The painter Georgia O’keeffe was born in Wisconsin in 1887 and grew up on her family’s farm. At seventeen she decided she wanted to be an artist and left the farm for schools in Chicago and New York, but she never lost her bond with the land. Like most painters, O’Keeffe painted the things that were most important to her, and nearly all her works are simplified portrayals of nature. O’Keeffe became famous when her paintings were discovered and exhibited in New York by the photographer Levered Stieglitz, whom she married in 1924. During a visit to New York in 1929, O’Keeffe was so moved by the bleak(荒凉的) landscape and broad skies of the Western desert that she began to paint its images. Cows’ skulls and other bleached(变白的) bones found in the desert figured prominently(突出的) in her paintings. When her husband died in 1946, she moved to New Mexico permanently and used the horizon lines of the desert, colorful flowers, rocks, barren(贫瘠的) hills, and the sky as subjects for her paintings. Although O’Keeffe painted her best known works in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s, she continued to produce tributes(贡品、颂词) to the Western desert until her death in 1986. O’Keeffe is widely considered to have been a pioneering American modernist painter. While most early modern American artists were strongly influenced by European art, O’Keeffe’s position was more independent. She established her own vision and preferred to view her painting as a private endeavor. Almost from the beginning, her work was more indentifiably American than that of her contemporaries in its simplified and idealized treatment of color, light, space, and natural forms. 小题1: Which of the following best tells what this passage is about ?A.O’Keeffe was a distinctive modern American painter. | B.O’Keeffe was the best painter of her generation. | C.O’Keeffe liked to paint only what was familiar to her. | D.O’Keeffe used colors and shapes that are too reduced and simple. | 小题2:Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an influence on O’Keeffe’s paintings ?A.Her rural upbringing | B.Her life in the West | C.The works of European artists | D.The appearance of the natural landscape | 小题3:Which of the following is most similar to O’Keeffe’s relationship with nature?A.A photoghrapher’s relationship with a model. | B.A writer’s relationship with a publisher. | C.A student’s relationship with a teacher | D.A carpenter’s relationship with a hammer. | 小题4:Why is O’Keeffe considered an artistic pioneer ?A.Her work became influential in Europe. | B.She painted the American Southwest. | C.Her paintings had a definite American style. | D.She painted things that were familiar to her. |

A Charlotte, NC, lawyer bought a box of very rare and expensive cigars, and then insured them against fire among other things.Having smoked his entire great cigars within a month, the lawyer filed claim (索赔) against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires".Of course the insurance company refused to pay, giving the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal way. The lawyer brought the case to the court and out of everybody’s expectation, he actually won! At the end of the trial the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was crazy. But the judge said that the lawyer held a policy (保险单) from the company in which it had promised that the cigars were insured and that it would insure them against fire.Because the company didn’t say what is considered to be unacceptable fire, it had to pay the claim. Rather than put up with long and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the punishment and paid $ 15 ,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires." After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested and accused him of arson (纵火罪).With his own insurance claim from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was charged with burning his insured possessions on purpose and was sentenced to 24 months in prison and a $ 24,000 fine. 小题1:The lawyer had smoked all the cigars ___.A.by design | B.by mistake | C.by accident | D.by contract | 小题2:The proper order of the lawyer’s activities is ___. a.having the company paying his claim b.having himself put in prison and fined c.having smoked all the cigars d.bringing the company to the court e.insuring the box of cigarsA.ecabd | B.acebd | C.ecdab | D.cedba | 小题3:The underlined word "it" in the third paragraph refers to ___.A.the box of cigars | B.the insurance company | C.the policy | D.the claim | 小题4:Which of the following sayings is the best suitable for the lawyer?A.Whoever sits against heaven, it falls in his face. | B.A bad beginning makes a bad ending. | C.Accidents will happen. | D.Even the wise make mistakes sometimes. |

How would you like an easy way to earn 2,500 dollars? All you have to do is to sit around and wait for your meals. There’s catch, however. You have to stay in a chicken cage with a stranger for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for amusement. You can’t leave until the week is up.And a camera will be recording your every move. Two people actually took the job.The idea came from Rob Thompson, a video artist. He wanted to make a film about the way animals are treated. His goal was to raise people’s awareness of the living conditions of animals that are raised for food.He decided to pay $ 5000 out of his own savings to two people who were willing to lie like chicken for a week. To Rob’s surprise, quite a few people answered his advertisement. He had interviews and selected Eric, a 24-year-old restaurant worker, and Pam, a 27-year-old chemist. The plan was for them to spend seven days together in a chicken cage that was six feet long and three feet wide.A camera would record their experience, which would take place in an art museum. The week was long and difficult. They slept on a hard wooden floor. They couldn’t stand up without banging(重击)their heads. They ate vegetarian mash(土豆泥)and drank water from a garden hosepipe(水龙头软管).Their only privacy was a toilet surrounded by a curtain. There were no sinks, mirrors, or toothbrushes in the cage.Their only inspiration was the two framed checks that hung on the wall outside the cage.Visitors who came here were warned, “Do not food the humans.” Finally it was over, Pam and Eric emerged from their cage. They had survived the week, and they each had a $2,500 check in their hands. When Rob Thompson opened the cage, Eric came out, changed into clean clothes, and ate a chocolate bar right away.“It’s great to be able to stand up,” he said.Pam just changed her clothes and left. After a week of visitors and reporters watching her, she didn’t want to talk to anyone. 小题1:What kind of person is Rob Thompson?A.He is curious about people’s personal life. | B.He is kind-hearted to animals. | C.He hates people around. | D.He likes to help poor people. | 小题2:What made it most difficult for the two to stay in the cage?A.They didn’t know each other. | B.They couldn’t lie down to sleep in the cage. | C.They didn’t have meat to eat. | D.They had to do almost everything under others’ eyes. | 小题3:Rob offered the money because he wanted________.A.to see if there were any people who would like to live in a cage | B.to show the public how bitter animals’ life could be | C.to make more money by publishing the recorded video tapes | D.to improve housing conditions of working people like Eric | 小题4:Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A.Easy Way to Earn $ 2 500. | B.Do Not Feed the Humans. | C.Living Like a Chicken. | D.Getting Along Well Anyway. |
