Snake dishes have become popular 1 recent years. Snake meat in various flavors(风味) is often
seen in restaurant advertisements. Eating snake seems to be now in vogue(盛行), and 2 you haven"t
eaten snake yet, you are considered " out of date". But I wonder whether all the trends are worth 3
(follow).
Some people may defend themselves 4 saying that snake meat is nutritious. But these people don"t
realize that many parasites (寄生虫), 5 (find) inside snakes, will do harm to our health.
According to a survey, about 1,000 tons of snakes are eaten every year in China and sometimes as
many as 10 tons of snakes 6 (serve) on dinner tables in Shenzhen in a single day!
These figures warn us that if no 7 (act) is taken, the number of snakes will drop and that will make 8 increase in mice and worms population, 9 will result in a decrease (减产) of crops output.
Who will see such tragedy happen?
So let"s start not to eat snakes any more because " to protect the snake is to protect 10 ."

places in England: Big Ben, the Tower of London and the River Thames.
You can see some of the most interesting places in London by getting on the tour buses. Or you can
take a ride on the London Eye. This large wheel slowly takes you 135m above the River Thames.
The River Thames is London"s main waterway. It has shaped the capital"s landscape, history and
geography. So one of the best ways of knowing more about the city is to take a trip along the river.
The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, has become one of the main symbols of
London. The sound of the bell, which you can hear at the beginning of many television and radio
programmes, has become well-known throughout the nation.
No visit to London is complete without a look at the Tower of London, in the eastern part of the city.
After Big Ben, the Tower may be London"s most visited tourist spot. Directly south is Tower Bridge,
which is more than100 years old.
Along all the palaces in London, Buckingham Palace is the most famous. It has been the main London
home of the royal family since Queen Victoria moved there in 1873. You can visit some of the rooms in
August and September. And most mornings of the year you can watch the soldiers outside changing the
guard.
About one hour by train out of London is the Tower of Windsor. Here you can visit another of the
Queen"s homes-Windsor Castle. There was a fire in 1992 and many of the rooms were badly burned.
But now they are full of beautiful pictures, tables and chairs again.
Sightseeing in London is great, but it can get very tiring. So, the best way to start the day is to fill up
with an English breakfast.
You can buy an English breakfast in nearly every hotel, and at many restaurants and cafes. An English
pub is a good place to stop for lunch and a drink. You can get hot or cold food and try one of England"s
many ales(浓啤酒). Fish and chips are also a traditional English meal. So look out for fish and chip shops
in cities as well as by the sea.
Or you can sit outside one of the many roadside pubs and cafes in London, and simply watch the busy
world go by.

newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news
from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading
a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives- the
big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the
same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It"s already happening in areas
that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more
coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do — as we develop a better understanding of
how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It"s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from
Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I am pretty sure that it will happen in the future.
You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the
things you want to read- sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media
(煤体). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off
newspapers, but that hasn"t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a
screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it is never really pleasant to read something just
on a screen.

C. Make Your Own Newspaper
D. The Future of Newspapers
B. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer.
C. newspapers will cover more scientific research
D. more and more people will watch TV.
B. A menu of important news

ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment.
As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives,
therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant"s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important
builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills
small trees and undergrowth, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in
both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open
spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out
sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants,
elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the
forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to
get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the
elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest
and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C. The effect of African elephants" search for food.
D. The eating habit of African elephants.
B. Worsening the state.
C. Improving the quality
D. Deciding the conditions.

D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.

I have been using the Internet since I was five years old, when my dad first sat me down in front of our
computer and connected me to the World Wide Web.
I"ve always felt like a master of the Internet world. AOL Instant Messaging, MSN, Gmail, Facebook, Myspace - I"ve got it all under control. I thought there was nothing more to the Internet besides checking
my e-mail and wasting my time until I found out about electronic commerce (e-commerce): business on
the Internet. Do Amazon.com, Yahoo.com, or monster.com mean anything to you?
My friends often said they got cheap textbooks on Amazon.com, or had a good deal on Steve Madden boots that were on sale at SteveMadden.com. Unfortunately for me, I went on with my "e-commerce-less" Web-surfing, unaware of all the deals I was missing out on.
That is, of course, until my sister finally sold the idea to me.
"Why are all these packages arriving in the mail for you, Katy?" I asked her one day. Strange envelopes had been put on our doorstep for weeks now, each one always addressed to my sister; and we all know
little sisters should never be getting more mail than their older siblings (兄弟姐妹)!
"Oh, it"s the stuff I ordered online!" she answered. I watched as she opened item after item. There was
no way our parents were letting her spend that much money - online or off!
"How much did all of this cost?"
"Oh, only about $15 in all!" She said excitedly. "Everything on eBay is on sale! It"s better than going to
the mall."
I felt as if my whole life, there had been a giant store in my backyard that I had never known about.
That week, I ordered a used Spanish textbook for 10 percent of the publisher"s price. A few days later,
I bought an iPod protector and a book or two from the wonderful eBay.com.

being forgotten on a bench in a town near San Francisco, police said.
Shahla Ghannadian had entrusted(委托) her 2,000-dollar Louis Vuitton handbag and its precious
contents to her husband after they stopped at an ice cream shop in the city of Sausalito on Sunday,
according to authorities. He left it on a bench near a downtown parking lot, and the oversight was not
noticed until the couple was back at their hotel, said Sausalito police sergeant (警官) Kurtis Skoog. The

The purse contained a Cartier watch, cash, and jewelry worn by the mother and the bride at the

catching a flight back to Canada on Sunday night. Family members checked the bench, but the purse
was gone.
Local resident John Suhroff walked into the police department the next day with the bag, its contents
intact(完整无缺的), Skoog said. Suhroff handed the bag to a clerk, saying it held "either costume or
junk jewelry".
"We called the owner, and they were ecstatic (狂喜的)," said Skoog. A family friend picked up the
