Football is an extremely popular sport around most of the world. However, as the same with anything
that people feel over interested in, strong feelings sometimes get out of hand. English fans have been
known for quarreling endlessly and even fighting in the stands(看台). Several violent actions in a game
between Argentina and Chile in 1964 resulted in the death of 309 people. But up until now at least, there
has been only one football war.
The war took place between EL Salvador and Honduras, two Central American countries. The year
was 1969, and for many years the Salvador economy had been in a frightening condition: too many
people with too little land and too few jobs created a situation of terrible poverty. As a result, many poor
Salvador had been secretly crossing into Honduras looking for work, and later they formed a.strong sense that they were mistreated there. So unfriendly feelings were already very strong at the beginning of a
World Cup match between the two countries.
The first game of the three-game play-offs was held in Honduras, and the home team got a l:0 win in
the last minute of play. Fighting broke out afterward in the streets, and the stadium was set on fire. The
second game was played in EL Salvador, and the El Salvador team won. More violence and fire
followed. By the time the third game was played in Mexico City, one actual war appeared certain by all
means. And that is exactly what happened. Immediately after El Salvador"s close victory, armies began
marching along the border of the two countries. Then El Salvador attacked Honduras and bombed its
airport. The war was over in less than a week, but ill feelings between the two countries .

people buy as many as two or three different papers.
Why do people read newspapers?
Newspapers supply us with news about events in our hometowns, in our country and in other parts
of the world. Today we can read about important things that took place in foreign countries on the same
day they happened, even in countries far away. But hundreds of years ago, news of things took months
or even years to travel from one country to another. In those times, news was often passed from one
person to another andnever entirely true. Newspapers today supply us with more than just what
happened in our country or in other countries. If we want to know what the weather will be like, we
can read the weather reports. If we want to find out what films are being shown, or what plays or
concerts we can go to we can look in the newspapers.

families generally buy a newspaper every morning and two or three on Sundays.
Besides the national papers, there is, however, another branch of the British press which sells almost
as many copies. Local newspapers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Almost every town and
country area has one. Nearly all of them hold their own finance(财政) and many of them are very
profitable.
These papers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events-births, weddings,
deaths, council(议会) meetings and sports. Editors prefer to depend on people who know the district
well. A great deal of local. news is regularly supplied by clubs and churches in the neighborhood and it
does not get out of date as quickly as national news.
The editors must never forget that the success of any newspaper depends on advertising. They are
usually anxious to keep the good will of local businessmen for this reason. But if the newspaper is well
written and the news items have been carefully chosen to draw local readers, the businessmen are
grateful for the chance to keep their products in the public eyes.

newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest
events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You"ll even get to choose the kind
of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire
text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from
communication experts working on the newspaper of the future. Pictured as part of broader home based
on media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting,
offering news and analysis with video images of news events.
Most of the technology is available now. but convincing more people that they don"t need to read a
newspaper is the next step. Besides, resistance to computer newspaper may be stronger from within
journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of joumalists and
publishers will have to die off before the next generation realize that the newspaper industry is no longer
a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspaper unavoidable.
Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens.
It might take 30 t0 40 years to complete the change over because people need to buy computers and
because newspapers have established financial (财经的) interests in the paper industry.

means a lonely child. Many single-child parents feel a dilemma (进退两难) associated with their
decision to have only one child. There are no other children in the family for the child to associate with
(交往) , and this may lead to the child feeling lonely at times, especially during vacations.
Another common argument against having just one child is that an only child may be more spoiled
than one with brothers or sisters. Many people believe that a single child will not have leamed to
negotiate with others, and respect the give-and-take involved in many relationships. Some think this
may leave the child less able to interact(交往) well with people his or her own age than one who has
been raised with brothers or sisters.
However, for some single-child parents, particularly those with busy careers, the pressures of giving
time and energy to a second child can seem too great, resulting in them selecting to have no more children. For other parents, the financial burden of having a second child may be the prime consideration. Still
others believe that, , the parents can give, and the child can receive, more quality time and attention.
This often leads to increased self-respect which, combined with increased independence, can lead to the
child being more confident.
