Sounds unusual, doesn"t it? But it"s not that unrealistic, with the development of C

railway system. And that"s not all.China has an even greater highspeed railway plan-to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.
China is negotiating to extend its own highspeed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15
years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore
via Vietnam and Malaysia.Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe.
If China"s

The new system would still follow China"s highspeed railway standard. And the trains would be able to
go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.
China"s bullet train (高速客车), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the world"s
fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.

settled, such as safety, rail gauge (轨距), maintenance of railway tracks. So,it"s important to pay attention to every detail.
But the key issue is really money.China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic
railway expansion.
China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment.
Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development.

opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those
countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some muchneeded resources, but would also help develop China"s far west.We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With highspeed
trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all.And they"ll trade with
Central Asian and Eastern European countries.

the world"s most populous market, Chinese star Yao Ming has retired.
Yao made it official Wednesday, telling a news conference that a series of foot and leg injuries
forced him to end his playing career at the age of 30.
"I will formally end my career," said Yao, who became a household name in China before starting
his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in 2002. Yao played eight seasons in the NBA.
"Today is an important day for me and holds a special meaning for both my basketball career and
my future," Yao said. "I had to leave the court since I suffered a stress fracture(断裂) in my left foot
for the third time at the end of last year. My past six months were a painful wait. I have been thinking
about my future over and over. Today I am announcing a personal decision, ending my career as a
basketball player and officially retire. But_one_door_is_closing_and_another_one_is_opening."
Yao said he would return to work with his former Chinese team, the Shanghai Sharks, with the
possibility of becoming general manager. He already owns the club and wants to contribute more.
"My playing career started with the club. I hope I can do something for it," Yao said.
He later appeared with his family on the stage to the applause and cheers of the crowd. He thanked
a lot of people-his family, former coaches, even players like Shaquille O"Neal-"for making me a better
player, I will be always with you. Thank you."
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was among those attending the farewell(告别)conference
Wednesday. Morey made the long trip from Houston. Morey said 20 hours on planes was tiring but
"I would be sorry if I wasn"t here." "It"s a big moment," Morey added. "Yao had a sense of humor, a
great attitude and sense of responsibility. I hope we can continue his culture in the NBA."
Yao had played six years with the Chinese national team before joining the Rockets, and was
already a star in his home country. He carried the Olympic torch through Tian"anmen Square and his
country"s flag during the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He also donated $2 million
and set up a foundation to rebuild schools in the wake of the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan.

user"s mood.Researchers at Queen"s University in Belfast hope to complete the 10 million Euro
project for an emotionsensitive computer within four years.
The aim is to enable computers to think and behave more like humans. The Europewide project is
being led by the university"s School of Psychology and involves 160 researchers from 27 institutions.
The university"s researchers developed the scheme and signed the contract with the European
Commission. The academics said the work will build upon attempts to create "multimodal interfaces
(多模式界面)" which allow machines to sense and respond to the moods of the user.
Programme leader Professor Roddy Cowie said while it sounds like science fiction, computers
which respond to human emotion will appear in the future."At the moment, our use of computers is
limited by the fact that we need a keyboard and a screen to access them," he said."It would make a
big difference if we could interact with them by speaking normally-perhaps through a microphone and
a transmitter (传感器)." But emotion is part of normal speech, and experience has shown that most
users are deeply uncomfortable with speech interfaces that ignore it-too uncomfortable to use them
very much."If we can make computers more intuitive (富于直觉的) and expressive, and also less
challenging to use, there is great potential to let people make fuller use of information technology."
The emotionsensitive computer would have its own "personality" and establish a social relationship
with the user."It"s a fair bet that in 30 years" time, emotionsensitive interfaces will be as much part of life
as windowandmouse interfaces are now," said Professor Cowie. The project team believes such computers will play a major role in teaching and learning.
B.It can create a 10 million Euro profit.
C.It is led by a Southern Ireland team.
D.It has been completed within four years.
B.Through a keyboard.
C.Through the voice of users.
D.Through multimodal interfaces.
B.is determined by his own personality
C.plays an important role in normal speech

D.It will be common for people to use emotionsensitive computers in the future.
charging multiple portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and laptop
computers without the need for cable connections.
Electric cars users may also eventually be able to charge their vehicles wirelessly using the same
technology, said the company, which developed a sample system at Osaka Prefecture University.
Claiming to be the world"s first of its kind, the technology works on the basis of the transmission of
electricity using magnetic fields between the charger and the electronic device.
The system enables wireless charging at distances of up to several meters. With the final aim of
installing public "charging spots" on the streets in order to enable easy charging around the clock,
scientists at Fujitsu Labs are planning to commercially sell products incorporating the new wireless
charging system as early as 2012 but have not yet decided how much they would cost.
"This technology paves the way to integrating compact wireless charging functions into mobile
phones and enabling multiple portable devices to be charged simultaneously without any restrictions
on their position relating to the charger," the company said in a statement.
Mobile phone users in Japan can currently charge their batteries using the disposable portable
plugin batteryoperated device, available at most train stations and convenience stores. However,
phone companies warn long time use of it can damage the phones.
The company added, "We are also looking at applying the results of this work to fields other
than portable electronics, including power transmission between circuit boards(电路板)or computer
chips, and providing mobile charging systems for electric cars."
