It is well known that Einstein was the father of the famous Theory of Relativity. But do you know it owes a great deal to Marits, Einstein’s former wife? In 1896, 17-year-old Einstein went to Zurich to study physics. There he met a girl from Hungary. They studied in the same class. The same interest brought the two together and the young man fell in love with Marits. In 1903, when Einstein was 24 years old, he married Marits, who was 4 years older than he. After their marriage, Einstein devoted himself to the research of the great theory. To give her husband more help, Marits gave up her own work, and became a good wife and assistant. She tried her best to encourage him whenever possible and she was sure that her husband would succeed. They often discussed the theory while walking outside or sitting together in the room. They even discussed it in their letters when one of them was away from home. In 1914, the Einstein moved to Berlin and settled there. At that time, Einstein’s theory proved to be correct and he had become famous all over the world. Marits was very proud of him and his success. But it was not long before the First World War broke out. Marits as well as her two sons, who were all on holidays in Switzerland, couldn’t come back to Berlin. The war not only stopped Einstein’s work but broke up the warm, happy family. In 1919, Einstein and Marits had to get divorced. Einstein himself, however, later said that Marits was really an outstanding woman. 小题1:From the first paragraph, we can infer that the passage is mostly about __________.A.Einstein’s former wife | B.Marits’s love for Einstein | C.Einstein’s famous theory | D.the life of Einstein and his former wife | 小题2:Einstein fell in love with Marits mainly because they ________.A.were in the same school | B.wanted to do research together | C.had the same interest | D.came from different countries | 小题3:By the year of 1914, Einstein had _________________.A.become famous all over the world | B.been proud of his success | C.suffered from the 1st World War | D.lost touch with Marits | 小题4:Einstein and Marits got divorced because ________________.A.they no longer loved each other | B.the 1st World War broke out | C.Marits went away with the children | D.Einstein had become famous |

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives(观点)by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in. With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people’s writing can one discover what works, what doesn’t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has. Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction. As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter — the volume(量)of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn’t necessarily be able to have in my lifetime. 小题1:What can be inferred about the author as a child?A.He never watched TV. | B.He read what he had to. | C.He found reading unbelievable. | D.He considered reading part of his life. | 小题2:The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means _________. A.the ability to speak | B.a way of writing | C.a sound quality | D.a world to write about | 小题3:What effect does reading have on the author?A.It opens up a wider world for him. | B.It helps him to realize his dream. | C.It makes his college life more interesting. | D.It increases his interest in worldwide travel. | 小题4:Which of the following can be the best title of this text?A.How do I read? | B.What do I read? | C.Why do I read? | D.When do I read? |

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always known that my brother was different. At first I thought this was a 31 thing. But when I got older I learned the truth. My brother had autism (孤独症) and Attention Deficit Disorder (儿童多动症) — serious 32 conditions. At 15, he 33 like a 7-year-old child. When he was little, I didn’t 34 it as much. But as he got older, it became more obvious. When something didn’t go his 35 , he got angry and it took hours to 36 him down. He would talk to himself and play with string. We could never 37 to give him his medicine, otherwise he’d go wild. I was always 38 when we took him anywhere, and I never wanted to bring any of my friends 39 with me. When I was 10, I felt like I couldn’t 40 it any more. I’d shout at him for being different and would ask 41 he couldn’t be normal. Of course, he had no 42 what I was talking about. It became very hard, 43 when a friend of mine didn’t want to come over 44 her mom had said my brother was dangerous. Our fights 45 up until one day he came up to me. He gave me a big 46 , like he was saying, “I don’t know what I did 47 , but I hope you still love me.” At that moment I realized that I’d better learn to 48 him. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned how 49 I really am. Having him as a brother has made me kinder and more patient. No matter how busy my 50 is, he’ll always listen to my problems. I worry about his future, but I know he’ll always be loved.

My bike was a three-speed English “racer”, purchased during my second year in college in November 1964 for $44. Most of the money was earned by myself in my spare time, but I had to get my mother to help me out a little. At that time, bikes were rare on a college campus. My reason for getting a bicycle was a little strange. A friend of mine convinced me to take a summer job selling door-to-door and suggested that I should use a bicycle to travel between houses. The job didn’t work out, but the idea was in my brain. That fall, I borrowed another student’s bike and rode 45 miles on the first day, but his bike soon had a flat(瘪了的轮胎) which he didn’t like fixing. So I had to buy one. I immediately started using mine almost every day. Before getting the bike, I sometimes walked 28 miles to my parents’ house. Now the bike gave me a quicker method, but my first trip took four hours due to strong headwinds that had me fight for every foot. Once I made a trip of 100 miles in one day. I decided to use the bike to go camping in the Smokies. During the trip, I recognized the need for handlebars and more gears, so I bought a ten-speed after just one year though I loved this bike. The first bike “hung around” for a couple of years, and then I gave it to my sister’s kids who let it become part of their lives. 小题1:What can we learn from the passage?A.His mother gave him some money when he bought the first bike. | B.The first bike was a gift from his mother. | C.He bought the first bike for racing. | D.He wanted to buy a bike because all his classmates had one. | 小题2:We can infer that besides studying at college the writer ____.A.often helped his friend do business | B.also worked in a factory | C.had part-time jobs in his spare time | D.had to make money to pay for his tuition | 小题3:The underlined phrase “the idea” in the first paragraph refers to “____”.A.selling door-to-door | B.buying a bike of his own | C.borrowing a bike from others | D.earning money by working | 小题4:According to the passage, we can learn that the first bike was ____ for him.A.unnecessary | B.very useful | C.a lifelong tool | D.too troublesome |
