that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale. Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian
emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was
Mumtazl Mahan: its shortened form Taj Mahan, means "pride of the palace". In the year 1630 this beloved wife
of the emperor died. He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne. He decided out of his
love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.
He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design
was complete. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj
Mahan, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
The building itself stands on a marble platform 29 meters square and 6-7 meters high. Towers rise from
each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air. It is an eight-sided building made
of white marble.
The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river
connected by a silver bridge. However his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and
for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the tomb of his beloved wife.

go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this
or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour (剌耳的; 拙劣的) music, indeed, but it has to be faced.
The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old.
Where did the expression come from?
The first information comes from the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. He said in 1851 that the
expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their clue (提示,
暗示) to go on, they often said, "It"s time to go to face the music." And that is exactly what they did-face the
orchestra (管弦乐队) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be
friendly or perhaps unfriendly especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, "to face the music"
came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because
you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection (视察) by their leader. The soldiers
worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean-shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men
had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?
B. something unpleasant to be experienced
C. your leader"s inspection
D. sour pop music
B. the American writer James Fennimore cooper
C. some American actors
D. the American orchestra
B. to be found weak
C. to show themselves up in public
D. to be inspected by their leader
B. how to deal with something unpleasant
C. how to learn English phrase
D. how to go through difficulty
school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an
understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.
There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language and about the same
number who have learnt it besides their mother tongue. It is said there are one billion people learning
English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English.
Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can
communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about
the dangers of "mono-culturalism", a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food
and listen to the same music?
Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary (相反),
I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each
other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least
some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with India)…
If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald"s burgers? Surely not. If English
becomes more dominant (占主导地位的), it will kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa
or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but also one
or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.
When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic
email from a listener in Ireland. "The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it"s like a rose," he
said. "But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?"
Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just
by planting a few roses, you don"t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people
want to plant English roses, that"s fine by me.

the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important
and requires immediate attention. So it is with the telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives
a call during sleeping hours, he may think that it"s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call
communicates its importance.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the USA guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded
if the invitation to a dinner party reaches them only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true
in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in
advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning
of time is not the same in different cultures that treat time differently; being on time is valued highly in
American life, for example. If people are not on time, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible.
In the USA no one would think of keeping a business friend for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person
who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few
words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
B. the matter is too difficult to handle
C. the matter requires immediate attention
D. it is a matter of life and death
B. private life
C. getting along with others
D. business
B. three or four days before the party date in some cultures
C. three or four days before the party date in the USA
D. at your chosen time

and so the film industry there is called "Bollywood". Bollywood makes twice as many movies each year
as Hollywood-more than 800 films a year.
2_____. For one thing. Bollywood movies are much longer than most Hollywood movies. Most
Bollywood movies are more than three hours long, and contain singing, dancing, action, adventure,
mystery, and romance. Because Bollywood films contain so many different features, this style of film
is sometimes called a "masala" film.("Masala" is an Indian word for a mixture of spices.)
3_____. It takes much longer to make a movie in Hollywood than in Bollywood. In fact, filming may
begin on a Bollywood movie before the script (剧本) is even finished. The director and writers can make
up the story while the film is being made. 4_____.
Bollywood actors are very popular and some are in such high demand that they may work on several
movies at the same time. 5_____. Since most Bollywood movies follow the same kind of story, shooting
scenes for several films at the same time is not a big problem for actors or directors. This also helps keep
the cost of Bollywood movies lower than the cost of Hollywood movies. The average Bollywood film,
with a budget (预算) of only two million U. S. dollars, seems very cheap compared to the average budget
of sixty million U.S. dollars for a Hollywood film-thirty times as much!

known as "cowboys". In China, jeans are known as niuzaiku, also, "cowboy trousers", which
means they are connected with the American West cowboy culture and outdoor work.
Jeans are usually made from denim (粗布), but may also be made from other materials. The earliest
known cloth for jeans was a thick cotton cloth from the Indians. At first they were working clothes. They
became popular among teenagers in the 1950s. Today jeans are a very popular form of casual wear around
the world and come in many styles and colors.
Jeans were first made in Genoa in Italy. The trousers were made for the Genoese navy (海军) because
they needed trousers which could be worn wet or dry, and whose legs could be easily rolled up while the
men were cleaning the ships. These jeans would be washed by pulling them in large fishing nets behind the
ship, and the sea water would make them white.
In the 1850s Levi Strauss, a business man living in San Francisco, was selling blue jeans under the
"Levi"s" name to the coal workers of California.
During World War II, the coal workers liked jeans very much because they were strong and did not tear
easily. In the 1950s, jeans became popular with young people in the United States. Wearing of blue jeans by
teenagers was the symbol of rebels (反叛者) in TV programmes and movies. Some cinemas and restaurants
refused to let people in if they wore blue jeans. In the 1980s, jeans finally became high fashion clothing, when
famous designers started making their own styles of jeans, with their own labels on them. Sales of jeans went
up and up.
