Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was one of the most private women in the world, yet when she went to work as an editor in the last two decades of her life, she revealed(展现)herself as she did nowhere else. After the death of her second husband, Greek shipping magnate(巨头)Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline’s close friend and former White House social secretary Letitia Baldrige made a suggestion that she consider a career(职业)in publishing. After consideration, Jacqueline accepted it. Perhaps she hoped to find there some idea about how to live her own life. She became not less but more interested in reading. For the last 20 years of her life, Jacqueline worked as a publisher’s editor, first at Viking, then at Doubleday, pursuing(追求)a late-life career longer than her two marriages combined. During her time in publishing, she was responsible for managing and editing more than 100 successfully marketed books. Among the first books were In the Russian Style and Inventive Paris Clothes. She also succeeded in persuading TV hosts Bill Moyer’s and Jose Campbell to transform their popular television conversations into a book, The Power of Myth. The book went on to become an international best-seller. She dealt, too, with Michael Jackson as he prepared his autobiography(自传), Moonwalk. Jacqueline may have been hired for name and for her social relations, but she soon proved her worth. Her choices, suggestions and widespread social relations were of benefit both to the publishing firms and to Jacqueline herself. In the books she selected for publication, she built on a lifetime of spending time by herself as a reader and left a record of the growth of her mind. Her books are the autobiography she never wrote. Her role as First Lady, in the end, was overshadowed by her performance as an editor. However, few knew that she had achieved so much. 小题1:We can learn from the passage that Jacqueline _________A.because fond of reading after working as an editor | B.was in charge of publishing 100 books | C.promoted her books through social relations | D.gained a lot from her career as an editor | 小题2:The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that_________A.Jacqueline ended up as an editor rather as First Lady | B.Jacqueline’s life as First Lady was more colorful than as an editor | C.Jacqueline was more successful as an editor than as First Lady | D.Jacqueline’s role as First Lady was more brilliant than as an editor | 小题3:What can be inferred from the passage?A.Jacqueline’s two marriages lasted more than 20 years | B.Jacqueline’s own publishing firm was set up eventually | C.Jacqueline’s views and beliefs were reflected in the books she edited | D.Jacqueline’s achievements were widely known. | 小题4:The passage is mainly______________A.an introduction of Jacqueline’s life both as First Lady and as an editor | B.a brief description of Jacqueline’s lifelong experiences | C.a brief account of Jacqueline’s career as an editor in her last 20 years | D.an analysis of Jacqueline’s social relations in publishing |

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And 1 otherwise assignen(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 2 to sit at the back of the classroom. All this 3 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. “I Went Skydiving at 84!” As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2011,when my husband arranged for me me ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time ,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社区)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream. In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it. One june 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reachen 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward fo zhout five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air ballon. I was just enjoying it. Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen. 小题1: What happened to the auther in 2001?A.She flew an airplane | B.She entered a competition | C.She went on a hot air balloon ride | D.She moved into a retirement community | 小题2: The author mentioned George Bush Sr. in her essay to .A.build up her own reputation | B.show her admiration for him | C.compare their health conditon | D.make her argument persuasive | 小题3: How did the authou feel immediately after she jumped out of the plane?A.Excited | B.Scared | C.Nervous | D.Regretful | 小题4: What did the author enjoy most when she was skydiving?A.The beautiful clouds | B.The wonderful view | C.The company of Jay | D.The one-minute free fall |

Violin prodigies (神童), I learned, have come in distinct waves from distinct regions. Most of the great performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were born and brought up in Russia and Eastern Europe. I asked Isaac Stern, one of the world’s greatest violinists the reason for this phenomenon. “It is very clear,” he told me. “They were all Jews and Jews at the time were severely oppressed and ill-treated in that part of the world. They were not allowed into the professional fields, but they were allowed to achieve excellence on a concert stage.” As a result, every Jewish parent’s dream was to have a child in the music school because it was a passport to the West. Another element in the emergence of prodigies, I found, is a society that values excellence in a certain field to nurture (培育) talent. Nowadays, the most nurturing societies seem to be in the Far East. “In Japan, a most competitive society, with stronger discipline than ours,” says Isaac Stern, children are ready to test their limits every day in many fields, including music. When Western music came to Japan after World War II, that music not only became part of their daily lives, but it became a discipline as well. The Koreans and Chinese as we know, are just as highly motivated as the Japanese. That’s a good thing, because even prodigies must work hard. Next to hard work, biological inheritance(遗传) plays an important role in the making of a prodigy. J. S. Bach, for example, was the top of several generations of musicians, and four of his sons had significant careers in music. 小题1: Jewish parents in Eastern Europe longed for their children to attend music school because ________.A.it would allow them access to a better life in the West | B.Jewish children are born with excellent musical talent | C.they wanted their children to enter into the professional field | D.it would enable the family to get better treatment in their own country | 小题2: Nurturing societies as mentioned in the passage refer to societies that ________.A.are highly motivated in the education of music | B.treasure talent and provide opportunities for its full development | C.encourage people to compete with each other | D.promise talented children high positions | 小题3: Which of the following contributes to the emergence of musical prodigies according to the passage?A.a natural gift. | B.extensive knowledge of music. | C.very early training. | D.a prejudice-free society. | 小题4: Which of the following titles best summarizes the main idea of the passage?A.Jewish Contribution to Music | B.Training of Musicians in the World | C.Music and Society | D.The Making of Music Prodigies |
