chose the first. Up early, my husband and I and our three children couldn"t wait to get started. We decided
to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.
As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn"t help noticing that the other
tourists weren"t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed.
As the sun rose higher, Arizona"s famous heat seemed to roast us. There was no shade and our legs were
aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got
back, our legs were like jelly.
The next day, after we"d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the
Canyon-by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.
We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on
our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed (翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground.
I shouted, "STOP, TAKE US BACK!" When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like
jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.
As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I"d
suggest a fourth: buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon,
without fear or tiredness.
B. The children were more joyful than their parents.
C. Bright Angel Trail was not as lovely as they expected.
B. we were unhappy
C. we were dissatisfied
D. we were disappointed
B. It was more comfortable.
C. It turned out to be exciting.
D. It made each of them tired.
B. one needs to dress less when visiting the Grand Canyon.
C. the writer was not serious when she made the suggestion.
D. the whole family narrowly escaped from the air accident.

that the Murray had dried up, not one drop of water left.
One morning I went down to the river to try and catch some fish when I saw my boat high and dry (搁浅)
on the bank. I rushed down the river and saw all mud-no water. The fish were just lying there, dying. I looked
up to see if my friend was there. There was the nest but no eagle (鹰). I called out to her with my special
whistle which I made out of steel.
Suddenly a big shadow came over to me and the eagle landed in her nest and gave her young the food she
was out getting while I whistled. But then I suddenly noticed she was getting thinner and had a bit of sheep"s
wool in the side of her talon (利爪). It was deadly quiet by the river bank, except for some sound from my dog.
And also I couldn"t see one native animal or bird.
When I walked inside the kitchen, Mum and Dad had sad looks on their faces. "It"s time for us to move,
Son, because the river can no longer provide for (养活) us," said Dad. I ran out of the kitchen door with tears
in my eyes, and down to the river bank, to my favorite spot. I said goodbye to my eagle, crying.
When it was time to go, I saw my eagle fly up into the air with her chicks in her talons, going away to try
and find another home, just like us.

Since Erica was a young girl, she had always wanted to meet an alien. Then one day, something truly unbelievable happened. Erica woke up early one bright, sunny Saturday morning. It was a beautiful day, so she went outside to enjoy her breakfast in the sunshine. Then she heard a strange sound coming from the garden. She looked up and saw a short, green creature standing in the middle of the garden. It had two big brown eyes and three ears on top of its head. It was an alien. The alien and Erica stared at each other, neither of them moving. Though meeting an alien was a dream to come true, she was not quite prepared for it. She had to keep up the courage to talk to the alien. So Erica walked over to it cautiously. Suddenly, the alien opened its mouth and said, "Prue." The alien then picked one of the flowers and handed it to Erica. "Prue." the alien said again and pointed to the flower. Erica was very excited to finally meet a real, live alien. Even though they were speaking in completely different languages, they could understand each other. Erica spent the whole day accompanying the alien. They walked around Erica"s garden and picked up different things that they saw-flowers, grass and other plants. Erica showed the alien some of her old toys, saying the English words for all these things and hoping to teach it English. After Erica said each English word, the alien said something in its language. They were teaching each other! When the sun began to set in the evening, the alien looked up at the sky. He pointed to the sky, and said, "Keeta m"gul arul." "I understand," said Erica. The alien smiled at Erica, and she smiled back and waved at it. A rich man was once riding along the road and saw an old man digging in his garden. On the ground lay a young tree, ready to be planted. The rich man called out to the old man, "What kind of tree are you planting there, my good man?" "This is a fig (无花果) tree, sir." he said. "A fig tree?" the rich man was very surprised. "Why, how old are you, may I ask?" "I am ninety years old." "What!" cried the rich man. "You"re ninety years old. You are planting a very young tree now and it"ll take years to give fruit. You certainly don"t hope to live long enough to get any fruit from this tree." The old man looked around the garden. Then he said with a smile, "Tell me, sir. Did you eat figs when you were a boy?" "Sure." the rich man did not know why he asked this question. "Then tell me this," he said, "Who planted the fig trees?" "Why? I don"t know." "You see, sir," went on the old man, "Our ancestors planted trees for us to enjoy and I am doing the same for the people after me." The rich man was quiet and said, "You are right, my good man. We should do some good things for the people after us. Thank you very much." Then he rode away. | |||
