makes really creates the unique atmosphere. At this summer’s World Cup, you can be sure that every
country’s fans will be in full voice, supporting their teams.
The football chant(口号) is as old as the sport itself. It’s a way for fans to express their support for
their team. It’s common for the noise of supporters to provide the encouragement for a team to win a
match. Most agree that a chant is for building a great atmosphere and to support the team.
One of the most famous football songs is the Liverpool club anthem(颂歌) You’ll Never Walk
Alone, originally from a 1945 Broadway show, which was adopted by Liverpool and is sung before
every match. It has been said that as soon as the opposite hears the song, they become aware of how
tough winning at Anfield (Liverpool’s stadium) will be.
The key to a good football song is that it should be simple. It has to be easy for all fans to sing along
with. When I went to watch Beijing Guo’an last season, I could join in one chant though I could only
speak a little Chinese. “Beijing wo ai ni,” the Guo’an fans sang - you didn’t have to be gifted to work out
what that meant.
At the World Cup, the first songs you’ll hear at matches will be the national anthems. Fans and
players join together to sing the anthems before each match, and it is considered a mark of respect that
the opposite remains silent while each team’s anthem is being sung.
So, even though I’ll be supporting England from home in the summer, you can be sure I’ll be chanting
at my TV: “En-ger-land, En-ger-land, En-ger-land!”
B. the football chant can express support to the team
C. the football chant appears later than football itself
D. a fan is talented to learn foreign languages
B. To fight with the opposition fans.
C. To provide encouragement with chants.
D. To donate money to the players.
B. Because it is sung for the leaders of the host country.
C. Because it represents encouragement from their fans.
D. Because either team senses the support from their country.
B. National Anthems at Matches
C. You’ll Never Walk Alone
D. You’ll Never “Cheer” Alone

first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is common that
parents hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and
states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too
early, and a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words
he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities,
he loses his natural enthusiasm(热情) for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in
money matters; others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality(准时) for meals. In
general, the controls imposed(强加的) represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community
(社区) as much as the child"s own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in
parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also,
parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practise what
they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old
enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents" principles and their morals can be a
dangerous disappointment.
B. is universal among parents
C. sets up dangerous states of worry in the child
D. will make him lose interest in learning new things
B. not expect too much of them
C. achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own
D. create as many learning opportunities as possible
B. parental controls satisfy only the needs of the parents and the values of the community
C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children
alone
D. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation
B. punishment
C. behaviour
D. instruction
B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children
C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality
D. satisfy their children"s needs
the TV, or her boyfriend, she said "the phone". Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which
makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1 - The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create
more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone
talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have an
ything to talk about?
Point 2 - The mobile phone means that we are never alone. "The mobile saved my life," says Crystal
Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she
managed to make the call that brought the ambulance(救护车) to her rescue.
Point 3 - The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl
Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at and time of day to ask where they are , where they
are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4 - The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, "We worked in separate
offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near--but we
didn"t meet for the first two weeks!"
Point -5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several
complete strangers simultaneously ( 同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn"t know
what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while
they"re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access(存取) the
Internet, the biggest library on Earth.
B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.
C. People communicate more since telephone has been created.
D. People communicate more because of more traffic.
B. Mobile phones bring convenience as well little secret to people.
C. Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.
D. Mobile phones are part of people"s life.
a. Point 1. b. Point2. c. Point3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5.
B. a, e
C. a, c
D. b, e
B. a fax machine
C. the phone line hooked up to the computer
D. a microphone
B. Kinds of Phone
C. how to Use Phones
D. Advantage of Phones
Using microwaves to directly heat owners of a room would save much of the energy wasted by
heating walls and furniture. And despite popular ideas about microwaves, this technique would be safe,
according to Charles R. Burlier of the Microwave Research Center in Marlborough, New Hampshire.
Low-power microwaves only penetrate (贯穿) the skin (low-power microwave penetration in a ham is
about 0.2 inches, for example) and with no negative effects.
To test this idea, Buffler subjected himself to microwaves in a special room using a standard
500-watt, 2459 MHz magnetron (磁控管). He found that a person will start to feel warmth at about 20
milliwatts per square centimeter (mw. / sq. cm. ) ; a satisfactory feeling of warmth occurs between 35 and
50mw. / sq. cm. By comparison, a person standing in noonday summer sun feels the amount of 85
mw. / sq. cm. And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven receives about 1000 mw. / sq. cm.
In houses of the future, each room could be provided with its own magnetron, says Buffler. When
you stepped into the living room, for example, a motion detector (运动感应器)would turn on the
magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves. In the same way that a microwave oven heats up
a hamburger, but not the plate it’s on, you would feel warmth from the microwaves without changing the
temperature of your coffee table. (You could, however, make your favorite easy chair even more
comfortable by treating it with a radiation-absorbing chemical.)
While it might be some time before homeowners are comfortable enough with the idea to set up
whole-body microwave heaters in houses, Buffler says microwaves may attract livestock(家畜) farmers.
Lambs that are born outdoors in winter, for example, are frequently lost to cold. Microwaves could warm
the lambs safely and quickly.
B. A new microwave oven.
C. A popular technique.
D. The magnetron.

lead the crowd in cheering for the team it likes best.
About five years ago. cheerleaders were considered to be simply entertainers. Today there is much
more Cheerleading in America which has become another form of athletic competition. Cheerleaders today
are expected to be gymnasts and dancers. They "are expected to be quick and strong.
Many cheerleaders are better athletes than the boys and girls on sports teams. High school
cheerleading especially has become more difficult. The students must be in top physical shape. They must
be able to jump high, turn circles in the air and lift each other. Teachers say this is the result of the influence
of college cheerleaders. High school students watch college football and basketball games on TV. They
see how the cheerleaders throw each other into the air and perform difficult athletic movements. They want
to do the same thing. There is one big difference between the two groups. however. College cheerleaders
in America are young men and women. The men do most of the lifting. At most high schools only girls are
cheerleaders. It"s very difficult for them to hold others on their shoulders and throw them into the air. There
are a number of ways high school cheerleaders are improving their skills. They are exercising and lifting
weights to increase their strength. And they are attending camps during the summer holidays to learn new
techniques. Cheerleaders test their skills by taking part in competitions against cheerleaders from other
schools. just like other athletes. Coaches at some high schools say this new kind of athletic cheer leading
has caused some problems .
They say girls who were soccer and basketball players are now competing for places on a cheer
leading team. As more girls attempt to become cheerleaders, sports teams suffer from a lack of good
players.

Kimberly Oliver was the first National Teacher of the Year from her state. She taught five-year-old
children at a public school in Maryland, near Washington, D.C. President Bush honored her and other
