together, according to a book by Dr. Leonard Zunin. "Every time you meet someone in a social situation,
give him your undivided attention for four minutes. A lot of people"s whole lives would change if they did
just that."
When we are introduced to new people, we should try to appear friendly and self-confident. In general,
he says, "People like people who like themselves." On the other hand, we should not make the other person
think we are too sure of ourselves.
Hearing such advice, one might say, "But I"m not a friendly, self-confident person. That"s not my nature.
It would be dishonest for me to act that way." In reply, Dr. Zunin would claim that a little practice can help
us feel comfortable about changing our social habits. We can become accustomed to any changes we choose
to make in our personality. "It"s like getting used to a new car. It may be unfamiliar at first, but it goes much
better than the old one."
But isn"t it dishonest to give the appearance of friendly self-confidence when we don"t actually feel that
way? Perhaps, but according to Dr. Zunin, "total honesty" is not always good for social relationships,
especially during the first few minutes of contact. There is a time for everything, and a certain amount of
play-acting may be best for the first few minutes of contact with a stranger. That is not the time to complain
about one"s health or to mention faults one finds in other people. It is not the time to tell the whole truth about
one"s opinions and impressions.
The author also declares that interpersonal relations should be taught as a required course in every school,
along with reading, writing, and mathematics. In his opinion, success in life depends mainly on how we get
along with other people. That is at least as important as how much we know.

C. appear friendly and self-confident at least for the first few minutes
D. mention faults we find in the other people
B. are more important than other courses in school
C. are less important than reading, writing and mathematics

举一反三
I am 44 years old and never married. I have always wanted to find that perfect someone that I dream
about. For about the last five years I have almost given up the hope of ever finding the one I truly wish to
spend the rest of my life with.
I have always tried to be a nice guy. I had found your website some four or five months before. I did
not know what to expect. I don"t know how to speak Chinese and never thought truly of how I was to an
Asian woman.
Well, I had a lot of replies from some very nice and pretty women. I had a hard time finding only a couple
to write to. But one stood out from the rest. She was cute, nice and seemed to hold a lot of the same values
as I do. In a short time I had decided to write only to her. We communicated via emails 2-3 times a day and
phone calls once or twice a week.
I went and met her and her family only a week ago. Her name is Ying and she lives in Nanning. I found
Nanning to be one of the most beautiful cities I had ever been to. We had even decided to marry and to bring
her to the USA under the fiancée visa. Not only did she meet everything I had ever hoped to find in someone
else but turned out to be what every woman should be like, at least the ones I have met. We plan to marry as
soon as she is here and start a family together as neither of us has children but we both want them.
So to anyone out there reading this, I can only say this: You may not find what you are looking for if
you"re not honest with your partner and yourself. This site worked for me mostly because I was honest with
something that I wanted in someone else. When I did find her, love can work even across the other side of
the world, between language differences and cultural differences. I wish you all luck in finding your perfect
match. I have finally found mine and wish to give all my thanks to those at Chinese love links to help make it
happen.
Sincerely yours,
Arthur

To the average American, pumpkin pie is a tasty and wonderful dish(一道菜). You couldn"t have
Thanksgiving without it.
For me, however, the smell of pumpkin pie baking in the oven brings other special feelings. My father was
in the army, so I moved house constantly as a child. I had no hometown. Before I could go to school or make
friends in one town, I"d be setting in another.
There were so few things around me to give a feeling of home. When you"re young, you don"t know the
difference-you think moving is normal. It"s only a long time later when you learn that most people have a
hometown they can return to and friends they"ve always known, but you don"t. pumpkin pie was the one thing
that was always there and that"s why it"s special to me.
Another reason I like it is that I was born on Halloween, October 31. Every time my birthday came around, we made a giant pumpkin lantern. And why give a kid a cake when there was all that pumpkin to use in a pie?
My mom put on her apron (围裙), and before long, pumpkin pie was the centerpiece of the party.
Now, I can"t help but feel good about life whenever I eat pumpkin pie. To me pumpkin pie is home.

