Green-space facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-evident statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of green-spaces in the urban environment is a first step on the right way; this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspaces in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants (居民) are using these spaces. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town-and-country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate (不成比例的) attention for forms of recreation far from home, whereas (但是)there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obivous that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory (强制性的) activities can also have a recreative aspect. The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot of enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you. 小题1: According to the author, the importance of greenspaces in the urban environment _______.A.is still unknown | B.is being closely studied | C.is usually neglected | D.has been fully recognized | 小题2:The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to _______.A.the disproportion of recreation facilities in the neighborhood | B.all of the recreation facilities far from home | C.relatively little attention for recreative possibilities | D.the improvement of recreative possibilities in the neighborhood | 小题3:The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of greenspaces should be provided _______.A.in special areas | B.in the suburbs | C.in the neighbourhood of the house | D.in gardens and parks | 小题4: The author says “more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect” to _______.A.suggest that obligatory activities don’t need to serious | B.show that recreation activities are very important | C.show how recreation activities have spread wildly | D.suggest how to offer recreation activities around home | 小题5:Why would someone only feel himself at home according to the last paragraph?A.One lives the very best standard of living. | B.There are too many distractions outside his home. | C.There are few recreations around his house. | D.One needs the street door of his house to be opened always. |

Thousands of years ago, birthdays were considered special days. On birthdays, the bad spirits were able to harm you and change your life. It was believed that the only way to solve the problem was to have your friends and family around you, so that good wishes and presents would keep the bad spirits away. Also, noisemakers were thought to be used at parties as a way of scaring away the evil spirits. The custom of lighting candles was created by people believing that the gods lived in the sky. By lighting candles and torches, they were sending a signal or prayer to the gods, so they could be answered. Blowing out the candles and making a wish were thought to be another way of sending a signal or a message. This is how the way we celebrate our birthdays came about. But different cultures celebrate in different ways. The birthday story in the Bible(圣经) that we know best is about the birth of the Christ in Bethlehem(地名:伯利恒). For nearly 2000 years since that day, the Christian world has been honoring this birth. The day many Englishmen celebrate is, of course, Christmas. There are other references to birthday parties. King Pharaoh celebrated his birthday by making a feast for his court followers. That was over 4000 years ago. The story of King Herod tells that on his birthday he made a supper for his lords, high captains and other special friends in Galilee (地名:加利利). 小题1: According to the passage, good wishes and presents given by one’s friends and family on his birthday can _____________________.A.cheer him up | B.prove that he’s a popular person | C.bring him a big fortune | D.push bad spirits away | 小题2: Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.The custom of lighting candles originated with the gods. | B.The gods celebrate their birthdays by lighting candles. | C.People send messages to the gods by lighting or blowing out the candles. | D.The gods will help people realize their dreams on their birthdays. | 小题3: The two ancient kings’ ways of celebrating their birthdays show__________________.A.how great the two kings were | B.how different cultures celebrate in different ways | C.the two kings’ excellent cooking skills | D.that their court followers were awarded the special honors | 小题4: The passage is mainly about __________________.A.the functions of the noises made on birthdays. | B.how to scare away the bad spirits on birthdays | C.the origin of a famous day Christmas | D.how birthdays came about |

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you"re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out. But genes don"t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height. No doubt(怀疑) you"re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There"s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up). Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you"re at now, how you"ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through. Don"t be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later ——between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys. You"ll usually begin to notice that you"re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty. 小题1:If you want to know how fast and how tall you should grow, ____________.A.you should have enough exercise | B.you can ask doctors for help | C.you should save the environment | D.You can record your growth during puberty | 小题2: This passage is mainly about ____________.A.how the genes work in your body | B.when is the time you grow fast | C.why you look like your parents | D.how you grow to a certain height | 小题3: After reading this passage, we can explain ___________.A.how good it is to be a doctor | B.how much sleep time we need | C.why genes can’t decide everything | D.what healthy diet is | 小题4: Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Your height most probably depends on how high your parents are. | B.Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’. | C.The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed. | D.You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast. |

If we observe carefully, we van find that most of the flowers in nature are red, orange and yellow. If we have seen a black flower, it’s a chance in million. People have made a census(普查)to colours of more than four thousand kinds of flowers and discovered that only eight of them are black. Why? As we know, sunlight is formed by seven different kinds of coloured light. The wave length of each light changes, so the quantity of heat in each light changes, too. Flowers, especially their petals(花瓣), are very delicate(纤弱) and prone(易于) to the harm caused by high temperature. Black flowers can take in all the light waves, which cause the flowers to dry up in a high temperature. So black flowers can rarely survive sunlight. But red flowers, orange flowers and yellow flowers can protect themselves from sunlight by reflecting the red light, orange light and yellow light, each of which has a large quantity of heat. That is why red, orange and yellow flowers are very common in nature while black flowers are so rare. 小题1:We can hardly find black flowers because _____.A.they are so weak that it’s difficult for them to grow up | B.there are no black flowers in the world. | C.the petals of black flowers are very delicate | D.they can take in the light of all wave lengths, which make the flowers dry up | 小题2: Sunlight is formed by _____.A.many different kinds of coloured light | B.three different kinds of coloured light—red, orange and yellow | C.seven different kinds of coloured light | D.four thousand kinds of coloured light | 小题3:The red, orange or yellow light contains _____.A.less heat than the other lights | B.more heat than the other lights | C.a great deal of heat | D.a little heat | 小题4:“It is a chance in a million” means_____________A.it is common | B.it is extremely rare | C.it’s lucky | D.it’s impossible |

Matt grows the best vegetables in the village. He grows fruit too – big, sweet apples and oranges. And what else? Well, the biggest and the prettiest flowers. Things grow in Matt’s garden all through the year. He cuts some flowers for his sitting room table; and of course , he eats some fruit and vegetables. But he sells everything else in the market. Matt is not a poor man. He knows a few other gardens; but he does not have any friends. You might ask, “What is that?” Why doesn’t he have friends. I will tell you. People do not understand him. And they do not understand his garden. “Why not?” You will ask. “It is a very good garden, isn’t it?” It is a wonderful garden. Matt plants things in spring, summer, autumn and winter. After that he does very little work. He sits in the garden with his small radio. And everything grows. People ask, “How does Matt grow these wonderful things? He waters the plants sometimes, but he doesn’t do anything else. He just sits under an orange tree with his radio. He listens to music nearly all day!” and that is all quite true. People cannot understand it, and so they don’t like it very much. Matt likes music. But what about the garden? Who does the work? I will tell you another true thing: the music does the work. All plants love music; and Matt knows that. Do you want big vegetables and the loveliest flowers?
