__1__ otherwise assigned (指定) a seat by the teacher, I always __2__ to sit at the back of the
classroom.
All this __3__ after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the

nor did I have the __5__ to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. But for the

Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the __7__ of it! When I first started __8__ the
practice sessions, I didn"t even know the rules of the game, much __9__ what I was doing. Sometimes
I"d get __10__ and take a shot at the wrong direction-which made me feel really stupid.__11__, I wasn"t

practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn"t __13__"just yet".
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the __14__ and the "moves". Being part of a team was fun
and motivating. Very soon the competitive __15__ in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With
time, I learned how to play and made friends in the __16__-friends who respected my efforts to work
hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my __17__ selfconfidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from
"__18__ " in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, __19__ raising my
hand-even when I sometimes wasn"t 100 percent __20__ I had the right answer. Now I have more
selfconfidence in myself.

They are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other
is there to catch him.
They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rockclimbing accident,
and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000foot
rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of most difficult routes(路线).
During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes (尖状物) that guided the ropes and
climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes
and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days.
Wellman"s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In
all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pullups up the rope on the climb.
However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. "He knew that was how I got
injured. "Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started
training.
Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett
dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action

congratulations from friends. "There are real close ties. "

Wherever she goes, Molly leaves her mark. Without saying a word, she speaks to people with her
kind eyes.  Even when she walks away, she leaves an impression. Molly"s mark is a smile, stamped into
the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg.
A few years ago, Molly was badly attacked by a dog. The dog bit all four or Molly"s legs and left
large cuts in her face. Molly"s owner, Kate Harris, took  her to an animal hospital. Doctors there were
able to save Molly"s life, but soon one of her legs became very infected(感染).
At first, doctors thought Molly would have to be put to sleep. But Molly changed their minds. This
pony, doctors noticed, shifted her weight, and rested her good leg from time to time. Doctors knew that
Molly had amazing intelligence, and that she wanted to live.
Several doctors operated on Molly, and removed her infected leg. A false leg was made for her. The

After the operation, Molly walked around on all four legs, as if nothing had ever happened to her!
Now, with every step she takes, she stamps a smile in the dirt. But she leaves her mark in other ways,
too.
Kaye Harris took Molly to the false leg center. There were children there who, like Molly, had artificial
arms or legs. They were amazed to see a pony with a false leg. Molly made them smile and gave them
hope. Soon, Molly began to visit schools, nursing homes, army bases and hospitals. A book was even

We"ve all heard the old saying,"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me."
Don"t you believe it?Words are powerful,and they can hurt-a lot. In fact,if you"re not careful,you can even
hurt yourself,by using the wrong word in your writing.
Recently a friend sent me a copy of an email she received from the customer service department of her
credit card company, after she contacted them with a question about her account. She was happy with their
positive response. But as I read the email, one line jumped out at me:"In lieu of good customer service..."
Did they really mean they were offering her a few extra reward points instead of good customer
service?I doubt it. More likely, what the customer service department meant to say was,"Because good
customer service is important to us..." followed by the details of what they were doing to make sure she
remained a happy customer.
So why didn"t the writer say that?I can only guess that perhaps the writer liked the phrase "in lieu of",
thought it sounded more interesting than saying "because",and so used it-without bothering to check the
true meaning.
Have you ever done that?Try to impress others with a big word, only to find out you"ve used the word
incorrectly? It"s just the opposite effect, isn"t it?You may impress people all right, but it"s not the impression
you were going for.
When you write, remember to choose your words carefully. People may still disagree with what you
say,but they won"t be able to dismiss you because you made careless mistakes in how you said it.
1. What"s the writer"s purpose in giving the saying?
A. To amuse the reader.
B. To persuade the reader.
C. To support a conclusion.
D. To lead to the topic.
2. It can be inferred that the writer"s friend _____.
A. was the manager of the customer service department
B. was the customer of the credit card company
C. emailed a company to complain
D. used a phrase incorrectly
3. What does the phrase "in lieu of" most probably mean?
A. Because of.
B. In honour of.
C. Instead of.
D. In favour of.
4. According to the writer, the customer service department _____.
A. didn"t prefer to use familiar words to attract customers
B. didn"t express what they really meant
C. didn"t need to offer their customers extra reward points
D. succeeded in impressing their customers
