poorly, because they make many mistakes.
The students who use dictionaries most do not learn especially well either. The ones who look up every
new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language
dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations of
English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has
many translations in English.
The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000
words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea
and understand new words from the context (上下文). Then they read again and use the dictionary to look
up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not
sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think
a noun might have an unusual plural form, they check these in a dictionary.
B. dictionaries are not necessary to the students who learn English
C. it is very important for students to use good dictionaries properly
D. using dictionaries very often can"t help to improve writing
B. At the end of the reading
C. During the first reading
D. At the beginning of the reading

B. How to improve spoken English.

learners. Here are some good methods, which can help you improve your English quickly.
First of all, you must have correct attitude. Please love English, not hate it. And you don"t feel shy when
you say or speak English. Remember one sentence: Put your face in your pocket.
Secondly, I think grammar rules, new words and phrases are important, but they are not enough. For
example, some people are quite good at grammar and learned a lot of English words and phrases. But they
can"t speak English when they meet foreign friends.
The most effective (有效的) way to learn English well is to often use English. Don"t be afraid and don"t
laugh at others. We"d better listen, speak, read and write more. You can go to English corner, talk with
foreigners or talk with your friends. If you have time, listen to the radio or English program. Listening to this
good material can help you improve your listening and understanding. And then, you can read English books,
newspapers or novels. They are wonderful. You can use the internet, chat with net-friends or write E-mails,
dairies …Through these ways, you can get more for your English.
English isn"t so difficult that we can"t learn it well. As long as we set our mind to learn English well, I"m
sure everyone will be successful.

December, a single event killed more than 2000 people in the Philippines. Sending workers to stabilize (加固)
mountainsides using steel bars (钢筋) can help a lot, but it introduces new difficulties because of dust and
loosen heavy, dangerous debris (岩屑) from the work. "It"s a quite dangerous job," says Giorgio Pezzuto of
D" Appolonia, working with eight other companies. Now there may be an answer: a three-ton robot called
Roboclimber.
"The idea is to operate a machine far away that can do the stabilizing job without a human being near,"
says Pezzuto, manager for the project, which is supported by a European organization. Engineers say that
the machine will be faster and cheaper than manual labor (人工). The robot, a large radio-controlled four-
legged spider, has cost at least $2 million so far. It should be able to climb mountainsides, drill (钻) holes
and insert (插入) steel bars there. Testing should begin in May.

examinations of more than 386,000 Dutchmen. Researchers found that the brightest subjects came from the
smallest families and had few, if any, brothers and sisters when they were born. Thus the firstborn child in
a family of two was usually brighter than the last child in a family.
The effects of family size on intelligence (智力) may be explained by what a house full of children does
to the home environment. It increases the amount of time a child spends with other children and decreases
the amount of parental attention he or she receives. For example, a parent with one restless child is likely to
sit and play with the child. The same parent with two or three restless children is more likely to ask them to
play with each other. Some psychologists say that when a child interacts (交往) with an adult alone, the child
learns more and therefore intelligence is increased. Researchers have also found that parents often expect more
from their first-born, which motivates (激发) such children to seek a higher standard.
Not all psychologists agree that firstborns tend to be more intelligent. They say that the data need to be
examined more closely for other possible explanations. For example, in industrialized nations most large
families come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Thus environment, not family size or birth order,
may be influencing intelligence. On the other hand, there may be genetic variations (基因突变) within families
that also explain the cause of differences.
If firstborns have advantages in the area of intelligence, research has also shown that they may be more
conforming (墨守陈规) and have poorer social skills than their younger siblings (brothers and/or sisters).
Although more research needs to be done in this area, it is clear that such factors as birth order, the order in
which boys and girls are born into a family, the number of years that separate siblings probably have an effect
on the development of intelligence, personality, and social relationships.
B. persons chosen to be studied in experiments
C. citizens of a country
D. things talked about in a conversation, discussion or book
B. no cleverer than the younger
C. less clever than the younger
D. as clever as the younger
B. Their parents spend less time with other children.

grow almost everywhere in the world but the hottest and coldest areas (地区). Among the leading countries

There are various kinds of apples, but a very few make up the majority of those grown for sale. The three

A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet website called a "blog". The word "blog" is a short way
of saying "web log", or "personal website". Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they
like.
There are millions of blogs on the internet today. They provide news information and ideas to the people
who read them. They contain links to other websites, and they provide a place for people to write their ideas
and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 web logs. It says that blogs are most
popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study
also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the
Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And
American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed
his free blog service "weblogs. com". He said the site became too costly to continue. he started the blog four
years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the
site was closed.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca"s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the website in 1999.
She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called The Weblog Handbook. It
has been translated into four languages so far.
Miss Blood says Rebecca"s Pocket gets about thirty thousand visitors a month. She writes about anything
and everything-politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how
to prevent being stolen from online bank accounts.

C. tell readers about blogs.
D. tell readers how to write blogs
B. medical advice
C. advertisements
