B Pingyao, located (坐落于) in the center of Shanxi Province, is a famous historic cultural city of China and a world cultural heritage (遗产) site. It is 90 kilometers south of Taiyuan on the Fen River. People lived in Pingyao during the New Stone Age. Its long period as a county government seat (县衙) has left Pingyao with lots of historic buildings and sites, with a 2,700-year history. Ninety-nine of them are under government protection, including Zhengguo Temple, Shuanglin Temple and Pingyao Ancient City. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, businessmen organized commercial (商业的) groups that did business nationwide. Shanxi Province had some of the most important ones and Pingyao was their center. In 1823, a store, known as Rishengchang (Sunrise Prosperity), traded in bank checks (支票) rather than in silver or gold coins. It was the beginning of modern Chinese banking. Branch (分支) banks were soon set up in major cities in China and other parts of Asia, leading to great development in Pingyao. Its lacquer ware (漆器) became well known as well. In Pingyao Ancient City are many traditional houses and commercial buildings, 3,797 of which are protected and more than 400 of which are in good condition. Not only do the houses in Pingyao show Shanxi’s history and culture, but this large number is valuable for studying its history, customs, ancient buildings and art. Most of these houses are still used as homes and shops of local people. We tried so hard to make things better for our kids but we made them worse. For my naughty boys, I’d know better. I’d really like for them to know about hand-me-down clothes and home-made ice cream and leftover meatloaf. I really would. My cherished boys, I hope you learn humility (谦逊) by surviving failure and that you learn to be honest even when no one is looking. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it is all right to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl (爬) under the covers (被子) with you because he’s scared, I hope you’ll let him. And when you want to see a Disney movie and your kid brother wants to tag along, I hope you take him. I hope you have to walk uphill with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books, and when you learn to use computers, you also learn how to add and subtract (减) in your head. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on the stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole (旗杆). I hope you get sick when someone blows smoke in your face. I don’t care if you try beer once, but I hope you won’t like it. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandpa or go fishing with your uncle. I hope your father punishes you when you throw a baseball through a neighbor’s window, and that your mother hugs you and kisses you when you give her a plaster of pared mold (一个石膏模型) of your hand. It is interesting how NASA(美国航空航天管理局)chose their astronauts for landing them on the moon. They chose men 26 the age of twenty and thirty-five. There were about fifty of them, Many were 27 air pilots. 28 were scientists with two or three degrees. NASA telephoned each man they were going to choose; told him the plans and the 29 they might get in. They then asked him if he was willing to be trained as an astronaut. “How could any man 30 such an exciting job?” One of them said, “Dangerous? Of course. It’s dangerous 31 most exciting” The health and physical condition of 32 was, of course, very necessary. 33 those in very good health and physical condition were chosen. They were all 37 to fly in helicopters (直升飞机)。These helicopters landed 38 down to give them some experience of the way the spaceship would 39 land on the moon , They were also taught the 40 facts about the conditions in space. They learnt all the technical details of the spaceships and rockets. They visited the scientists and engineers who 41 them. They visited the factories where they were 42. They learnt how every 43 of a space-ship and its instruments work. They also learnt every detail of ground-control 44 . In a word, to be chosen as an astronaut. Today our lives are changing faster than at any time in history. Here we report on three important changes that will have a big impact on our everyday lives in the future. The cashless society Cash and bank-notes will disappear almost completely. They will be replaced by smart cards, namely plastic cards: microchip(微芯片)processors(处理器)loaded with some money. When we pay for goods, the shop assistant will put our smart card into a payment terminal(终端)and money will come into his card from our card. When all the money is used up,we will be able to reloadit by putting it into a telephone, dialing our bank account and money will be put into the card from the account. Interactive telephones Talking computers will play an important part. They will recognize speech, ask us what information we need, look through a database, and put the information into speech. If we want to book a flight or pay a bill by phone, we will interact with a talking computer to do so. Human telephone operators will be used only for more complex operations such as dealing with complaints or solving special problems. Traffic jams in cities will be reduced because drivers will use electronic route maps to find the quickest route to their destination. Electronic systems will start changing motorists for driving in cities. As soon as motorists have to pay to drive in cities, they will stop using their cars and use public transport instead. Speed control systems will be built into cars. These systems will automatically(自动地)regulate the speed of the car to take account of traffic and weather conditions and prevent accidents. It will be many years before these changes bring results but when they do,there will be a titanic improvement in road safety. With the development of science and technology, more and more advanced things will be invented or created. Life in the future is undoubtedly different from that at the present. 小题1:Cash and bank-note will disappear because .A.they will be out of use sooner or later | B.they will be replaced by plastic cards convenient to use | C.we can load money from the bank | D.they will be rejected by payment terminals | 小题2:What will you do if the money in your card is used up?A.Go to the bank to deposit some money. | B.Put the card into a telephone and dial the bank account. | C.Buy a new card. | D.We don’t know. | 小题3:Which of the following would be the best subtitle for the fourth paragraph?A.Future cars | B.Speed control systems | C.Intelligent cars | D.Traffic jams | 小题4:Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.When we buy tickets for flying somewhere else, we can have a talk with the computer. | B.If you make a complaint, you can use human telephone operation. | C.Drivers will stop using their cars and use public transport in order to prevent accidents. | D.The help of electronic route maps will decrease traffic jams. | 小题5:The underlined word “titanic” in Paragraph 4 means .A.huge and great | B.the name of a ship | C.slight | D.increasing |

Dolphins(海豚)are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this, they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time―at least twenty or thirty years. Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw. Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people. There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area-except for The Penguin. Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them. 小题1:Dolphins are different from many other animals in that they _____.