Shawn Levy tries to do this on film in the recently released (发行) Night at the Museum.
The film is adapted from Milan Trenc"s book of the same name. It brings to life a world where dinosaurs
wander the earth, a former president rides again, warlike early Asians return, and cowboys and Roman soldiers
seek to bring back their old goals.
The familiar comedy star Ben Stiller acts as a luckless dreamer named Larry Daley. He takes a position(职
位) as night watchman at the New York Museum of Natural History.
On Larry"s first night, he"s left alone by the three aging guards he"s replacing. They fail to inform him of
the museum"s rather unusual nightlife.
Soon Larry finds himself chased(追逐) down the hallways by the very lively skeleton(骨架, 骷髅) of a
dinosaur, in the middle of a confrontation(交锋) with Asian warriors. He is caught in a battle between a
cowboy and a Roman general and meets face-to-face with former US president Teddy Roosevelt, played by
Robin Williams.
They are each from an exhibit that has come to life through the magic of a priceless Egyptian tablet(药
片).
While the film fails to develop very much in some areas (for example, Larry"s troubled relationship with a
son), it does have enough special effects, and jokes to amuse the audience.
Bottom Line: Definitely not Oscar-worthy, but a great way to relax during a holiday.

just happen to start writing aimlessly. However, there is more to these"diagrams (图形) of the unconscious"
than what you see. Free from the restriction (限制, 约束) of the conscious mind, they can be useful in finding
your character and personality, and many of your secret hopes, ambitions, fears, and dreams.
Faces are a sign of sociability or lack of it. If you doodle happy, smiling faces, you have a friendly,
out-going disposition which people respond to, and you enjoy an active social life. If your faces are bad, this
may mean hating others. Faces looking to the right are sign of outgoing personality and confident expectation
about the future while to the left, a sign of shyness and self-control.
Bare or narrow trees show a lack of warmth. You"ve probably been disappointed in life or could even be
suffering from a minor illness that needs attention.
If you build a house in layer(层), each layer separate, you could be too proud, too eager to make your loved
ones follow your order and jump to attention. A little untidiness in a house makes the people feel comfortable,
safe and happy.
If your doodle looks like a web, you are making a cry for help in solving a problem. You feel trapped, and
are seeking a way out; perhaps you even want to travel, try out new ideas and realize your ambitions. But you
lack confidence to step out into the World on your own because of the web you"ve created around you.
B. a self-controlled person
C. a shy person
D. a lazy person
B. be out-going
C. dislike others
D. live a rich life
B. To draw carefully and attentively what one likes drawing
C. To write different things without certain limits
D. To write at home, mainly on the wall
B. Recognize yourself with the help of doodles
C. Doodling, an unpopular habit
D. Doodling may cause untidiness
shooting at spaceships from other planets and dropping bombs on strange monsters (恶魔).The machines
have names like Space Warrior, Dark Invader and so on. It used to be believed that damage was done only
to those strange visitors from outer space, but now it seems that they are striking back.
Many teenagers like electronic games so much that they can"t stop playing. They spend hours tightly
holding the joystick controls and constantly pressing buttons marked"fire". They develop pains on their
fingers because of the constant pressure. They play and play so that the pains have no chance to cure
properly. The rapid wrist movement required to guide the spaceship across the screen causes another
problem: The muscles of the wrist and arm become so inflamed and swollen (红肿) that they press against
the bones. This condition is what doctors now call "Space Warrior"s Wrist". Other strange aches and pains
also are likely to affect the elbows and shoulders.
Another even more alarming problem is shown by the case of a 17-year-old girl which was recently in
the British Medical Journal. She had been playing various kinds of electronic games for more than two hours
a day. Her father repaired games and machines and she could use the cassettes and systems in his workshop
as often as she liked. One day, after playing a game called Dark Invader, she lost consciousness (晕倒) and
fell to the floor.
Doctors who examined her found she was suffering from an unusual illness caused by lights flashing at
a particular frequency.
B. students studying in high schools

B. exciting but harmful to the health and study
C. interesting but harmless to the eyes
D. amusing and satisfying
