globalization, more and more people realize that it is necessary to study in an English-speaking country.
UK does not only offer the chance to study the original English, it also has so many first-class universities, whose qualifications are widely respected all over the world. Besides the academic, there are many fun
elements too; its famous football environment is definitely one for me! Since UK has such a diverse society, I feel there is less chance that there would be any racism(种族歧视) at boarding school. This is one

relaxed once I arrived; the staff members were so nice that I felt that my spoken English was better than it actually was! As soon as I walked into the day room (日间休息室) of my boarding house, I was
absolutely amazed by the friendly atmosphere: Everyone was so friendly that a boy as shy as I had no
difficulty in setting in, and I made many new friends on my very first day, although I was struggling to

You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn"t been a salesman. You needn"t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly views; you needn"t listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn"t always keep patience and smile; you needn"t repeat the same sentences over again; you needn"t talk to somebody you dislike.
I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. In spite of the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn"t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don"t think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong bad effects on study.
Most students don"t see the relationship between studies and work in a correct way. In my opinion, if it isn"t a must for money reasons, students should be cautious about taking up a part-time job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation.
1. What caused the writer to give up his part-time job?
A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower
B. He often missed some college activities
C. Sometimes he felt tired and unhappy
D. All the above
2. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word "sacrificing"?
A. losing
B. wasting
C. using
D. getting
3. The writer thought __________.
A. to do part-time job was unnecessary
B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study
C. it"s hard to plan study and work correctly
D. part-time jobs were good for students
4. Who should take part-time jobs according to the text above?
A. Every college student
B. Those who want to get study experience
C. Those in great need of money
D. Those from very rich families

Snake dishes have become popular 1 recent years. Snake meat in various flavors(风味) is often
seen in restaurant advertisements. Eating snake seems to be now in vogue(盛行), and 2 you haven"t
eaten snake yet, you are considered " out of date". But I wonder whether all the trends are worth 3
(follow).
Some people may defend themselves 4 saying that snake meat is nutritious. But these people don"t
realize that many parasites (寄生虫), 5 (find) inside snakes, will do harm to our health.
According to a survey, about 1,000 tons of snakes are eaten every year in China and sometimes as
many as 10 tons of snakes 6 (serve) on dinner tables in Shenzhen in a single day!
These figures warn us that if no 7 (act) is taken, the number of snakes will drop and that will make 8 increase in mice and worms population, 9 will result in a decrease (减产) of crops output.
Who will see such tragedy happen?
So let"s start not to eat snakes any more because " to protect the snake is to protect 10 ."
places in England: Big Ben, the Tower of London and the River Thames.
You can see some of the most interesting places in London by getting on the tour buses. Or you can
take a ride on the London Eye. This large wheel slowly takes you 135m above the River Thames.
The River Thames is London"s main waterway. It has shaped the capital"s landscape, history and
geography. So one of the best ways of knowing more about the city is to take a trip along the river.
The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, has become one of the main symbols of
London. The sound of the bell, which you can hear at the beginning of many television and radio
programmes, has become well-known throughout the nation.
No visit to London is complete without a look at the Tower of London, in the eastern part of the city.
After Big Ben, the Tower may be London"s most visited tourist spot. Directly south is Tower Bridge,
which is more than100 years old.
Along all the palaces in London, Buckingham Palace is the most famous. It has been the main London
home of the royal family since Queen Victoria moved there in 1873. You can visit some of the rooms in
August and September. And most mornings of the year you can watch the soldiers outside changing the
guard.
About one hour by train out of London is the Tower of Windsor. Here you can visit another of the
Queen"s homes-Windsor Castle. There was a fire in 1992 and many of the rooms were badly burned.
But now they are full of beautiful pictures, tables and chairs again.
Sightseeing in London is great, but it can get very tiring. So, the best way to start the day is to fill up
with an English breakfast.
You can buy an English breakfast in nearly every hotel, and at many restaurants and cafes. An English
pub is a good place to stop for lunch and a drink. You can get hot or cold food and try one of England"s
many ales(浓啤酒). Fish and chips are also a traditional English meal. So look out for fish and chip shops
in cities as well as by the sea.
Or you can sit outside one of the many roadside pubs and cafes in London, and simply watch the busy
world go by.
B. the Big Ben can be heard everywhere in London
C. only some of the hotels in England serve breakfast.
D. the London Eye can carry you where you like to go
B. The Tower of London
C. Big Ben
D. The River Thames
B. tour the Buckingham Palace
C. tour the city along the River Thames
D. watch the soldiers outside the Buckingham Palace changing guards.
B. interests
C. characteristics
D. culture
B. tourists in London
C. history in London
D. sightseeing in London
