One day, when we had been riding in the burning sun for five hours, we came to a narrow, shaky bridge where a railways crossed a stagnant pond (发臭的池塘)。 For 30 feet there was nothing but the widely-spaced wooden sleepers(枕木)under ore wheels, and nothing to stop us from falling into the steaming bog (沼泽) below if we overbalanced. Right under the bridge lay the bridge and rode straight over, without even slowing down. I stopped.
“What’s up?” he shouted, from the other side.
“I’m not riding over that thing. If I fall, I’ll be there with that cow!”
“There’s nothing to it. I just did it, didn’t I?”
“You’re stronger and taller. My feet can’t touch the ground. You do it for me!”
Mat said strength didn’t come into it and rode off, leaving me staring down into the sickly brown soup. He would be waiting for me around the next corner, but I knew he would give me at least an hour before coming to help. The sun burned my face; sweat ran off my forehead into my eyes and stuck my shirt to my body; mosquitoes flew into my mouth when I breathed. To stand still in this place was to kill myself; anyway, to sit around waiting for Mat to help was more than my feminist (女权主义) pride could take. I rode back along the track a few hundred yards to get a good run-up, and over I went. Mat was right. All the obstacles were in my mind.

What does the underlined part “sickly brown soup” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The body of a dead cow B. The mud on the wheals
C. The dirty water in the pond D. The author’s food for the journey

Las Ramblas is the most famous street in Barcelona. Especially in summer, thousands of tourists go the seaside by passing through this street, making it a centre of shops and bazaars. Not only can you find tourists there, but also thieves, swindlers, cops--- among whom the living statue artists are the most special group. They were covered with greasepaint(化妆油) in different colors, wearing season-disproportional clothes, standing on a pedestal for several hours without making even a single move. Are they real or fake, the guests were wondering--- and then suddenly the statues came to life, just for a few seconds to shift positions. But the movement of the statues seemed like someone just had breathed life into them. They really do look like statues, and that’s how they got their names.
Usually there is a jar or a hat in front of them. They would change to another pose whenever some tourists put a coin in the hat. You may take photos after giving a Euro, or even less, but be careful not to touch the statues, unless you want yourself to be covered in paint. It’s a really special experience, don’t you think?

I found a website that has changed my life. The website is wishuponahero.com and it is all about people helping others, not expecting anything in return.
I am a single mom with a son. My son’s 12th birthday was on October 29th, 2007. Knowing that I didn’t have money to buy him a birthday gift had broken my heart. So, I decided to post a wish on wishuponahero.com for people to send my son birthday cards.
Many cards just started coming in and my little son was very excited and this went on for about three weeks. The smile on his face and the sparkle (闪光) in his eyes brought me to tears.
Then, at the end of November, he started thinking about Christmas and he already knew that there would not be a tree for him because we didn’t have enough money. However it didn’t matter to him. All he talked about was how much he wanted to make other children smile. So he decided to earn money to buy Christmas cards and send them to other children from poor families. My son went out daily and raked leaves and walked some dogs to make money. Not only did he buy cards, but he also made enough money to buy all the stamps and lollipops to send with the cards. He sent out about 100 cards. Doing this brought him the same smile and sparkle in his eyes as the birthday cards that he received did.

A newspaper, published usually on a daily or weekly basis, has the main function of reporting news. Many newspapers also furnish their readers with other pieces of useful information, such as weather reports, TV program broadcast, and other kinds of information. They provide commentary on politics, economics, arts and culture. In nearly all cases and in different degrees, newspapers depend on commercial advertising for their income.
A survey said that nearly six out of ten adults in the United States and Canada read a newspaper every day, and seven out of ten read a paper each weekend. By the time they see a newspaper, most people have already heard about breaking news stories on TV or on the radio. Readers depend on newspapers to provide detailed information and analysis (分析) which TV and radio almost don’t offer. Newspapers not only tell readers that an event has happened but also help readers understand what led to the event and how it will affect the world.
The members of a large newspaper work under the nonstop pressure of deadlines to bring news to readers as quickly as their minds, bodies and the technology they use permit. Reporters, photographers, artists, and editors find the materials and form articles and graphics (图片) —sometimes in just a few hours. Page designers combine articles, photos, advertisements, and eye-catching headlines into page layouts (版面), then quickly print the paper out. Printing system may work through the night to print out more than 60,000 copies per hour.

D. Only by reading the newspaper can readers get the latest news.
71. According to the passage, what affects the pace of a newspaper’s publication?
