dog, they always carry a garbage bag to deal with the dog"s waste. "In our
community, you will never experience the embarrassment of stepping on the dirty waste while you are
walking on the grass," says Julie with a smile."Taking care of the the dog"s waste can also help to develop
children"s sense of responsibility!"
As to protecting water resources, the Australian goverment has made strict rules for families. Julie says, "We certainly would not use tap water to water the flowers!"She says almost every family in her
community has a huge tank used to store rainwater, which is later used as the resource of all outdoor water use, including car washing and watering the garden. This year, they also asked people to connect the water tank with their toilets.
B. April is a great time for people to enjoy flowers
C. it"s not easy to keep a garden without proper training
D. Julie"s community has a deep sense of caring for nature
B. Families are taught how to take care of their gardens.
C. The local government provides free gardening training.
D. There is enough rainwater to water the flowers regularly.
