阅读下面短文,请根据短文的要求答题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)      In the United States, friends can be close, constant, intense, generous, and real, yet fade away in a shorttime
if circumstances change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christ- mas greetings for a year or
two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years
later, they pick up the friendship where it left out and are de- lighted.
In the United States, you can feel free to visit people"s homes, share their holidays, enjoy their lives without
fear that you are tak ing on a lastinS obligation (负担). Do not hesitate to accept hospi tality (热情款待) because you can"t give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans
will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospi tality easily.
Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full, warm and re al. Most visitors find themselves readily
invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain (招待) at home,
offering what is felt as only home-cooked food, not " doing something for your guest". It is felt that restaurant
entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, out- siders are not invited into homes.
In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to
one"s home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess___,
do not feel that you are being shown inferior (差的,低级的 ) treatment.
Don"t feel neglected (被轻视的) if you do not find flowers a- waiting you in your hotel room, either.
Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled
(取消)-so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward
signsvary in different lands, the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real. 1. What"s the best title of the text? ( Please answer within 5 words. )

阅读理解。     The idea of getting fresh water from icebergs that are pulled to populated areas and dry areas of the world
was once treated as a joke more fit for cartoons than real life. But now it is being consid ered quite seriously
by many nations, especially since scientists have warned that the human race will outgrow its fresh water
supply faster than it runs out of food.
Glaciers (冰川) are a possible source of fresh water that has been overlooked until recently.
Three-quarters of the Earth"s fresh water supply is still tied up in glacial ice, a reservoir of untapped fresh
water so huge that it could carry on all the rivers of the world for 1,000 years.
Floating on the oceans every year are 7,659 trillion metric tons ofice covered in 10,000 icebergs that break
away from the polar ice caps, more than ninety percent of them from Antarctica.
Huge glaciers that widen over the shallow continental shelf give birth to icebergs throughout the year.
Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is formed when the sea itself freezes, rather, they are formed entirely on
land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they flow away from the polar region, icebergs
sometimes move mysteriously in a direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because they
melt more slowly than smaller pieces office, icebergs have been known to drift as far north as 35 degrees
south of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean. To hold them and guide them to parts of the world where they are
needed would not be too difficult.
The difficulty appears in other technical matters, such as the prevention of rapid melting in warmer
climates and the guiding of fresh water to shore in great volume. But even if the icebergs lost half of their
volume in drawing, the water they could provide would be far cheaper than that produced by removing salt
from water. 1. Why more countries consider getting fresh water from icebergs now? A. The population across the world changes too often.
B. The huge glaciers bring too many floods recently.
C. The warning from scientists and the serious situation.
D. There are too many icebergs waiting for being dealt with. 2. The underlined word "overlooked" in Paragraph 2 should mean _____.A. having a careful look
B. succeeding in passing
C. taking seriously
D. failing to notice3. What makes getting fresh water from icebergs difficult? A. The high cost and fewer glaciers.
B. Climate changes and practical actions.
C. The slow moving speed of the icebergs.
D. The time of waiting the icebergs" melting. 4. What is the best title for the passage? A. lcebergs Cause Global Warming
B. Get Fresh Water From Icebergs
C. Solve the Problem of Water Shortage
D. Look for a Better Way to Get Water

new book written by a group of Chinese authors.
China Is Not Happy was published in March,2009.It is a fol low-up to the 1996 work China Can Say No,
a bestseller that complained about the influence of the West and the US in particular, on China. Thirteen years
later, the authors of China Is Not. Happy list their dissatisfaction with how China is being treated in the world
today.
They argue that China needs to use its growing power and eco nomic resources to build its own position
of preeminence (卓越). "From looking at the history of human civilization, we are most qualified to lead this
world." the book says.
The authors single out the US for special scorn (轻蔑)."The economic problem has shown the Chinese
people that America does have problems, that what we"ve been saying is right," said one of the authors.
The book has become a bestseller in many Chinese bookstores. Yet much of the response to the book has
been negative. Several re- views in the Chinese media have criticized the book"s radical (激进的) opinions. The
book is a way to" fish money from the pockets of the angry youth and angry elderly," wrote one critic in the
China Youth Daily. Meanwhile, a well-known sociologist, Li Yinhe, has said that China needs patriotism (爱国
主义),but there is a limit.

