I tried to find all the pieces and put them 2 , but it was not possible, so I kept only the 3 piece and
I made it round. I could 4 with it as a toy and became greatly attracted by the 5 that I could reflect
(反射) light to dark places where the sun would never shine-in 6 holes and some other dark places. It
became a 7 for me to get light into the darkest places I could find.
I 8 the little mirror, and, as I 9 up, I would take it out when I had nothing to do and 10 the game,
As I became a 11 , I grew to understand that this was not 12 a child"s game but a metaphor (象征) for
what I might do with my life. I came to 13 that I am not the light or the source of light. But light-truth,
understanding, knowledge-is 14 , and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.
I am just a single piece of a mirror whose 15 design and shape I do not know. 16 , with what I have I
can reflect light into the dark places of this 17 -into the black places in the 18 of men-and change some
things 19 some people. Perhaps others may see and do the same. This is what I am about. This is the 20
of my life.

Kerry and Alice were both artists in Britain. They taught drawing and painting at Cambridge University. Although they were friends, each thought oneself to be the better painter. One day, Kerry promised marriage to Alice. Surprised and pleased by the offer, the girl was not sure whether she would spend her future as a wife or a painter. After a moment she replied as follows, "Each of us must paint a picture. If yours is superior to mine, you can make me your wife. If not, please drop the question." Then it was decided to give it the following day. The next morning, Alice hung her picture on the gate. It showed a bunch of flowers and won high praise from everyone who passed by. Most young architects-particularly those in big cities-can only dream about working in a building of their own. And making that dream come true often means finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his partner, Brain Bell. Their building is a former automobile electrical-parts film in Atlanta. Form the outside, it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting (生锈的) walls. In 2000, Yocum and Bell found this building in the city"s West End. Built in 1947, the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right, so Yocum bought it. He spent eight months of his off-hours on demolition (排除), pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do, and "to treasure what was there- the walls, the rust, and the light." Yocum said. "Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. It"s like an art installation (装置) in there-a slow-motion show." Since the back building had been constructed without windows, an all-glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back of the building is a working area and a living room for Yocum and his wife. A sort of buffer (缓冲) zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom, a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allow views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond. Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work. It has also given these architects a chance to show how they can make more out of less. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
