His heart filled with a terrible fear, all Bertie could think of was his white lion. "But the lion," he cried, "What about the lion?"
"I"m afraid there"s something else I have to tell you," his father said. Looking across at Bertie"s mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus(马戏团) owner from France, who was over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.
"No! You can"t send him to a circus!" said Bertie. "People will come to see him. He"ll be shut up behind bars. I promised him he never would be. And they will laugh at him. He"d rather die. Any animal would! " But as he looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.
Bertie felt completely betrayed. He waited until he heard his father"s deep breathing next door. With his white lion at his heels, he crept downstairs in his pyjamas, took down his father"s rifle from the rack and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion"s neck. The time had come.
"Be wild now," he whispered. "You"ve got to be wild. Don"t ever come home. All my life I"ll think of you. I promise I will." He buried his head in the lion"s neck. Then, Bertie clambered down the hill and walked away.
When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned, stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.
There was only one thing left to do. With tears filling his eyes and his mouth, he lifted the rifle to his shoulder and fired over the lion"s head.

Fortunately he had a strong-willed (意志坚强的) caring mother. John remembered that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you want really to be if you just believe.”She told him not to depend on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success, ”she said. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”
These words came from a woman with less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15, to Chicago.
Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for. John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power of words—as an editor of the newspaper and yearbook at Du Sable High School His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.
While others discouraged him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by.“Nothing beats a failure but a try. ”She also let him pawn(典当)her furniture to get the $ 500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.
It is natural that difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind.“Son, failure is not in your vocabulary!”
Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America—worth $ 150 million.

A.didn’t believe in or depend on others |
B.thought one could be whatever one wanted to be |
C.believed one would succeed without working hard |
D.thought no one could succeed without working hard |
A.if you try, you would succeed |
B.a failure is difficult to beat, even if you try |
C.a try is always followed by a failure |
D.no failure can be beaten unless you try |
A.how John H. Johnson became successful |
B.about the mental (心理的) support John’s mother gave him |
C.about the importance of a good education |
D.about the key to success for blacks |
But at 38 , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I 39 our meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I 40 knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown(皱眉). She stepped away silently, with her little heart 41_ . I didn"t realize how harshly(苛刻地) I had spoken.
That night, when I lay 42 in bed, God"s quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While 43 with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite... Go look around on the kitchen floor, you"ll find some flowers there by the 44 . Those are the flowers she brought for you. She 45 them herself-- pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly, and you never saw the 46 in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears had begun to fall. I quietly went and knelt by her 47 : “Wake up, my dear,” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree. I 48 them in a napkin, just for you. I knew you"d like them, especially the 49 .” I said, “I am so sorry that I missed them today... And I 50 have fussed(慌乱)at you that way.”
And she whispered, “Mommy, that"s okay... I still love you 51 .” I hugged her and said, “I love you, too and I LOVE the flowers.”
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the 52 you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave _53 will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our 54 than into our families--an unwise investment indeed.
Remember that 55 =" (F)ATHER" -- (A)ND--(M)OTHER -- (I)--(L)OVE--(Y)OU.

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very kind farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night"s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, "How could this happen? Why did you not watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house," she accused. "The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help."
"Things aren"t always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the underground room , I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune, I asked God if I could seal the wall so he couldn"t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer"s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I asked God if the angel could take the cow instead. You see, things aren"t always what they seem. "

A.the older angel killed the farmer"s cow |
B.the older angel treated the two families differently |
C.the wealthy man gave them a bad place to live in |

A.Because God wanted the older angel to take the cow. |
B.Because she wanted to teach the younger angel a lesson. |
C.Because she wanted to save the farmer"s wife. |
D.Because she was sympathetic to the rich. |
A.angels are always ready to help the poor |
B.sometimes things are not what they seem |