1. Anna: I get really frustrated easily, and sometimes I end up yell ing at people I love. I"m not very sure
why it happens, but I have no control over it. How can I stop?
     2. Smith:Some kids are making fun of me because I"m doing very well at school. Isn"t that something to
be proud of? I need advice.
     3. Wilkins: I am not sociable. I am really shy, and I am already a freshman in high school. I have some
new friends, but I am still shy to the cool kids. Can you help me, please?
     4. Crick: I always say what I feel immediately and without thinking. Sometimes I get in trouble for it or
feel sorry about it later. Is speaking your mind a good or a bad thing?
     5. June: I love to read! But I don"t have any time to read because of all of my activities. I don"t want to
quit anything. What should I do? A
Instead of feeling upset, you should definitely be proud of your- self. Intelligence is a quality that everyone
wants, and as you get ol- der it"s going to be what people love and respect about you. Still water runs deep.
I"m sure as time goes by, some of those kids making fun of you might realize how cool you actually are.
B
Everyone has to learn how to adapt to society and mix socially with others. No man is an island, as the
saying goes. To become a so- ciable person, you must be naturally friendly. Besides, do something for a social
situation. A teacher once gave me this great advice: Pre parea conversation in your head before going into an
uncomfortable social situation. It sounds like a lot of work, but it"s easy and it works! Get involved in activities
that interest you and you will make new friends fast.
C
Always keep a book with you so that you can read during pock- ets of free time. Turn some of your TV
or computer time into reading time. Read for a little while right before bed, and find time to read on weekends.
Also, talk to your parents about your schedule. You might not want to quit anything, but you might need to
find more free time in order to have a happy balance in your life.
D
That feeling is your conscience, and it"s telling you that you need to confess what you did. Be brave and
tell your parents. Even if they get upset when they hear about it from you, they would be even more upset to
hear about it from your friend"s mom. So pick a quiet time and say. Mom, Dad, I need to tell you something,
but I"m a fraid. Then spill the beans. No matter what they say, you"ll be re lieved not to have this secret any
more.
E
First, identify what is frustrating you, then learn to calm your- self down. The next time you start feeling
frustrated, stop what you"re doing and breathe deeply. Count to ten. Get up and walk around. Clear your
mind before you come back to the frustrating task. If you keep a cool head, you"ll be less likely to snap at
others. And if you do yell at someone, apologize and admit that it"s not that person"s fault. Then calm down
and try again.
F
Speaking your mind can be a really good thing. Far too many people don"t, except when talking about
someone behind that person"s back. However, there are times when honesty does more than good like when
a girl asks if she looks fat. So in situations in which there"s no real good, you are better off keeping your
thoughts to yourself. In situations in which that is not the case like when your brother asks if his breath stinks
feel free to tell the truth. Just be prepared to take it in return.

impressive effect." But I can tell you, only a small part of that I percent are telling the truth."
I"ve met colorful people like Wang all over China. They are cynical (玩世不恭的 ) yet warmhearted, plain
spoken but smart. And many of them are confined (局限于) to work in factories.
Wang is a top technician but also represents manual factory workers, who are China"s most important
natural resource. Their en- ergy is powering China"s economic boom, and their muscle is turning the wheel of
the world"s factory.
But does their unskilled labor give their life meaning? At school, did they tell their friends:" When I grow up
I want to work in a factory making socks?" Did you?
Factory work has always been a stepping-stone from farm life to the city and a modern life. It"s been
happening for centuries, but today, with our space-age technology, it"s outdated. Earning 1,200 yuan,( $169)
per month working in a factory is better than that on a farm, but as Wang points out, it"s not a dream career.
There should be better ways to earn your rice.
Many modern factories no longer have production line workers. Robots do the assembly (装配). People
just do the monitoring. In this age of technology, in which China is now working smarter and not just harder,
why are people still standing in production lines?
But life is cheap in China. So why not continue to make use of the low-cost labor situation and keep the
economy growing fast, some entrepreneurs may ask.
But have these businessmen ever labored in a factory? 1. How many people surveyed really like to be factory workers? A. One percent.
B. Only a small part.
C. Only a small part of that one percent.
D. The writer didn"t mention it. 2. Which is NOT the writer"s opinion of factory workers? A. Cynical.
B. Unimportant.
C. Warmhearted.
D. Plain spoken. 3. The writer uses _____ to begin the passage. A. a lot of figures
B. many examples
C. some dialogue
D. the result of a survey
