A former high school teacher who fled his classroom during the massive May 12 earthquake in southwest China has a new job here in a private training school.
Fan Meizhong has a two-year contract with Keyfind Education School in the Haidian District, school spokesman Zhang Wenbin told Xinhua on Wednesday.
The former Chinese language teacher from a private high school in earthquake-hit Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, was nicknamed “running Fan” by netizens (网民) after he left his students behind and escaped the classroom as the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck.
Fan’s behavior became a controversial object, and he was later fired.
Zhang said, however, that Fan had been hired for his extensive teaching experience and talent. At Keyfind, he’ll conduct research on developing students’ potential and raising their interest in learning. He’ll also give some lectures, according to Zhang.
“Fan, as a person, also needs to live,” Zhang said. “We hope the media will be tolerant about Fan and give him some living space. Whether he was wrong or right in his running behavior, we only want to make use of his talent.”
He said the school had not decided what to do next about Fan’s job.

The passage is mainly about the news that Fan Meizhong, once a teacher in Dujiangyan City who left his students behind and ran away during the earthquake, again got employed as a teacher in Beijing.
In my opinion, Fan"s behavior deserves scolding. According to our law"s morality, any grown-up should have the duty to protect teenagers. Therefore, as a teacher, Fan should have helped his helpless students during the earthquake instead of choosing to run away. Although we can understand that it is the instinct that makes Fan escape from the earthquake, he shouldn’t insist that he was a model to be followed. It’s really a shame.
As a result, I think he is not qualified as a teacher anyway, though we should be a little tolerant to give him a chance. If employed as a teacher, he shall set a bad pattern for others.
In my eyes, a teacher should not only be rich in knowledge but also have noble virtue.

There are two major teaching methods in schools: the lecture system and the discussion system.
The two teaching methods have their own strengths and weaknesses respectively.
Many students like the lecture system because it helps them to learn quickly and much more. Attending a well-prepared lecture is a most rewarding experience: it can open a new horizon for you and save you much time as well – the time you might otherwise spend reading one book after another. Yet the fault of the lecture system is that it cultivates a bad habit of passive learning. Students bring their notebooks and even tape recorders to class to write everything down without thinking for themselves, let alone raise any question to teachers.
On the contrary, the discussion system encourages students to form their own ideas and opinion. To engage in frequent and even heated debates, you have to do a lot of homework beforehand, find answers yourselves and thus you develop the analytical skills which benefit both your study habit and your future life. However, it also has its weakness: students do not learn systematically.
