阅读理解。     Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don"t worry because most are so weak that they cannot be
felt. Only a few big ones hurt people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, such as the big one is Sichuan last year. Thousands of people died
in it. So it"s important to know what to do when one hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safely in an
earthquake.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and anything that
could fall on you.
If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, signs, buildings and streetlights.
These could fall on you.
If you are in a shop and far from the door, don"t try to run to outside and rush for exits (出口). Everyone
will be doing that and you"ll find it hard getting out. Don"t get into a lift during an earthquake. Just hide under
some strong covers near you.
When an earthquake has ended, be careful because after-shocks may still happen. These are just as
dangerous as the earthquake itself. So stay under the desk until you make sure it"s safe to get up.
If you are at home and you smell gas, open the windows and get out of the building as quickly as you can.
A gas line in your house may be broken. This could be very dangerous. 1. Most earthquakes are too _____ to hurt people. A. strong

For most students, the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some students find the exam time
is so bad that they become ill, because they are afraid of failing, and they are afraid of letting their parents
and families down. If exams are really making you ill or worried, don"t hide your feelings. Talk to someone
about it. If he or she doesn"t help you, ask someone else.
Here are some top tips given by educational psychologists (教育心理学家):
     (1) Ask a teacher about how to revise and about exam skills- how to work when you are in an exam.
     (2) Take a short rest during your time of work and revision. If your mind is tired, it will not remember
well.
     (3) Revise at the time when you know you will work at your best.
     (4) Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.
     (5) If you feel bad, talk to someone about your worries. But don"t be too relaxed! Some stress over
exams makes you work hard for them.
     (6) If it upsets you to talk to your friends about an exam when it is finished, don"t do it! In fact, don"t
even think about the exam you have finished. What is done has been done. You cannot change what you
have written!
     (7) If you are studying in the evening, don"t go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind will still be "going
round and round"- thinking too much. So something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something
that will relax you, and make you think of other things.

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big. And
they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草).
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the
pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly
touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses
the fly until"it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.

Here are some accidents which often happen to children:
◆ Scald (烫伤)-Small children don"t understand that hot water and hot drinks can be dangerous. Adults
often forget the danger, too. It only takes a cup of tea or coffee, or a bath that"s too hot to scald a child badly.
◆Falls-Children of all ages fall and hurt themselves from time to time. For babies, the danger is rolling off
the edge of something, like beds, chairs or tables. For babies of two to four, climbing on furniture doesn"t
seem dangerous. It"s just fun. But it"s very easy for them to fall off a piece of furniture, down the stairs, out
of a window or off a balcony (阳台).
◆Burns-Many children die in house fires and more are badly burnt. A cigarette (香烟) can easily start a
fire. A child can also be burnt by a hot iron or matches.
◆Cuts-Class causes the most serious cuts. So do broken bottles, doors or windows.
