is increasing by five percent a year. Urban noise is doubling every ten years. By air, land and sea, we are
facing an onslaught of noise that is threatening our ability to live in this world. We have granted ourselves
the right to make noise. But what about our responsibilities? Have we developed a sense of acoustic
responsibility?
The evidence suggests that we have not. Many people seem to believe they have an unlimited right to
make noise with cars and motorbikes, and with loud music at home and in the street. In some countries
measures have been taken to force people to make less noise. In Britain, for example, a law has been
passed preventing people from disturbing their neighbors with music at night.
It is widely accepted that we should deal with our rubbish in a responsible way. Noise is in reality a
particularly insidious form of rubbish. It destroys community life, pursues us into our homes, keeps us
from sleeping and is the cause of many stress-related illnesses, as well as hearing loss. Our acoustic
environment belongs to all of us. Everyone has the right to use it, but no one has the right to abuse it.
Let"s start using it responsibly.
B. pollution
C. sound
D. rubbish
B. British law protects people from their neighbors" music at night.
C. The level of noise produced in cities is twice as high now as ten years ago.
D. Noise can sometimes cause hearing loss.
B. call for people to make less noise
C. compare rubbish and noise
D. describe people"s attitude to noise

To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A Week ago, "Sports for Life" programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport
they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for
more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones:
Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised
to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To
cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball
courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter"s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is
not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has a lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students
must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor
aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on
duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking. (远足)
Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later.
Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15
hikers. Each instructor will cost $ 75/hr.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the
pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour
(i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have
two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

That"s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept.
Could this be true ? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for
sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he
made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never
saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers.
The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They found only one answer that
might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several
days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure. Herpin died
at the age of 94.

Internet, which are great ways. However, job fairs (招聘会) may open up more doors for you and allow
you to build a sound future career(事业).
A job fair allows many companies from your area, as well as other areas to gather together to recruit
suitable people to help the development of their business. These companies typically attend the job fairs
to accept new people into their team.
Take Cumberland in Maryland as an example, the job fair is held at the Holiday Inn"s large
meetingroom, which is next to the main hall. Dates change but the event lasts from 8 am until 6 pm throughout the whole week. The job fair is usually held several times every year; dates can be found in the
Cumberland Times News or on the newspaper"s website. Also, information about the companies that will be attending, is offered, along with these companies" web addresses for you, so that you can make more
preparations based on the needs of the companies you are interested in.
You must know that you can"t show all of your talents, skills and abilities on a resume (简历) alone, so
it"s important to leave a good and lasting impression in employers" minds in a very short time. So you must make sure that you have given your best to the employers. Get a handshake with all of the employers you
speak to and, introduce yourself clearly enough so that they will remember you in case you get an interview in the near future. Seldom, people are employed on these job fairs for the qualifications (资格证书) they
show.
You should take wi

In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where I want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast, but in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams(拥挤).Tokyo is not different from London, Paris and New York in that. It is different when one wants to walk.
At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London Oxford Street. But the streets near the Ginze in Tokyo always have a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them.
The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 at night. That is when the night-clubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35 000 night-clubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty.
During the day, most people travel to and from work by train. Tokyo people buy six million train tickets every day. At most stations, trains arrive every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains. Although they are usually crowded, Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train you would see everybody reading a newspaper. In Tokyo trains everybody in a seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short.
In Tokyo, I stood outside the station for five minutes. Three fire-engines(消防车) race past on the way to one of the many fires that Tokyo has every day .Tokyo has so many surprises that none of them can really surprise me now.
B. night clubs are sometimes empty
C. there are more traffic jams
D. it is more difficult to go somewhere on foot
C. are the main means people use to travel to and from work
D. all of the above
B. On a Tokyo train
C. On a London train
D. At most Tokyo train stations
B. quite frequently
C. not very often
D. only several times a day
B. Fire-engines are very busy in the city
C. The streets become more crowded at 11:30 at night
D. Tokyo people are friendly
